Abstract

Radiolucent composite implants. Some embodiments include reconfiguration indicators. Some embodiments include radio-opaque markers, especially along contours. Some embodiments are provided in kit form with accessories such as radiolucent drill guides and/or drives. Some embodiments have fiber reinforcement adapted for various usage scenarios. Some embodiments include metal components, for example, to increase strength. Also described are manufacturing methods.

Claims

1. A bone implant comprising:

a bone-supporting component comprising a fiber-reinforced polymer matrix composite, the bone-supporting component including a passage for receiving a fixation component, the passage comprising a threaded portion;

a fixation component configured to be received in the passage of the bone-supporting component; and

a sleeve between the fixation component and the passage;

the sleeve comprising a threaded outer surface configured to engage the threaded portion of the passage;

wherein the sleeve and fixation component are configured to slide in relation to one another when the fixation component is received in the passage and the bone implant is fully implanted.

2. The bone implant of claim 1, comprising a locking element which limits sliding of the sleeve and fixation component in relation to one another to a pre-defined travel.

3. The bone implant of claim 2, wherein the locking element engages a slot in the fixation component to limit sliding of the sleeve.

4. The bone implant of claim 3, wherein the locking element passes through a window in the sleeve to engage the slot in the fixation component.

5. The bone implant of claim 1, wherein the sliding in relation to one another is along a longitudinal extent of the passage.

6. The bone implant of claim 1, wherein the bone-supporting component comprises an intramedullary bone nail.

7. The bone implant of claim 6, wherein the sleeve extends through the intramedullary bone nail at a non-perpendicular angle to a longitudinal axis of the intramedullary bone nail defined at the position of the passage.

8. The bone implant of claim 1, wherein the sleeve is configured to reduce friction-induced wear between the fixation component and the passage.

9. The bone implant of claim 1, wherein the sleeve comprises metal.

10. The bone implant of claim 9, wherein the metal is titanium.

11. The bone implant of claim 1, wherein the sleeve is longer than the passage.

12. The bone implant of claim 11, wherein the sleeve protrudes from both ends of the passage.

13. The bone implant of claim 1, wherein the fixation component comprises a slot configured to be positioned at least partially within the sleeve, and a distance of sliding travel of the sleeve and fixation component in relation to one another is defined by a longitudinal length of the slot.

14. The bone implant of claim 1, wherein the bone-supporting component comprises a body with a head portion at an end of the body, and wherein the passage extends through the head portion.

15. The bone implant of claim 1, wherein the fixation component comprises a bone screw.

16. The bone implant of claim 15, wherein the bone screw comprises a threaded shaft portion for screwing into bone, and an unthreaded shaft portion received within the passage.

17. The bone implant of claim 15, wherein the bone screw is cannulated.

18. The bone implant of claim 15, wherein the bone screw comprises a connector configured to engage a screw insertion tool.

19. The bone implant of claim 1, wherein the fixation device comprises a fiber-reinforced polymer matrix composite.

20. The bone implant of claim 1, wherein the passage is threaded along a full length of the passage.

21. The bone implant of claim 1, wherein said fiber-reinforced polymer matrix composite is configured to convert compression reaction into tension of the fibers in said bone-supporting component.

22. The bone implant of claim 21, wherein said fiber-reinforced polymer matrix composite includes reinforcing elements configured in a U-shape in a plane perpendicular to a main axis of said fixation component.

23. The bone implant of claim 1, wherein said fixation component includes a reinforced portion configured to withstand torsional stresses of said fixation component.

24. The bone implant of claim 23, wherein said reinforced portion includes a ring of reinforcing fibers.

25. The bone implant of claim 24, wherein said ring of reinforcing fibers are one of circumferentially and spirally wound about at least a portion of said fixation component.
