Abstract

The exemplary embodiments herein provide an electronic display assembly having a liquid crystal display, a backlight placed behind the liquid crystal display, one or more power modules in electrical connection with the backlight, and a microprocessor in electrical connection with the power module(s). Said microprocessor is adapted to determine the sunset and sunrise times for each day and determine whether the present time is between sunrise and sunset or between sunset and sunrise. The microprocessor is further adapted to direct the power module(s) to drive the backlight at a daytime level if the present time is between sunrise and sunset, and direct the power module(s) to drive the backlight at a nighttime level if the present time is between sunset and sunrise.

Claims

1. An electronic display assembly comprising:

a liquid crystal display;

a backlight placed behind the liquid crystal display;

one or more power modules in electrical connection with the backlight; and

a microprocessor in electrical connection with the power module(s) and adapted to;

determine a geographical location for the liquid crystal display;

determine sunrise and sunset times for a day based on the geographical location;

determine a present time;

direct the power module(s) to drive the backlight at a daytime level if the present time is between sunrise and sunset; and

direct the power module(s) to drive the backlight at a nighttime level that is less than the daytime level if the present time is between sunset and sunrise;

wherein the microprocessor is adapted to maintain the backlight in an on state throughout an entire course of a day.

2. The electronic display assembly of claim 1 further comprising:

an ambient light sensor placed in electrical connection with the microprocessor.

3. The electronic display assembly of claim 2 wherein:

the microprocessor is further adapted to direct the power module(s) to drive the backlight based on data from the ambient light sensor.

4. The electronic display assembly of claim 3 wherein:

the microprocessor is further adapted to determine a possible failure in the ambient light sensor.

5. The electronic display assembly of claim 4 wherein the microprocessor is adapted to direct the power module(s) to drive the backlight based on data from the ambient light sensor if the present time is between sunrise and sunset, unless the microprocessor has determined a possible failure in the ambient light sensor.

6. The electronic display assembly of claim 3 wherein the microprocessor is adapted to direct the power module(s) to drive the backlight based on data from the ambient light sensor if the present time is between sunrise and sunset.

7. The electronic display assembly of claim 2 wherein:

the microprocessor is further adapted to determine a possible failure in the ambient light sensor and direct the power module(s) to drive the backlight at a nighttime or daytime level when a failure in the ambient light sensor is detected, and direct the power module(s) to drive the backlight based on data from the ambient light sensor when no failure is detected.

8. The electronic display assembly of claim 1 wherein:

the microprocessor is further adapted to;

determine whether the present time is during a sunset or sunrise transition period;

calculate artificial ambient sensor data (AAS) for sunset, if during a sunset transition period;

calculate artificial ambient sensor data (AAS) for sunrise, if during a sunrise transition period; and

direct the power module(s) to drive the backlight based on the AAS data if during the sunset transition period or the sunrise transition period;

wherein the AAS data, depending on time of day, takes into account;

data that approximates ambient light level for a display environment;

the sunrise transition period; and

the sunset transition period.

9. The electronic display assembly of claim 8 wherein:

the AAS data, depending on time of day, further takes into account a desired display brightness level during daytime; and

the microprocessor is further adapted to direct the power module(s) to drive the backlight based on the AAS data if the present time is between the sunrise transition period and the sunset transition period.

10. The electronic display assembly of claim 1 wherein:

the microprocessor is further adapted to;

determine whether the present time is during a sunset or sunrise transition period;

calculate artificial ambient sensor data (AAS) if during a sunset or sunrise transition period; and

direct the power module(s) to drive the backlight based on the AAS data if during the sunset transition period or the sunrise transition period;

wherein the AAS data, depending on time of day, takes into account;

data that approximates ambient light level for a display environment;

the sunrise transition period; and

the sunset transition period.

11. The electronic display assembly of claim 10 wherein:

the AAS data, depending on time of day, further takes into account a desired display brightness level during daytime; and

the microprocessor is further adapted to direct the power module(s) to drive the backlight based on the AAS data if the present time is between the sunrise transition period and the sunset transition period.

12. The electronic display assembly of claim 1 wherein:

the microprocessor is further adapted to;

determine local weather information;

calculate artificial ambient sensor data (AAS) based on the local weather information; and

direct the power module(s) to drive the backlight based on the AAS data;

wherein the AAS data, depending on time of day, further takes into account;

a desired display brightness level at nighttime;

a desired display brightness level during daytime;

data that approximates ambient light level for a display environment;

the sunrise transition period; and

the sunset transition period.

13. The electronic display assembly of claim 1 wherein the microprocessor is adapted to vary power to the backlight to adjust brightness of the liquid crystal display in response to a change in actual or estimated ambient light level.

