1. A system for vending medication to a plurality of patients, the system comprising:

  • (a) an electronic medication administration record (e-MAR) that includes;

    (i) first unique patient identifying information for each of the plurality of patients, and(ii) dosing schedules for each of the plurality of patients;

    (b) a plurality of vending medication devices remotely located from the e-MAR, each vending medication device being associated with one of the patients, each vending medication device including;

    (i) a database that maintains the dosing schedule for the patient associated with the respective vending medication device, and(ii) a controller configured to obtain and configure the dosing schedule for the associated patient before the medication is loaded into the vending medication device by;

    (A) electronically communicating second unique patient identifying information to the e-MAR, wherein the dosing schedule for the patient is located and retrieved from the e-MAR using the first and second unique patient identifying information and is electronically communicated to the controller, and(B) electronically storing the dosing schedule received from the e-MAR in the database of the vending medication device,wherein the controller is further configured to;

    (C) enter a dose mode to allow for vending of medication after the medication is loaded into the vending medication device in accordance with the previously configured dosing schedule, and(D) prompt the patient regarding when to take the medication based on the previously configured dosing schedule without receiving any instructions to do so from any external source at the time when a dose of medication should be taken based on the previously configured dosing schedule,wherein the controller configures the dosing schedule without any interaction with identifier information associated with or on medication packages.
