Digital jukebox device with improved karaoke-related user interfaces, and associated methods
First Claim
1. A jukebox device, comprising:
- processing resources, including at least one processor and a memory;
a touch screen display device;
a payment acceptor; and
a storage device comprising instances of media available for playback via the jukebox device;
wherein the processing resources, the touch screen display device, and the payment acceptor cooperate with one another to cause the jukebox device to function in first, second and third different modes, wherein the first mode is a normal jukebox operation mode that is configured to enable a first partial subset of the instances of media to be played back on a pay-per-play basis while tracking the played instances in accordance with a first license scheme for mechanical reproduction and performance of instances of media, and wherein the second mode is a karaoke jukebox operation mode that is configured to enable a second partial subset of the instances of media to be played back on a pay-per-play basis while tracking the played instances in accordance with a second license scheme different from that first license scheme, the second license scheme providing authorization for recurring usage of a music track of a played instance and for recording a song using the music track, the first and second partial subsets being different from one another, and wherein a third mode provides for playback of instances of media from social networks without storing entire instances on the storage device or on an intermediate server, the playback in the third mode being in accordance with a third license scheme different from the first license scheme and the second license scheme, and wherein, as a part of the second mode, the touch screen display device presents a first set of screens that each list at least a portion of the instances of media in the second partial subset of the instances of media in a manner that resembles a book having multiple pages, each said page including at most a predefined maximum number of entries corresponding to the portion of the second partial subset of instances of media, and each said entry indicating a song name and an artist associated with the corresponding instance of media that is selectable for playback via the jukebox device, wherein the first set of screens each include a common set of control elements for re-organizing and navigating through the book, and wherein an interface unifies local content and central server content available for playback in the first mode and the second mode and content available only from social networking sites for playback in the third mode.

Abstract
Certain exemplary embodiments relate to entertainment systems and, more particularly, certain exemplary embodiments relate to jukebox systems that incorporate digital downloading jukebox features along with karaoke jukebox and/or photobooth features. A combined karaoke/photobooth/jukebox may enable more integrated performance-like experiences in an in-home or out-of-home location or venue. By leveraging vast audio media libraries, trusted rights-respecting network infrastructure, and on-site image/video capturing from integrated recorders and/or remote portable devices, a more sociable experience may be created for karaoke jukebox patrons, e.g., where custom content can be generated and shared in a safe and legally appropriate manner.
