Abstract

A load control device for controlling the amount of power delivered to an electrical load is able to operate in a normal mode and a burst mode. The load control device may comprise a control circuit that activates an inverter circuit during active state periods and deactivates the inverter circuit during inactive state periods. The control circuit may operate in the normal mode to regulate an average magnitude of a load current conducted through the electrical load to be above a minimum rated current. The control circuit may operate in the burst mode to adjust the average magnitude of the load current to be below the minimum rated current. The control circuit may adjust the average magnitude of the load current by adjusting the length of the inactive state periods while holding the length of the active state periods constant.

Claims

1. A method for controlling a load current conducted through an electrical load, the method comprising:

when operating in a normal mode, regulating an average magnitude of the load current towards a target current by driving a switching device between different operating states; and

when operating in a burst mode, adjusting the average magnitude of the load current to the target current over a plurality of burst mode periods by driving the switching device between the different operating states during an active state period of each of the plurality of burst mode periods, stopping driving the switching device between the different operating states during an inactive state period of each of the plurality of burst mode periods, and adjusting a length of the inactive state period in at least a subset of the plurality of burst mode periods while holding a length of the active state period constant.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

when operating in the burst mode, adjusting the length of the active state period by an active state adjustment amount in at least one of the plurality of burst mode periods.

The method of claim 2, wherein adjusting the length of the inactive state period in at least a subset of the plurality of burst mode periods while holding the length of the active state period constant comprises adjusting the length of the inactive state period by an inactive state adjustment amount in each of the subset of the plurality of burst mode periods until a total amount of adjustment is equal to approximately a threshold amount, prior to adjusting the length of the active state period by the active state adjustment amount in the at least one of the plurality of burst mode periods.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the threshold amount is determined as a function of a present length of the active state period.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein the inactive state adjustment amount is smaller than the active state adjustment amount.

6. The method of claim 3, wherein both the length of the active state period and the length of the inactive state period are adjusted in the at least one of the plurality of burst mode periods.

The method of claim 3, wherein, when operating in the burst mode, driving the switching device between the different operating states comprises rendering the switching device conductive and non-conductive once in every operating cycle of a plurality of consecutive operating cycles, and the active state adjustment amount is equal to approximately a length of the every operating cycle.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

sensing a magnitude of the load current via a current sense circuit, wherein driving the switching device between the different operating states comprises rendering the switching device conductive and non-conductive in response to the sensed magnitude of the load current.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

determining whether the target current falls below a transition current;

operating in the normal mode if the target current is greater than the transition current; and

operating in the burst mode if the target current is less than the transition current.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the electrical load comprises an LED light source capable of emitting light at a target intensity, and wherein the method comprising:

determining whether the target intensity falls below a transition intensity;

operating in the normal mode if the target intensity is greater than the transition intensity; and

operating in the burst mode if the target intensity is less than the transition intensity.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein driving the switching device between the different operating states comprises rendering the switching device conductive and non-conductive once in every operating cycle of a plurality of consecutive operating cycles.

12. A load control device for controlling an amount of power delivered to an electrical load, the load control device comprising:

a load regulation circuit configured to control a magnitude of a load current conducted through the electrical load to control the amount of power delivered to the electrical load, the load regulation circuit comprising a switching device; and

a control circuit coupled to the load regulation circuit and configured to control the switching device to regulate an average magnitude of the load current, the control circuit configured to operate in a normal mode and a burst mode, the burst mode characterized by a plurality of burst mode periods;

wherein, during the normal mode, the control circuit is configured to drive the switching device between different operating states to regulate the average magnitude of the load current, and

wherein, during the burst mode, the control circuit is configured to drive the switching device between the different operating states during an active state period within each of the plurality of burst mode periods, and to stop driving the switching device between the different operating states during an inactive state period within each of the plurality of burst mode periods, the control circuit further configured to adjust the average magnitude of the load current by adjusting a length of the inactive state period while holding a length of the active state period constant in at least a subset of the plurality of burst mode periods.

The load control device of claim 12, wherein, during the burst mode, the control circuit is configured to adjust the length of the inactive state period by an inactive state adjustment amount in each of the subset of the plurality of burst mode periods while holding the length of the active state period constant, and to adjust the length of the active state period by an active state adjustment amount in a subsequent one of the plurality of burst mode periods.

The load control device of claim 13, wherein, during the burst mode, the control circuit is configured to adjust the length of the inactive state period in each of the subset of the plurality of burst mode periods until a total amount of adjustment is approximately equal to a threshold amount, before adjusting the length of the active state period by the active state adjustment amount in the subsequent one of the plurality of burst mode periods.

15. The load control device of claim 14, wherein the threshold amount is determined as a function of a present length of the active state period.

16. The load control device of claim 13, wherein the inactive state adjustment amount is smaller than the active state adjustment amount.

The load control device of claim 13, wherein, during the burst mode, the control circuit is configured to render the switching device conductive and non-conductive once in every operating cycle of a plurality of consecutive operating cycles during the active state period within each of the plurality of burst mode periods, and the active state adjustment amount is equal to approximately a length of the every operating cycle.

18. The load control device of claim 12, wherein, in the normal mode, the control circuit is configured to regulate the average magnitude of the load current towards a target current, and

wherein the control circuit is configured to operate in the normal mode when the target current is greater than a transition current, and operate in the burst mode when the target current is less than the transition current.

The load control device of claim 12, wherein the electrical load comprises an LED light source capable of emitting light at a target intensity, and the control circuit is configured to operate in the normal mode when the target intensity is greater than a transition intensity, and operate in the burst mode when the target intensity is less than the transition intensity.

20. The load control device of claim 12, further comprising:

a current sense circuit configured to provide a load current feedback signal that indicates the magnitude of the load current to the control circuit,

wherein the control circuit is configured to regulate the average magnitude of the load current in response to the load current feedback signal.

21. The load control device of claim 12, wherein the control circuit is configured to drive the switching device between the different operating states by rendering the switching device conductive and non-conductive once in every operating cycle of a plurality of consecutive operating cycles.

22. A load control device for controlling an amount of power delivered to an electrical load, the load control device comprising:

a load regulation circuit configured to control a magnitude of a load current conducted through the electrical load to control the amount of power delivered to the electrical load, the load regulation circuit comprising a switching device; and

a control circuit coupled to the load regulation circuit and configured to control the switching device to regulate an average magnitude of the load current, the control circuit configured to operate in a normal mode and a burst mode, the burst mode characterized by a plurality of burst mode periods;

wherein, during the normal mode, the control circuit is configured to drive the switching device between different operating states to regulate the average magnitude of the load current, and

wherein, during the burst mode, the control circuit is configured to drive the switching device between the different operating states during an active state period within each of the plurality of burst mode periods, and to stop driving the switching device between the different operating states during an inactive state period within each of the plurality of burst mode periods, the control circuit further configured to adjust the average magnitude of the load current by adjusting a length of the inactive state period in one or more of the plurality of burst mode periods while holding a length of the active state period constant, and adjusting both the length of the inactive state period and the length of the active state period in a subsequent one of the plurality of burst mode periods.
