1. A method of implanting a meniscus prosthetic device, the method comprising:
- inserting the meniscus prosthetic device into a space between the femur and the tibia, wherein the meniscus prosthetic device comprises;
a central body portion comprising a flexible polymeric material, the central body portion having an upper articulating bearing surface and a lower articulating bearing surface; and
a perimeter completely surrounding the central body portion and having an increased thickness and an increased stiffness with respect to the central body portion, wherein the perimeter comprises a filament extending therethrough and providing the increased stiffness of the perimeter, wherein the filament is positioned superiorly relative to the upper articulating bearing surface; and
implanting the meniscus prosthetic device within the space without rigidly affixing the meniscus prosthetic device to the femur or the tibia such that the meniscus prosthetic device is translatable in the anterior-posterior direction and the medial-lateral direction, wherein the perimeter is configured to limit movement of the femoral condyle with respect to the upper articulating bearing surface of the central body portion, wherein the upper articulating bearing surface is in moving engagement with the femoral condyle and the lower articulating bearing surface is in moving engagement with the tibial plateau.

Abstract
A prosthetic device that may be utilized as an artificial meniscus is disclosed. The prosthetic device can restore shock absorption, stability, and function to the knee after the damaged natural meniscus is removed and replaced with the prosthetic device. In some embodiments, the meniscus includes an integral fixation anchor and additional features that minimize the requirement for modification of the implant for proper fit during surgery.
