1. A travel management system comprising:

  • a central memory storing member profile records, the central memory being addressable and accessible over a wireless communications network, each member profile record including central member identification information and travel information of an associated system member, the central member identification information including

         1) unique identifying information,

         2) a still and video image of the member,

         3) other biometric information of the member,

         4) an indication of the security threat the member poses and

         5) textual information including the name of the member;

    a central server in communication with the central memory;

    a portable access device associated with each member profile for which an security and background check has been performed, the portable access device including (i) a central processing unit, (ii) a communications device for communicating with the central server over the wireless communications network, (iii) a local memory in which is stored local member identification information and travel information duplicative of the associated member profile, and (iv) an access control device for receiving biometric information and preventing operation of said portable access device unless said received biometric information matches information of said local member identification information stored in said local memory; and

    an identification information input device and a communication device for communicating with the central server, wherein the identification information input device and communication device are associated with a security checkpoint for providing access to a travel facility at a terminal, the central server confirming the identity of a presenting member bearing a particular portable access device;

    wherein input member identification information derived in real time from the presenting member at the security checkpoint is received by the identification input device and a security check is conducted including verifying that

         1) an image displayed by the particular portable device matches the appearance of the presenting member,

         2) the particular portable access device is determined to be genuine by using the communication device to match unique identifying information of the presenting member from a profile record of the presenting member stored in central memory with unique identifying information of the presenting member from the local member identification information stored on the particular portable access device and

         3) a three-way match of member identification information is verified, said three-way match including;

    receiving the input member identification information by the identification information input device, conducting a comparison at said security checkpoint of the input member identification information with the local member identification informationstored in the local memory of the particular portable access device, upon a verification that the comparison of the input member identification information with the local member identification information stored in the local memory of the particular portable access device results in a match communicating the input member identification and the matching local member identification information to said central server, conducting comparisons at said central server of the input member identification information with the central member identification information included in the profile record of the presenting member stored in the central memory and of the matching local member identification information with the central member identification information included in the profile record of the presenting member stored in the central memory, and upon a verification that both the comparisons conducted at said central server result in matches communicating an indication of such verification that both the comparisons conducted at said central server result in matches to said security checkpoint without communication of any of the central member identification information;

    wherein the central server transmits a signal to the communication device based on verification of the three-way match of member identification information.
