Abstract

The present disclosure relates to a module for adding a defined functionality to a lighting fixture. In one embodiment, the module is configured to provide wireless communication capability to a lighting fixture. The module may include a housing that is removably attachable to the lighting fixture. The module may also include electronics that are contained within the housing and adapted to communicate with a driver module of the lighting fixture and wirelessly communicate with at least one remote entity to provide wireless communication capability to the lighting fixture.

Claims

1. A module for adding wireless communication capability to a lighting fixture comprising:

a housing that is removably attachable to the lighting fixture, the housing comprising;

a snap-lock connector having a body and a spring member extending from the body; and

a barrier that acts as a plenum flame barrier when the housing is coupled to the lighting fixture, wherein the spring member extends between the body and the barrier; and

electronics contained within the housing and adapted to;

communicate with a driver module of the lighting fixture; and

wirelessly communicate with at least one remote entity to provide the wireless communication capability to the lighting fixture, wherein the driver module is configured to drive an LED light source based at least in part on an instruction from the electronics, and the electronics are further adapted to receive information from the at least one remote entity, generate the instruction based on the information, and provide the instruction to the driver module.

2. The module of claim 1 wherein the housing comprises at least one fixture locking member adapted to snap into at least one corresponding connector interface on the lighting fixture to couple the housing to the lighting fixture.

3. The module of claim 2 wherein the at least one fixture locking member is provided on the snap-lock connector that is attached to the housing.

4. The module of claim 3 wherein the snap-lock connector comprises a button member and is movably attached to the housing, such that when the button member is pushed, the at least one fixture locking member disengages the at least one corresponding connector interface.

5. The module of claim 3 wherein the snap-lock connector is removably attached to the housing.

The module of claim 1 wherein the housing comprises at least two pairs of channel guides such that each pair of channel guides forms a channel containing the snap-lock connector that comprises a fixture locking member adapted to snap into a corresponding connector interface on the lighting fixture to couple the housing to the lighting fixture.

7. The module of claim 6 wherein the snap-lock connector comprises a button member and when the button member is pushed, the fixture locking member disengages the corresponding connector interface.

8. The module of claim 7 wherein the spring member is adapted to bias the snap-lock connector in a position that keeps the fixture locking member engaged with the corresponding connector interface.

9. The module of claim 6 wherein the lighting fixture is an LED-based lighting fixture.

The module of claim 6 wherein the spring member extends from the body in a first direction, a button member that extends from the body in a second direction that is substantially opposite the first direction, two housing locking members that extend from the body and on either side of the spring member in substantially the first direction, and the fixture locking member extending from the body in a third direction that is substantially perpendicular to the first and second directions.

11. The module of claim 10 wherein housing locking barbs are located at ends of the two housing locking members and a fixture locking barb is located at an end of the fixture locking member.

12. The module of claim 1 wherein the first connector is accessible via an opening.

13. The module of claim 12 wherein the barrier surrounds the opening in the housing.

14. The module of claim 1 wherein the electronics are coupled to the driver module by a cable.

15. The module of claim 1 wherein the electronics receive power from the driver module.

16. The module of claim 1 wherein the housing has at least a front housing section that has a thinned portion and the electronics are provided at least in part on a printed circuit board and comprise a status LED that is located proximate to the thinned portion.

17. The module of claim 16 wherein the electronics are adapted to control the status LED to provide at least one of data and operational status.

18. The module of claim 16 wherein the thinned portion is provided on an inside surface of the front housing section.

19. The module of claim 18 wherein a logo is provided on an outside surface of the front housing section opposite the thinned portion.

20. The module of claim 1 wherein the driver module controls how the LED light source operates based on the instruction.

21. The module of claim 1 further comprising a user interface mounted on the housing and coupled to the electronics.

22. The module of claim 21 wherein the user interface comprises at least one of a button and a dipswitch.

23. The module of claim 22 wherein the user interface comprises a display.

24. The module of claim 1, wherein the electronics comprise a first connector and the driver module comprises a second connector that directly mates with the first connector such that the electronics and the driver module interface with one another via the first connector and the second connector.

25. A module for adding wireless communication capability to a lighting fixture comprising:

a housing; and

electronics contained within the housing and adapted to communicate with a driver module of the lighting fixture and wirelessly communicate with at least one remote entity to provide the wireless communication capability to the lighting fixture, wherein the housing has at least a front housing section that has a thinned portion and the electronics are provided at least in part on a printed circuit board and comprise a status LED that is located proximate to the thinned portion.

26. The module of claim 25 wherein the electronics are adapted to control the status LED to provide at least one of data and operational status.

27. The module of claim 25 wherein the thinned portion is provided on an inside surface of the front housing section.

28. The module of claim 27 wherein a logo is provided on an outside surface of the front housing section opposite the thinned portion.

29. The module of claim 26 wherein the housing is removably attachable to the lighting fixture.

30. The module of claim 29 wherein the housing comprises at least one fixture locking member adapted to snap into at least one corresponding connector interface on the lighting fixture to couple the housing to the lighting fixture.

31. The module of claim 30 wherein the electronics comprise a first connector and the driver module comprises a second connector that mates directly with the first connector when the housing is coupled to the lighting fixture.

33. The module of claim 25 wherein the driver module is configured to drive an LED light source and the electronics are adapted to receive information from the at least one remote entity and provide the information to the driver module where the driver module is separate from the electronics.

32. An apparatus comprising:

a lighting fixture comprising an LED light source, a driver module for driving the LED light source, and a first housing containing the driver module; and

a module for adding wireless communication capability to the lighting fixture comprising;

a second housing that is removably attachable to the first housing of the lighting fixture, the second housing comprising;

a snap-lock connector having a body and a spring member extending from the body; and

a barrier that acts as a plenum flame barrier when the second housing is coupled to the lighting fixture, wherein the spring member extends between the body and the barrier; and

electronics contained within the second housing and adapted to communicate with the driver module of the lighting fixture and wirelessly communicate with at least one remote entity to provide the wireless communication capability to the lighting fixture, wherein the electronics are adapted to receive information from the at least one remote entity, generate an instruction based on the information, and provide the instruction to the driver module, where the driver module drives the LED light source based at least in part on the instruction.

34. The apparatus of claim 32, wherein the electronics comprise a first connector and the driver module comprises a second connector that directly mates with the first connector such that the electronics and the driver module interface with one another via the first connector and the second connector.
