Abstract

Apparatus and methods related to an underbody support for supporting a body of a being, such as during surgery to prevent contact pressure injuries. In certain embodiments, the underbody support may include one or more inflatable chambers enclosing a volume. At least one of the inflatable chambers may include one or more compression sensitive switches for monitoring the volume of the inflatable chamber, and the one or more compression sensitive switches may be located within the inflatable chamber. In some embodiments the one or more compression sensitive switches are sized to close when the said inflatable chamber is deflated to a desired residual volume.

Claims

1. An underbody support for a patient, the support comprising:

one or more inflatable chambers enclosing a volume;

at least one of the inflatable chambers includes one or more compression sensitive switches for monitoring the volume of the inflatable chamber, the one or more compression sensitive switches located within the inflatable chamber;

wherein

the one or more compression sensitive switches are sized to close when the inflatable chamber is deflated to a desired residual volume,

wherein at least one of the one or more compression sensitive switches comprise two layers of flexible, electrically conductive material separated by a compressible switch layer made of compressible material, and

the compressible switch layer includes a plurality of holes within which the two layers of electrically conductive material contact each other when at least one of the compression sensitive switches is sufficiently compressed.

2. The underbody support of claim 1, wherein the one or more inflatable chambers are substantially tubular and are positioned side-by-side one another and extend along an inflatable chamber longitudinal axis that is oriented transverse to a longitudinal axis of the patient.

3. The underbody support of claim 2, wherein the one or more inflatable chambers can each be inflated and deflated independently while the support is in use.

4. The underbody support of claim 2, wherein the one or more inflatable chambers can all be inflated and deflated simultaneously while the support is in use.

5. The underbody support of claim 2, wherein the one or more inflatable chambers can be inflated and deflated in two or more groups while the support is in use.

6. The underbody support of claim 1, wherein closure of the at least one compression sensitive switch initiates a control algorithm that activates a valve and a pump to adjust the volume of the inflatable chambers.

The underbody support of claim 1, wherein the at least one of the compression sensitive switches is coupled to a base layer of the underbody support distal from a patient support surface of the underbody support, at least one of the compression sensitive switches further comprising one or more compressible foam layers attached to the side of the electrically conductive material that is opposite the compressible switch layer;

wherein a combined thickness of the one or more compressible foam layers and the compressible switch layer determines a distance between the patient and the base layer when the at least one switch closes;

wherein the said distance between the patient and the base layer correlates with the volume of the inflatable chamber.

8. The underbody support of claim 1, wherein the electrically conductive material is preferably a conductive fabric, film or foil.

9. The underbody support of claim 1, wherein the electrically conductive material is substantially radiolucent.

10. The underbody support of claim 1, wherein the inflatable chamber has a diameter and a length extending along a longitudinal axis, and the electrically conductive material is preferably sized to cover a compression sensitive switch area of at least ½

the diameter and ½

the length of the inflatable chamber.

The underbody support of claim 1, wherein a control algorithm is configured to release air from the one or more inflatable chambers until a portion of the patient laying on the underbody support compresses and closes at least one of the one or more compression sensitive switches, wherein compression and closure of one or more of the compression sensitive switches initiates the control algorithm that activates a pump and a valve to re-inflate the inflatable chambers until the patient is lifted off of the one or more compressed, compression sensitive switches and the one or more compression sensitive switches reopens;

and

further wherein the reopening of the said one or more compressed, compression sensitive switches initiates the control algorithm that turns the pump and the valve off so that the volume of the inflatable chamber is maintained in a controlled but partially deflated condition.

The underbody support of claim 11, wherein the reopening of the one or more compressed, compression sensitive switches allows the switches in an open position to become a safety sensor for detecting inadvertent bottoming out of the patient against a base layer of the underbody support, the base layer located opposite a patient support surface of the underbody support;

wherein an air leak or repositioning of the patient that results in an inadvertent decrease in the volume and closing of at least one of the one or more compression sensitive switches, can be detected.

The underbody support of claim 12, wherein inadvertent closing of one or more of the compression sensitive switches initiates the control algorithm which activates the pump to re-inflate the inflatable chambers until the patient is lifted off of the one or more compressed, compression sensitive switches allowing that switch to reopen and activate a compression sensitive switch alarm.

14. The underbody support of claim 1, wherein a layer of compressible material is positioned over at least a portion of an upper surface of the one or more inflatable chambers.

