System and method for independently operating multiple neurostimulation channels
First Claim
1. A system, comprising:
- a plurality of electrical terminals configured to be respectively coupled to a plurality of electrodes;
stimulation output circuitry configured to generate a plurality of pulsed electrical waveforms in a respective plurality of timing channels, wherein;
each of the plurality of timing channels corresponds to an electrode combination and a pulsed electrical waveform to be delivered using the electrode combination such that the plurality of timing channels includes a first timing channel and a second timing channel, the plurality of the pulsed electrical waveforms includes a first pulsed electrical waveform and a second pulsed electrical waveform, the plurality of electrodes includes first electrode combination and a second electrode combination, the first pulsed electrical waveform is delivered to the first electrode combination in the first timing channel and the second pulsed electrical waveform is delivered to the second electrode combination in the second timing channel, andat least two of the plurality of pulsed electrical waveforms have a different pulse frequency relative to each other; and
control circuitry configured to;
sequentially couple the stimulation output circuitry to different sets of the electrodes when the respective pulsed electrical waveforms in the plurality of channels do not occur at the same time, including sequentially couple the stimulation output circuitry only to the first electrode combination when the first pulsed electrical waveform in the first timing channel provides a pulse and the second electrical waveform in the second timing channel does not provide a pulse, and then couple the stimulation output circuitry only to the second electrode combination when the second pulsed waveform in the second timing channel provides a pulse and the first electrical waveform in the first timing channel does not provide a pulse, andcouple the stimulation output circuitry to a union of the different electrode sets when the respective pulsed electrical waveforms in the plurality of channels occur at the same time, including when both the first pulsed electrical waveform in the first timing channel and the second electrical waveform in the second timing channel provide a pulse, wherein the union of the different electrode sets includes all of the electrodes in the first electrode combination and the second electrode combination.

Abstract
A multi-channel neurostimulation system comprises a plurality of electrical terminals configured for being respectively coupled to a plurality of electrodes, stimulation output circuitry including electrical source circuitry of the same polarity configured for generating a plurality of pulsed electrical waveforms in a plurality of timing channels, and control circuitry configured for instructing the stimulation output circuitry to serially couple the electrical source circuitry to different sets of the electrodes when pulses of the respective pulsed electrical waveforms do not temporally overlap each other, and for instructing the stimulation output circuitry to couple the electrical source circuitry to a union of the different electrode sets when pulses of the respective pulsed electrical waveforms temporally overlap each other.

11. A method of delivering electrical stimulation energy from stimulation output circuitry to a plurality of electrodes, the method comprising:

generating a plurality of pulsed electrical waveforms in a respective plurality of timing channels, wherein; each of the plurality of timing channels corresponds to an electrode combination and a pulsed electrical waveform to be delivered using the electrode combination such that the plurality of timing channels includes a first timing channel and a second timing channel, the plurality of the pulsed electrical waveforms includes a first pulsed electrical waveform and a second pulsed electrical waveform, the plurality of electrodes includes first electrode combination and a second electrode combination, the first pulsed electrical waveform is delivered to the first electrode combination in the first timing channel and the second pulsed electrical waveform is delivered to the second electrode combination in the second timing channel, and at least two of the plurality of pulsed electrical waveforms have a different pulse frequency relative to each other; and sequentially coupling the stimulation output circuitry to different sets of the electrodes when the respective pulsed electrical waveforms in the plurality of channels do not occur at the same time, including sequentially coupling the stimulation output circuitry only to the first electrode combination when the first pulsed electrical waveform in the first timing channel provides a pulse and the second electrical waveform in the second timing channel does not provide a pulse, and then couple the stimulation output circuitry only to the second electrode combination when the second pulsed waveform in the second timing channel provides a pulse and the first electrical waveform in the first timing channel does not provide a pulse; and coupling the stimulation output circuitry to a union of the different electrode sets when the respective pulsed electrical waveforms in the plurality of channels occur at the same time, including when both the first pulsed electrical waveform in the first timing channel and the second electrical waveform in the second timing channel provide a pulse, wherein the union of the different electrode sets includes all of the electrodes in the first electrode combination and the second electrode combination. - View Dependent Claims (12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19)