14. The electronic display assembly of claim 13 wherein the microprocessor is adapted to vary power to the backlight to adjust brightness of the liquid crystal display in a non-linear fashion in response to changes in actual or estimated ambient light level.

15. The electronic display assembly of claim 1 wherein the microprocessor does not use data from an ambient light sensor to drive the backlight.

16. The electronic display assembly of claim 1 further comprising a backlight sensor positioned within a cavity for the backlight and configured to measure luminance generated by the backlight within the cavity;

wherein the backlight sensor is in communication with the microprocessor to provide feedback regarding backlight luminance to assist with control of power to the backlight.

17. The electronic display assembly of claim 1 further comprising a display luminance sensor configured to measure luminance generated by the liquid crystal display;

wherein the display luminance sensor is in communication with the microprocessor to provide feedback regarding display luminance to assist with control of power to the backlight.

18. The electronic display assembly of claim 1 further comprising at least one data interface adapted to permit a remote user to communicate with the electronic display assembly.

19. The electronic display assembly of claim 18 wherein the at least one data interface enables a remote user to adjust at least one of the following settings:

on/off, brightness level, enabling ambient light sensor, various alert settings, IP address, customer defined text/video, display matrix settings, display of image settings via OSD, and software functions.

20. The electronic display assembly of claim 1 further comprising at least one data interface adapted to transmit at least one of the following types of information:

power supply status, power supply test results, AC input current, temperature sensors, fan speed, video input status, firmware revision, and light level sensors.

21. An electronic display assembly comprising:

a liquid crystal display;

a backlight placed behind the liquid crystal display;

one or more power modules in electrical connection with the backlight; and

a microprocessor in electrical connection with the power module(s) and adapted to;

determine a geographical location for the liquid crystal display;

determine sunset and sunrise times for a day based on the geographical location of the liquid crystal display, including a sunset transition period and a sunrise transition period;

determine a present time;

determine if the present time is during the sunrise transition, daytime, the sunset transition, or nighttime;

calculate artificial ambient sensor data (AAS) for sunrise and direct the power module(s) to drive the backlight based on the AAS data if the present time is during the sunrise transition period;

direct the power module(s) to drive the backlight at a daytime level if the present time is daytime;

calculate artificial ambient sensor data (AAS) for sunset and direct the power module(s) to drive the backlight based on the AAS data if the present time is during the sunset transition period; and

direct the power module(s) to drive the backlight at a nighttime level that is less than the daytime level if the present time is nighttime;

wherein the microprocessor is adapted to maintain the backlight in an on state throughout an entire course of a day.

22. The electronic display assembly of claim 21 wherein:

the microprocessor is adapted to direct the power module(s) to drive the backlight based on the AAS data by calculating a desired display luminance based on ambient light sensor readings.

23. The electronic display assembly of claim 21 wherein:

the microprocessor is adapted to direct the power module(s) to drive the backlight based on the AAS data by using a table of desired display luminance values based on ambient light sensor readings.

24. The electronic display assembly of claim 21 wherein:

the microprocessor is adapted to direct the power module(s) to drive the backlight based on the AAS data by calculating a desired backlight luminance based on ambient light sensor readings.

25. The electronic display assembly of claim 21 wherein:

the microprocessor is adapted to direct the power module(s) to drive the backlight based on the AAS data by using a table of desired backlight luminance values based on ambient light sensor readings.

26. The electronic display assembly of claim 21 wherein:

the microprocessor is further adapted to determine local weather information;

wherein the AAS data is calculated based on the local weather information.

27. The electronic display assembly of claim 26 wherein:

the local weather information is determined by calculating a percentage of cloud cover.

28. An electronic display assembly comprising:

a liquid crystal display;

a backlight placed behind the liquid crystal display;

one or more power modules in electrical connection with the backlight;

a GPS device; and

a microprocessor in electrical connection with the power module(s) and the GPS device and adapted to;

determine location data for the liquid crystal display through the GPS device;

determine sunrise and sunset times for a day based on the location data;

determine a present time;

evaluate the present time in relation to the sunrise and sunset times; and

direct the power module(s) to drive the backlight based on the evaluation of the present time;

wherein the microprocessor is adapted to gradually ramp a brightness of the liquid crystal display during a transition between daytime and nighttime;

wherein the microprocessor is adapted to maintain the backlight in an on state throughout an entire course of a day.

29. The electronic display assembly of claim 28 wherein:

the microprocessor does not use data from an ambient light sensor to drive the backlight.

30. The electronic display assembly of claim 28 wherein:

the microprocessor is adapted to determine the sunrise and sunset times based on longitude and latitude coordinates of the electronic display.

31. The electronic display assembly of claim 28 wherein:

the microprocessor is adapted to determine the sunrise and sunset times by calculating a sunrise equation.