15. The underbody support of claim 14, wherein the layer of compressible material is a polymeric foam.

16. The underbody support of claim 15, further comprising:

a flexible grounding electrode comprising a sheet of conductive or semi-conductive material having a top surface opposite a bottom surface, the flexible grounding electrode is approximately the same size as at least one of the one or more layers of compressible material, wherein the flexible grounding electrode is positioned and secured co-planer to at least one of the one or more layers of compressible material across the top surface or the bottom surface; and

a return electrode wire electrically connected to the flexible grounding electrode and adapted to connect to an electrosurgical generator.

17. The underbody support of claim 14, wherein a heating element is positioned over at least a portion of the upper surface of the layer of compressible material.

18. The underbody support of claim 17, wherein the heating element is comprised of an electrically conductive fabric or film.

The underbody support of claim 14, wherein at least one of the one or more layers of compressible material is bonded about its perimeter to two flexible side walls and two flexible end walls that are also made of polymeric foam, and the two flexible side walls and two flexible end walls are fastened to the perimeter of a base layer forming a box-like structure made of flexible foam, wherein the box-like structure surrounds and contains the one or more inflatable chambers.

The underbody support of claim 19, wherein upper edges of the two flexible side walls can hinge inward in response to the weight of the patient depressing a central region of at least one of the one or more layers of compressible material, wherein the hinging inward of the flexible side walls allows the layer of compressible material to deform maximally while accommodating the patient without creating a hammock effect.

21. The underbody support of claim 19, wherein the upper edges of the two flexible side walls can hinge inward in response to the weight of a patient depressing the central region of the layer of compressible material;

wherein the hinging inward of the flexible side walls allows the tops of the flexible side walls to substantially abut the sides of the patient stabilizing the patient against inadvertent lateral movement.

22. The underbody support of claim 19, wherein the heating element is a flexible grounding electrode comprising a sheet of conductive or semi-conductive material having a top surface opposite a bottom surface;

and

a return electrode wire is electrically connected to the flexible grounding electrode and is adapted to connect to an electrosurgical generator.

23. The underbody support of claim 1, further comprising a layer of fabric that has been coated on one or both sides with a sticky material comprising a raised pattern or raised dots;

wherein the layer of fabric is positioned between an upper surface of the underbody support and the patient to prevent the patient from inadvertently slipping off of the underbody support.

24. The underbody support of claim 23, wherein the layer of fabric comprises a draw sheet that is positioned over the underbody support for lifting the patient.

25. The underbody support of claim 23, wherein the sticky material comprises PVC or silicone.

26. The underbody support of claim 23, wherein the layer of fabric is a top layer of the underbody support.

27. An underbody support for supporting a body of a being, the underbody support comprising:

an inflatable chamber enclosing a volume;

a processor having a control algorithm configured to determine an inflation characteristic of the inflatable chamber;

a switch disposed inside the inflatable chamber, the switch being in electrical communication with the processor, and the processor configured to determine the inflation characteristic of the inflatable chamber based on information from the switch,

wherein at least one of the one or more switches is a compression sensitive switch comprising two layers of flexible, electrically conductive material separated by a switch layer made of compressible material, and

the switch layer includes a plurality of holes within which the two layers of electrically conductive material contact each other when at least one of the switches is sufficiently compressed.

28. The underbody support of claim 27, wherein the inflatable chamber comprises a plurality of inflatable chambers and/or the switch comprises a plurality of switches.

29. The underbody support of claim 27, wherein the switch is configured to close when the inflatable chamber is deflated to a desired residual volume.

30. An underbody support for supporting a body of a being, the underbody support comprising:

an inflatable chamber enclosing a volume;

a processor having a control algorithm configured to determine an inflation characteristic of the inflatable chamber;

a switch disposed inside the inflatable chamber, the switch being in electrical communication with the processor, and the processor configured to determine the inflation characteristic of the inflatable chamber based on information from the switch,

wherein a control algorithm is configured to release air from the one or more inflatable chambers until a portion of the patient laying on the underbody support compresses and closes at least one of the one or more switches,

wherein compression and closure of one or more of the switches initiates the control algorithm that activates a pump and a valve to re-inflate the inflatable chambers until the patient is lifted off of the one or more compressed switches and the one or more switches reopens, and

wherein the reopening of the said one or more compressed switches initiates the control algorithm that turns the pump and the valve off so that the volume of the inflatable chamber is maintained in a controlled but partially deflated condition.

