Abstract

A system for controlling access to one or more enclosed areas comprises at least one access card reader and controller powered via a Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) interface, each access card reader and controller being capable of controlling access through a particular entrance to a particular enclosed area and an access control server in communication with the at least one access card reader and controller, the access control server being capable of controlling the operation of the at least one access card reader and controller, and a signal converter disposed between the access card reader and the access control server. In a network mode of operation, the access control server is configured to perform authentication of a card identifier (ID) received from the at least one access card reader and controller and to signal the at least one access card reader and controller to unlock a door at the particular entrance to the particular enclosed area when the access control server has successfully authenticated the received card ID. In a standalone mode of operation, the at least one access card reader and controller is configured to perform local authentication of a received card ID independently of the access control server and to unlock a door at the particular entrance to the particular enclosed area when the at least one access card reader and controller has successfully authenticated the received card ID.

Claims

1. An access control system comprising:

a combined reader and door controller configured to;

receive a credential;

operate in a standalone mode, wherein in the standalone mode the combined reader and door controller is configured to sync and store credentials in an internal memory and further

configured to send a signal to unlock a door associated with the combined reader and door controller; and

operate as part of the access control system comprising one or more additional combined readers and door controllers when connected to a network;

serve data that can be displayed to a user external to the access control system; and

provide an interface for the user to digitally manage the access control system.

2. The access control system of claim 1, further comprising one or more Wiegand inputs to enable the combined reader and door controller to operate as part of the access control system.

3. The access control system of claim 1, wherein the combination reader and door controller is connected to one or more components of the access control system via ethernet.

4. The access control system of claim 1 wherein the combined reader and door controller is configured to receive the credential from an access card.

5. The access control system of claim 1, wherein the combination reader and door controller is powered over Ethernet.

6. The access control system of claim 1, wherein the network is wireless.

7. The access control system of claim 1, wherein the interface is displayed on a web browser.

8. The access control system of claim 1, further comprising an access control server.

9. The access control system of claim 8, wherein data transmitted to the access control server is encrypted.

10. A method for controlling access to one or more enclosed areas, the method comprising:

receiving, at a reader/controller, a credential;

operating in a standalone mode, wherein in the standalone mode the reader/controller;

syncs and stores credentials in an internal memory and;

sends a signal to unlock a door associated with the reader/controller; and

operating as part of an access control system comprising one or more additional reader/controllers when connected to a network;

serving data that can be displayed to a user external to the access control system; and

providing an interface for the user to digitally manage the access control system.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the reader/controller comprises one or more Wiegand inputs to enable the reader/controller to operate as part of the access control system.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein the reader/controller is connected to one or more components of the access control system via ethernet.

13. The method of claim 10, wherein the credential is received from an access card.

14. The method of claim 10, wherein the reader/controller is powered over ethernet.

15. The method of claim 10, wherein the network is wireless.

16. The method of claim 10, wherein the interface is displayed on a web browser.

17. The method of claim 10, wherein operating as part of the access control system comprises sending information from the reader/controller to an access control server.

18. The method of claim 17, further comprising encrypting data sent to the access control server.
