Abstract

Systems and methods are disclosed for determining a context-dependent virtual distance based on stigmergic interference. The method may include obtaining environmental status information relating to an environment in proximity to a client device, calculating, based on the obtained environmental status information, the context-dependent virtual distance between the client device and a user of the client device, and controlling a user signaling pattern of the client device based on the calculated context-dependent virtual distance.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

obtaining environmental status information relating to an environment that includes a client device;

estimating a physical proximity value corresponding to a physical distance between the client device and a user of the client device;

determining a virtual distance value that is different from the physical proximity value, wherein the determining comprises increasing or decreasing the physical proximity value based on the obtained environmental status information to arrive at the virtual distance value; and

controlling a user signaling pattern of the client device based on the virtual distance value.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein:

estimating the physical proximity value comprises estimating a first physical proximity between a first user and a first client device, and the method further comprises estimating a second physical proximity value between a second user and a second client device within the environment, wherein the first physical proximity value and the second physical proximity value are substantially equal; and

the determining of the virtual distance value comprises calculating a first virtual distance value based on both the obtained environmental status information and the estimated first physical proximity value, and the method further comprises calculating a second virtual distance value based on both the obtained environmental status information and the estimated second physical proximity value, wherein the first virtual distance value and the second virtual distance value are substantially different.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the determining of the virtual distance value further comprises increasing or decreasing the physical proximity value based on a client device type of the client device.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the determining of the virtual distance value further comprises increasing or decreasing the physical proximity value based on a contextual device type of the one or more contextual devices.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

predicting, based on the virtual distance value, an answer reaction time of the user in response to the user signaling pattern,

wherein controlling the user signaling pattern comprises controlling the user signaling pattern based on the predicted answer reaction time.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein:

wherein the virtual distance value is increased based on an expectation that it will be difficult for the user to access the client device, and

wherein the predicted answer reaction time is increased based on the increase of the virtual distance value.

7. The method of claim 5, wherein:

wherein the virtual distance value is increased based on an expectation that the user will travel indirectly to the client device to answer a given communication with a given communication type, and

wherein the predicted answer reaction time is increased based on the increase of the virtual distance value.

8. The method of claim 5, wherein:

wherein the virtual distance value with respect to an interactive video and/or audio interactions is increased relative to the virtual distance value with respect to non-interactive video, audio, and/or textual interactions,

wherein the predicted answer reaction time with respect to the interactive video and/or audio interactions is increased relative to the predicted answer reaction time with respect to the non-interactive video, audio, and/or textual interactions.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the method is performed in the client device, in another client device, or in a remote device.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the environment is an Internet of Things (IoT) environment.

11. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

tracking at least one of (i) interactions between the user and the client device, (ii) changes in the environmental status information, (iii) changes in the physical proximity value corresponding to the physical distance between the user and the client device, or (iv) a combination thereof;

wherein the determining of the virtual distance value further comprises determining the virtual distance value based on the at least one of (i) the interactions between the user and the client device, (ii) changes in the environmental status information, (iii) changes in the physical proximity value corresponding to the physical distance between the user and the client device, or (iv) the combination thereof.

12. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

adjusting a power usage pattern based on the virtual distance value.

13. A hub device, the hub device comprising:

a transceiver configured to obtain environmental status information relating to an environment that includes a client device, wherein the environmental status information is obtained from one or more contextual devices associated with the environment in proximity to the client device;

a processor configured to;

estimate a physical proximity value corresponding to a physical distance between the client device and a user of the client device;

determine a virtual distance value that is different from the physical proximity value, wherein the determining comprises by increasing or decreasing the physical proximity value based on the obtained environmental status information to arrive at the virtual distance value; and

control a user signaling pattern of the client device based on the virtual distance value; and

a memory coupled to the processor and configured to store related data and instructions.

14. The hub device of claim 13, wherein the processor is configured to:

estimate a first physical proximity value between a first user and a first client device and a second physical proximity value between a second user and a second client device within the environment, wherein the first physical proximity value and the second physical proximity value are substantially equal; and

determine a first virtual distance value based on both the obtained environmental status information and the first physical proximity value and a second virtual distance value based on both the obtained environmental status information and the second physical proximity value, wherein the first virtual distance value and the second virtual distance value are substantially different.

15. The hub device of claim 13, the processor is further configured to determine the virtual distance value by increasing or decreasing the physical proximity value based on a client device type of the client device.

16. The hub device of claim 13, wherein the processor is further configured to determine the virtual distance value by increasing or decreasing the physical proximity value based on a contextual device type of the one or more contextual devices.

17. The hub device of claim 13, wherein:

the processor is further configured to predict, based on the virtual distance value, an answer reaction time of the user in response to a first user signaling pattern of the client device,

the processor is further configured to control the user signaling pattern based on the predicted answer reaction time.

18. The hub device of claim 17, wherein:

the processor is configured to increase the virtual distance value based on an expectation that it will be difficult for the user to access the client device; and

the processor is configured to increase the predicted answer reaction time based on the increase of the virtual distance value.

19. The hub device of claim 17, wherein:

the processor is configured to increase the virtual distance value based on an expectation that the user will travel indirectly to the client device to answer a given communication with a given communication type; and

the processor is configured to increase the predicted answer reaction time based on the increase of the virtual distance value.

20. The hub device of claim 17, wherein:

the processor is configured to increase the virtual distance value associated with an interactive video and/or audio interactions relative to non-interactive video, audio, and/or textual interactions; and

the processor is configured to increase the predicted answer reaction time with respect to the interactive video and/or audio interactions relative to the non-interactive video, audio, and/or textual interactions.

21. The hub device of claim 13, wherein the hub device is at least one of the client device, another client device in the environment, a remote device that is outside of the environment, or a combination thereof.

22. The hub device of claim 13, wherein the environment is an Internet of Things (IoT) environment.

23. The hub device of claim 13, wherein:

the processor is configured to track at least one of (i) interactions between the user and the client device, (ii) changes in the environmental status information, (iii) changes in an estimated physical proximity between the user and the client device, or (iv) a combination thereof; and

the processor is configured to determine the virtual distance value based on the at least one of (i) the interactions between the user and the client device, (ii) changes in the environmental status information, (iii) changes in the estimated physical proximity between the user and the client device, or (iv) a combination thereof.

24. The hub device of claim 13, wherein the processor is further configured to adjust a power usage pattern based on the virtual distance value.

25. An apparatus, the apparatus comprising:

means for obtaining environmental status information relating to an environment that includes a client device;

means for estimating a physical proximity value corresponding to a physical distance between the client device and a user of the client device;

means for determining a virtual distance value that is different from the physical proximity value, wherein the determining comprises increasing or decreasing the physical proximity value based on the obtained environmental status information to arrive at the virtual distance value;

means for controlling a user signaling pattern of the client device based on the virtual distance value; and

means for storing data and instructions.

26. A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising code, which, when executed by a processor, causes the processor to perform operations for determining a context-dependent virtual distance, the non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising:

code for obtaining environmental status information relating to an environment that includes a client device;

code for estimating a physical proximity value corresponding to a physical distance between the client device and a user of the client device;

code for determining a virtual distance value that is different from the physical proximity value, wherein the determining comprises increasing or decreasing the physical proximity value based on the obtained environmental status information to arrive at the virtual distance value; and

code for controlling a user signaling pattern of the client device based on the virtual distance value.
