1. A method in a user equipment, the method comprising:

  • communicating with a base station on a carrier;

    receiving an uplink grant from the base station for physical uplink shared channel transmission, where the uplink grant includes a field indicating at least whether an initial discrete Fourier transform spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing symbol is reserved for a sounding reference signal in a subframe;

    performing listen before talk to determine whether the subframe is available for uplink transmission in response to receiving the uplink grant;

    transmitting a sounding reference signal in the initial discrete Fourier transform spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing symbol of the subframe if listen before talk indicates that the subframe is available and the uplink grant field indicates that the symbol is reserved for a sounding reference signal in the subframe; and

    transmitting physical uplink shared channel in at least a portion of a remaining part of the subframe, where the remaining part of the subframe occurs later than the initial discrete Fourier transform spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing symbol.
