1. A Multi-User Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MU-MIMO) wireless communication system comprising:

  • a Base Station (BS) with a plurality of antennas, either closely located or distributed;

    a plurality of Amplify and Forward Relays (AFRs) deployed over a coverage area, each AFR has NBF>

    1 BF antennas with a beam pattern facing a MU-BFer and NUF>

    1 UF antennas with a beam pattern facing user equipment (UEs) or downstream AFR(s);

    a channel estimation module for estimating the Total Channels between a plurality of UEs and the BS with the AFRs in place; and

    wherein the MU-BFer uses the estimates of the Total Channels to perform beamforming computations for transmitting and/or receiving multiple spatially multiplexed streams of signals to or from a plurality of UEs using the same frequency resource.
