Abstract

A device useful for implantation at a native heart valve can include an anchor element having a tubular configuration defining a longitudinal direction and a circumference, a heart valve prosthesis disposed within the anchor element, and a plurality of elongate members positioned at equidistant angular intervals about the circumference of the anchor element. The device can be configured to be transitioned from a radially collapsed delivery configuration to a radially expanded implantation configuration, and the plurality of elongate members can have a length extending in the longitudinal direction of the tubular member in the expanded implantation configuration.

Claims

1. A device useful for implantation at a native heart valve, the device comprising:

an anchor element having a tubular configuration defining a longitudinal direction and a circumference;

a heart valve prosthesis disposed within the anchor element; and

a plurality of elongate members positioned at equidistant angular intervals about the circumference of the anchor element,

wherein the device is configured to be transitioned from a radially collapsed delivery configuration to a radially expanded implantation configuration, and

wherein the plurality of elongate members have a length extending in the longitudinal direction of the tubular anchor element in the expanded implantation configuration.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the anchor element comprises a mesh structure.

3. The device of claim 1, wherein the anchor element is made of a shape memory material.

4. The device of claim 1, wherein the anchor element is made of nitinol.

5. The device of claim 1, wherein the device is configured to be transitioned from the radially collapsed configuration to a partially radially expanded configuration, the partially radially expanded configuration differing from the expanded implantation configuration.

6. The device of claim 5, wherein the device is configured to self-expand, upon removal of an external constraint force, from the radially collapsed delivery configuration to the partially radially expanded configuration.

7. The device of claim 1, further comprising an impermeable casing disposed adjacent to the anchor element,

wherein, in the radially expanded implantation configuration of the device, the impermeable casing is configured to be positioned to inhibit blood flow between the impermeable casing and heart tissue.

8. The device of claim 1, wherein the device is configured to be delivered endovascularly to the native heart valve.

9. The device of claim 8, wherein the device is configured to be delivered to the native heart valve via a catheter in a direction of retrograde blood flow.

10. The device of claim 1, wherein the plurality of elongate members is three elongate members.

11. The device of claim 1, wherein, in the radially expanded implantation configuration of the device, the anchor element is configured to press against tissue in the proximity of the native valve.

12. The device of claim 1, wherein the valve prosthesis comprises a semilunar valve prosthesis.

13. The device of claim 1, wherein the valve prosthesis comprises an aortic valve prosthesis.

14. The device of claim 1, wherein:

the anchor element comprises a lateral wall; and

the plurality of elongate members are attached to the lateral wall of the anchor element.

15. The device of claim 1, wherein, in the radially expanded implantation configuration of the device, the device is configured to press native valve leaflets of the native heart valve away from each other.

16. The device of claim 1, wherein, in the radially expanded implantation configuration of the device, the device is configured to lock in the implantation configuration and the valve prosthesis is configured to replace the native heart valve function.

17. The device of claim 1, wherein the device is configured to be transitioned to the radially expanded implantation configuration via a mechanism that exerts an external expansion force on the device.

18. The device of claim 17, wherein the mechanism comprises balloon inflation.

19. The device of claim 1, wherein the anchor element has an inflow end and an outflow end, and wherein the elongate members do not extend past the outflow end in a direction from the inflow end to the outflow end.

20. The device of claim 1, wherein the anchor element is radially expandable independently of the elongate members.

21. The device of claim 1, wherein the equidistant angular intervals are 120 degrees around the anchor element.

22. A device for implantation at a native heart valve, the device comprising:

an anchor element having a tubular configuration and defining a longitudinal direction and circumference;

a heart valve prosthesis disposed within the anchor element;

three elongate members attached to a lateral wall of the anchor element and positioned at equidistant angular intervals about the circumference of the anchor element;

an impermeable casing disposed adjacent to the anchor element;

wherein the device is configured to be in a radially collapsed delivery configuration for endovascular delivery to the native heart valve,

wherein the device is configured to be transitioned from the radially collapsed delivery configuration to a partially radially expanded configuration, and then to a radially expanded implantation configuration, the partially radially expanded configuration differing from the radially expanded implantation configuration,

wherein, in the radially expanded implantation configuration of the device;

the elongate members have a length extending in the longitudinal direction of the tubular anchor element, and

the impermeable casing is configured to be positioned to inhibit blood flow between the impermeable casing and heart tissue.

23. The device of claim 22, wherein the anchor element is made of nitinol.

24. The device of claim 22, wherein the anchor element is self-expandable.

25. The device of claim 22, wherein the valve prosthesis is an aortic valve prosthesis.
