Abstract

A patch-sized fluid delivery device may include a reusable portion and a disposable portion. The disposable portion may include components that come into contact with the fluid, while the reusable portion may include only components that do not come into contact with the fluid. Redundant systems, such as redundant controllers, power sources, motor actuators, and alarms, may be provided. Alternatively or additionally, certain components can be multi-functional, such a microphones and loudspeakers that may be used for both acoustic volume sensing and for other functions and a coil that may be used as both an inductive coupler for a battery recharger and an antenna for a wireless transceiver. Various types of network interfaces may be provided in order to allow for remote control and monitoring of the device.

Claims

1. A delivery device comprising:

a first housing portion having an outlet;

a second housing portion configured to selectively engage with and disengage from the first housing portion;

a reservoir located in the first housing portion, the reservoir having a first interior volume and a reservoir outlet connectable in fluid flow communication with the outlet in the first housing portion;

a volume varying mechanism supported for motion in a curved path to selectively vary the first interior volume of the reservoir, to selectively reduce the first interior volume and increase fluid pressure within the interior volume to drive fluid from the interior volume to the injection site; and

a shape-memory alloy supported by the second housing portion and operatively connectable to the volume varying mechanism when the first and second housing portions are engaged, the shape-memory alloy moving in a linear path of motion to selectively drive the volume varying mechanism in the curved path of motion.

2. A delivery device according to claim 1, wherein the volume varying mechanism comprises a rotary arm supported for rotation about a rotary axis within the reservoir and wherein the first interior volume is located on one side of the rotary arm.

3. A delivery device according to claim 2, further comprising a lever operatively coupled to the shape-memory alloy and the rotary arm, for conveying drive force from the shape-memory alloy to the rotary arm when the first and second housing portions are engaged.

4. A delivery device according to claim 3, wherein the lever is operatively coupled to the shape-memory alloy for rotation by the shape-memory alloy.

5. A delivery device comprising:

a first housing portion comprising;

a substrate having flexible membrane material thereon and incorporating therein a fluid channel, the fluid channel being part of a fluid path in the first housing portion from a reservoir port to a cannula port and including a series of regions exposed to the flexible membrane material, at least one of such regions being a valve region; and

a second housing portion configured to selectively engage with and disengage from the first housing portion, the second housing portion comprising;

a control assembly having an active mechanical assembly that interacts mechanically with the regions through the membrane material in such a manner as to achieve pumping of fluid along the fluid path, the active mechanical assembly including a valve actuator operating on the valve region;

a volume varying mechanism supported for motion in a curved path to selectively interact mechanically with the regions through the membrane material in such a manner as to achieve pumping of fluid along the fluid path; and

a shape-memory alloy operatively connectable to the volume varying mechanism when the first and second housing portions are engaged, the shape-memory alloy moving in a linear path of motion to selectively interact mechanically with the regions through the membrane material in the curved path of motion.

6. The device according to claim 5, wherein the series of regions are exposed to a single flexible membrane of the flexible membrane material.

7. The device according to claim 5, wherein the fluid path includes a fluid impedance downstream of the regions so as to prevent pumping of fluid along the path at an unsafe flow rate.

8. The device according to claim 7, wherein the fluid impedance is a passive fluid impedance.

9. The device according to claim 7, wherein the fluid impedance includes a tortuous conduit.

10. The device according to claim 9, wherein the conduit is an integral part of the fluid channel.

11. The device according to claim 9, wherein the conduit comprises coiled tubing.

12. The device according to claim 11, wherein the coiled tubing includes at least two turns.

13. The device according to claim 7, wherein the conduit has a serpentine shape.

14. The device according to claim 7, wherein the conduit has a length greater than 2 cm.

15. The device according to claim 7, wherein the conduit has a length greater than a largest dimension of the housing.

16. The device according to claim 7, wherein the conduit includes an effective internal diameter selected to provide a predetermined impedance based on at least one of a viscosity and a density of the fluid.

17. The device according to claim 7, wherein the conduit includes a length selected to provide a predetermined impedance based on at least one of a viscosity and a density of the fluid.

18. The device according to claim 7, wherein the internal diameter of the conduit is sufficiently large to prevent occlusion due to flow of a therapeutic liquid through the conduit.

19. The device according to claim 5, wherein the substrate includes a dispensing chamber formed in the fluid channel of the substrate, such chamber bounded by flexible membrane material forming a dispensing chamber membrane.
