Abstract

A method of synchronizing playback of audio data sent over a first wireless network from an audio source to a wireless speaker package that is adapted to play the audio data. The method includes comparing a first time period over which audio data was sent over the first wireless network to a second time period over which the audio data was received by the wireless speaker package, and playing the received audio data on the wireless speaker package over a third time period that is related to the comparison of the first and second time periods.

Claims

1. A method of synchronizing playback of audio data sent over a first wireless network from an audio source to a wireless speaker package that is adapted to play the audio data, the method comprising:

comparing a first time period over which audio data was sent over the first wireless network to a second time period over which the audio data was received by the wireless speaker package, where the comparison comprises a function of the first and second time periods, where the function comprises one of a ratio of the first and second time periods, or an adaptive learning algorithm; and

playing the received audio data on the wireless speaker package over a third time period that is related to the comparison of the first and second time periods.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the audio data is sent over the first wireless network as discrete audio data packets that are each sent over a discrete data packet time period, wherein the first time period comprises the discrete data packet time period.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the third time period is based on the discrete data packet time period and the function of the second time period and the first time period.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein the received audio data packets are played on the wireless speaker package over the third time period.

The method of claim 4 wherein the audio data packets have a packet time length, wherein the comparison comprises a ratio of the second time period to the first time period, and wherein the third time period comprises the packet time length times the ratio of the second time period to the first time period.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein the ratio of the second time period to the first time period is determined for each audio data packet and establishes a depth of a buffer used to buffer the received audio data packets, to dynamically modify the buffer depth.

7. The method of claim 4 further comprising modifying a buffer depth on the wireless speaker package when the difference between the third time period and the second time period changes.

The method of claim 1 wherein the audio data is sent over the first wireless network as discrete audio data packets, wherein the method further comprises time stamping audio data packets with a sent time stamp when they are sent over the first wireless network and also time stamping received audio data packets with a receive time stamp when they are received by the wireless speaker package, where the receive time stamp represents a local time on the wireless speaker package when the associated one of the individual data packets was received by the wireless speaker package.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein the first time period is based on the sent time stamp of audio data packets and the second time period is based on the receive time stamp of the same audio data packets.

The method of claim 1 wherein the audio data is sent by the audio source over the first wireless network as discrete audio data packets that are received by the wireless speaker package, wherein the method further comprises using the wireless speaker package to add to the packets a time offset that is based on the comparison of the first and second time periods.

The method of claim 10 further comprising sending the received audio data packets along with the time offset for the packets over a second wireless network from the wireless speaker package to one or more additional wireless speaker packages, to facilitate synchronized playback of the audio data packets on the wireless speaker package and the additional wireless speaker packages.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein the audio data is sent over the first wireless network as discrete audio data packets, wherein the method further comprises playing each of the received audio data packets on the wireless speaker package over the third time period.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein the third time period is variable, and wherein the method further comprises scaling the third time period based on a time between receipt of packets by the wireless speaker package.

14. The method of claim 1 further comprising applying a smoothing function to received audio data before it is played, to reduce audio artifacts due to differences between the first and third time periods.

15. The method of claim 1 further comprising storing in a memory of the wireless speaker package information from which the third time period can be derived.

The method of claim 15 wherein after the audio source and the wireless speaker package have been disconnected and then reconnected over the first wireless network, retrieving the stored information from memory and then using the information and the current values of the first and second time periods to generate the third time period over which received audio data is played on the wireless speaker package.

17. The method of claim 16 further comprising modifying the third time period after it has been retrieved, based on the first and second time periods.

18. The method of claim 1 wherein the first wireless network comprises a network that does not provide a means to synchronize or rate match the audio source and the wireless speaker package.

19. The method of claim 18 wherein the first wireless network is a Bluetooth network.

20. A wireless speaker package, comprising:

an electro-acoustic transducer;

a processor; and

memory comprising instructions which when executed by the processor cause the wireless speaker package to;

compare a first time period over which audio data was sent to the wireless speaker package over a first wireless network to a second time period over which the audio data was received by the wireless speaker package, where the comparison is a function of the first and second time periods, where the function is one of a ratio of the first and second time periods, or an adaptive learning algorithm; and

play the received audio data on the wireless speaker package over a third time period that is related to the comparison of the first and second time period.
