1. A method for operating a random access channel (RACH) by a base station (BS) in a communication system, the method comprising:

  • dividing user equipments (UEs) located at a coverage of the BS into a first RACH group and a second RACH group based on a predetermined threshold compared to respective communication quality levels between the UEs of each RACH group and the BS;

    broadcasting RACH configuration information including information of a first receive (Rx) beam sweep period and information of a second Rx beam sweep period;

    performing first Rx beamforming for receiving a first RACH signal from at least one UE included in the first RACH group using a first Rx chain within the first Rx beam sweep period; and

    performing second Rx beamforming for receiving a second RACH signal from at least one UE included in the second RACH group using a second Rx chain within the second Rx beam sweep period,wherein the first Rx beam sweep period is repeated a predetermined number of times within the second Rx beam sweep period, andwherein the first Rx beamforming is configured to be performed by the base station for a set of beam directions within the first Rx beam sweep period, and the second Rx beamforming is configured to be performed by the base station for the set of beam directions within the second Rx beam sweep period.
