Measuring environmental conditions over a defined time period within a wireless sensor system
First Claim
1. A method of measuring carbon monoxide using a wireless sensor device in a wireless sensor system, comprising:
- measuring signal strength of wireless signals received by the wireless sensor device from a base unit and from one or more wireless repeater units;
transmitting the measured signal strengths from the wireless sensor device to another device in the wireless sensor system;
continuously operating the wireless sensor device in a sleep mode whereby consumption of power is lower than when the wireless sensor device operates in an awake mode, and while in the sleep mode;
measuring the carbon monoxide level by periodically reading sensor data over a period of time from a carbon monoxide sensor included in the wireless sensor device, anddetermining, by the wireless sensor device, whether a value of the measured carbon monoxide level exceeds a threshold value over the period of time;
based on said determining that the measured carbon monoxide level exceeds the threshold value over the period of time, switching the operation of the wireless sensor device from the sleep mode to the awake mode; and
while in the awake mode, transmitting by the wireless sensor device the information indicative of the measured carbon monoxide level over a route as one or more packets, each packet comprising a checksum and an authenticity code for use in verifying an authenticity of the packet, the route being based on the transmitted signal strengths and additional signal strengths measured by the one or more wireless repeater units for wireless signals received from the base unit and from the wireless sensor device.

Abstract
An arrangement for measuring environmental conditions in a wireless sensor system. A threshold value may be determined. An environmental condition sensor unit may measure, over a defined period of time, an environmental condition level. The measured environmental condition level may be compared to the determined threshold value. It may be determined whether the measured environmental condition level exceeds the defined threshold value for the defined period of time. At least in part based on the determination of whether the measured environmental condition level exceeds the defined threshold value over the defined period of time, information indicative of the measured environmental condition level may be transmitted.
