1. A method, comprising:

  • in a plurality of visible light-emitting lighting devices installed within a physical environment visited by customers, each of the lighting devices comprising a substrate carrying at least one LED-based lighting fixture coupled to a processor and at least one sensor configured to detect and track customer movements, collecting, by the at least one sensor, data indicative of trajectories in a plurality of directions of a plurality of customers within the physical environment, said data obtained from a control signal carried by visible light;

    transmitting, by the processor, to a computing system linked to the lighting devices over one or more networks, the collected data comprising;

    analyzing, by the computing system, the collected data;

    identifying, by the computing system based on the analyzing, traffic patterns of at least some of the plurality of customers within the physical environment, wherein the traffic patterns comprise a plurality of directions within the physical environment, wherein the traffic patterns comprise preferred navigation patterns of customers within the physical environment based on movement detection and movement tracking by the at least one sensor of at least some of the plurality of customers through the physical environment;

    rendering, by the computing system on one or more displays, a graphical user interface that displays at least one plan view of the physical environment, wherein the at least one plan view comprises a graphical representation of the physical environment;

    rendering, by the computing system as part of the graphical user interface, information on the traffic patterns within the physical environment on the at least one plan view; and

    causing, by the computing system, at least the lighting device to be operated to emit visible light in order to present information based at least in part on the received data, the visible light being generated on at least one of at least one ceiling, at least one wall and/or at least one floor of the physical environment.
