Abstract

A swimming pool cleaner comprising a housing (1, 2), drive means (4, 41), a water inlet (11), a water outlet (12), a filter (20) and a pump (3), arranged so that, in a first operation mode of the swimming pool cleaner, the pump (3) displaces water from said inlet (11) to said outlet (12) through said filter (20), so that debris entering with the water is retained in a first part of said filter (20). The swimming pool cleaner is configured so that in a second operation mode, debris is displaced from said first part to a second part of the filter. Thus, a backwash effect is provided that prevents clogging.

Claims

1. A swimming pool cleaner for filtering debris from water in a swimming pool comprising:

a housing;

drive means for displacing the swimming pool cleaner;

a water inlet;

a water outlet;

a filter formed by a first filter chamber, a second filter chamber and at least one partition, the at least one partition separating the first and second chambers and respectively defining first and second filter enclosures,

at least one non-return device placed in correspondence with the partition wall; and

a pump;

wherein

said water inlet, water outlet, filter, at least one non-return device and pump are configured to (i) draw a first flow of water and debris from the swimming pool into the swimming pool cleaner such that the debris is retained in the first filter chamber of the filter and filtered water is discharged back into the swimming pool via the water outlet during a first operation mode of the swimming pool cleaner, and (ii) draw a second flow of water from the swimming pool into the swimming pool cleaner and direct the second flow of drawn water to displace the debris in the first filter chamber to the second filter chamber during a second operation mode of the swimming pool cleaner, the at least one non-return device being arranged such that the displaced debris cannot return from the second filter enclosure to the first filter enclosure when the swimming pool cleaner is operating in the first operation mode.

2. The swimming pool cleaner according to claim 1, arranged so that said pump operates differently in said first operation mode than in said second operation mode.

3. The swimming pool cleaner according to claim 2, arranged so that said pump drives water in a first direction in said first operation mode, and in a second direction substantially opposite to said first direction in said second operation mode.

4. The swimming pool cleaner according to claim 1, comprising an additional pump, the additional pump being arranged to operate in the second operation mode but not in the first operation mode.

5. The swimming pool cleaner according to claim 1, wherein the first filter chamber and the second filter chamber are arranged separated from each other, and the partition is formed by at least one conduit extending between the first and second filter enclosures.

6. The swimming pool cleaner according to claim 1, wherein said second filter chamber of the filter is arranged so that it can be separated from the first filter chamber of the filter.

7. The swimming pool cleaner according to claim 6, wherein said second filter chamber of the filter is arranged outside the housing.

The swimming pool cleaner according to claim 6, wherein said second filter chamber of the filter is arranged within the housing and arranged so that said second filter chamber of the filter can be removed through an opening in the housing without removing said first filter chamber of the filter from the housing.

9. The swimming pool cleaner according to claim 1, wherein the swimming pool cleaner is configured to switch from said first operation mode to said second operation mode in response to an accumulation of debris in said first filter chamber of the filter system.

The swimming pool cleaner according to claim 1, further comprising a dirt detector, the swimming pool cleaner being arranged to select, as a function of an output from said dirt detector, one of a plurality of available cleaning programs, and selectively operate according to the selected program.

The swimming pool cleaner according to claim 10, wherein at least one of said available cleaning programs is arranged for driving the swimming pool cleaner, via said drive means, with a first speed, and wherein at least another one of said available cleaning programs is arranged for driving the swimming pool cleaner, via said drive means, with a second speed, different from said first speed.

The swimming pool cleaner according to claim 10, wherein at least one of said available cleaning programs is arranged for driving the swimming pool cleaner in accordance with a first scanning pattern and wherein at least another one of said available cleaning programs is arranged for driving the swimming pool cleaner in accordance with a second scanning pattern, different from said first scanning pattern.

13. The swimming pool cleaner according to claim 1, wherein the swimming pool cleaner is configured to switch from said first operation mode to said second operation mode after having operated in said first operation mode for a predetermined amount of time.

14. The swimming pool cleaner according to claim 1, wherein the second filter chamber is configured to retain the displaced debris originating from the first filter chamber and prevent movement of the displaced debris back to the first filter chamber.