31. An underbody support for a patient, the support comprising:

one or more inflatable chambers enclosing a volume;

at least one of the inflatable chambers includes one or more compression sensitive switches for monitoring the volume of the inflatable chamber,

the one or more compression sensitive switches located within the inflatable chamber, the one or more compression sensitive switches are sized to close when the inflatable chamber is deflated to a desired residual volume,

a layer of compressible material is positioned over at least a portion of an upper surface of the one or more inflatable chambers, the layer of compressible material is a polymeric foam;

a flexible grounding electrode comprising a sheet of conductive or semi-conductive material having a top surface opposite a bottom surface, the flexible grounding electrode is approximately the same size as at least one of the one or more layers of compressible material,

the flexible grounding electrode is positioned and secured co-planar to at least one of the one or more layers of compressible material across the top surface or the bottom surface; and

a return electrode wire electrically connected to the flexible grounding electrode and adapted to connect to an electrosurgical generator.

32. A method of providing underbody support to support a body of a being, the method comprising:

providing an underbody support comprising;

an inflatable chamber enclosing a volume,

an openable and closeable switch disposed within the inflatable chamber,

a processor having a control algorithm, the processor being in electrical communication with the switch,

a pump for inflating the inflatable chamber, the pump being in electrical communication with the processor, and

a valve for deflating the inflatable chamber, the valve being in electrical communication with the processor;

placing the body on the underbody support;

inflating or deflating the inflatable chamber with the pump or the valve to a partially inflated position until the switch switches from closed to open; and

maintaining the volume of the inflatable chamber at the partially inflated position,

wherein the partially inflated position occurs when a surface area contact between the underbody support and the supported body is within 20% of the maximum possible surface area contact.

33. The method of claim 32, wherein inflating or deflating the inflatable chamber with the pump or the valve to the partially inflated position until the switch switches from closed to open comprises:

inflating the inflatable chamber with the pump;

deflating the inflatable chamber until the inflatable chamber is deflated to a point where the geometry of the inflatable chamber causes the switch to close;

re-inflating the inflatable chamber until the switch is re-opened at the partially inflated position;

maintaining the volume of the inflatable chamber at the partially inflated position.

The method of claim 32, wherein the switch is a compression sensitive switch comprised of two layers of flexible, electrically conductive material separated by a compressible switch layer, the compressible switch layer including a plurality of holes, wherein the plurality of holes are dimensioned such that the two layers of electrically conductive material can contact each other to close the switch when the switch is sufficiently compressed.

35. An underbody support for a patient, the support comprising:

one or more inflatable chambers enclosing a volume; and

at least one of the inflatable chambers includes one or more compression sensitive switches for monitoring the volume of the inflatable chamber,

the one or more compression sensitive switches located within the inflatable chamber, the one or more compression sensitive switches are sized to close when the inflatable chamber is deflated to a desired residual volume,

a layer of compressible material is positioned over at least a portion of an upper surface of the one or more inflatable chambers,

at least one of the one or more layers of compressible material is bonded about its perimeter to two flexible side walls and two flexible end walls that are also made of polymeric foam, and

the two flexible side walls and two flexible end walls are fastened to the perimeter of a base layer forming a box-like structure made of flexible foam,

the box-like structure surrounds and contains the one or more inflatable chambers,

upper edges of the two flexible side walls hinge inward in response to the weight of the patient depressing a central region of at least one of the one or more layers of compressible material,

the hinging inward of the flexible side walls allows the layer of compressible material to deform maximally while accommodating the patient without creating a hammock effect.

36. An underbody support for a patient, the support comprising:

one or more inflatable chambers enclosing a volume; and

at least one of the inflatable chambers includes one or more compression sensitive switches for monitoring the volume of the inflatable chamber, the one or more compression sensitive switches located within the inflatable chamber;

wherein

the one or more compression sensitive switches are sized to close when the inflatable chamber is deflated to a desired residual volume,

wherein a control algorithm is configured to release air from the one or more inflatable chambers until a portion of the patient laying on the underbody support compresses and closes at least one of the one or more compression sensitive switches,

wherein compression and closure of one or more of the compression sensitive switches initiates the control algorithm that activates a pump and a valve to re-inflate the inflatable chambers until the patient is lifted off of the one or more compressed, compression sensitive switches and the one or more compression sensitive switches reopens, and

wherein the reopening of the said one or more compressed, compression sensitive switches initiates the control algorithm that turns the pump and the valve off so that the volume of the inflatable chamber is maintained in a controlled but partially deflated condition.
