Abstract

Biomass (e.g., plant biomass, animal biomass, microbial, and municipal waste biomass) is processed to produce useful products, such as food products and amino acids.

Claims

1. A method for processing a biomass, the method comprising:

treating a comminuted biomass that comprises cellulosic or lignocellulosics material with an electron beam radiation dose of between about 10 Mrad and about 1000 Mrad so as to reduce the recalcitrance of the cellulosic or lignocellulosic material, and

adding a solid enzyme to the treated biomass to produce a combination of the solid enzyme and the treated biomass.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the method further comprises:

adding water to the combination and then saccharifying the combination under conditions sufficient to produce a sugar-containing product.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising feeding the combination to an animal.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the method further comprises densifying the combination.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the enzyme is selected from the group consisting of phytase, cellulase, lactase, lipase, pepsin, catalase, xylanase, and pectinase.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the enzyme comprises a cellulase.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the biomass is selected from the group consisting of paper, paper products, paper waste, wood, particle board, sawdust, agricultural waste, sewage, silage, grasses, rice hulls, bagasse, jute, hemp, flax, bamboo, sisal, abaca, straw, corn cobs, corn stover, switchgrass, alfalfa, hay, coconut hair, cotton, seaweed, algae, and mixtures thereof.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the biomass comprises a genetically modified plant material.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein said treating the comminuted biomass further comprises one or more treatments selected from the group consisting of size reduction, radiation, sonication, pyrolysis, and oxidation.
