Abstract

A variety of methods and arrangements for improving the fuel efficiency of internal combustion engines based on skip fire operation of the engine are described. In one aspect the skip fire decisions are made on a working cycle by working cycle basis. During selected skipped working cycles, the corresponding cylinders are deactivated such that air is not pumped through the cylinder during the selected skipped working cycles. In some implementations, the cylinders are deactivated by holding associated intake and exhaust valves closed such that an air charge is not present in the working chamber during the selected skipped working cycles.

Claims

1. A method of controlling the operation of an internal combustion engine having a plurality of working chambers, each working chamber being generally arranged to operate in a succession of working cycles, the method comprising:

operating the engine in a skip fire operational mode, wherein during operation of the engine in the skip fire operational mode, a selected one of the working chambers will be fired during some working cycles and not fired during other working cycles; and

adjusting a setting of a component that affects a torque output associated with a selected firing of the selected working chamber based at least in part on a current skip/fire firing history of the selected working chamber.

2. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein the internal combustion engine is a spark ignition internal combustion engine and the adjusted setting is spark timing.

3. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein the adjusting setting controls the amount of fuel injected into the selected working chamber in association with the selected firing.

4. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein each working chamber has an associated intake valve and an associated exhaust valve, the method further comprising:

deactivating the associated working chamber during the skipped working cycles by holding the intake and exhaust valves closed such that air is not pumped through non-fired working chambers during the skipped working cycles; and

wherein firing decisions that determine which working cycles to fire and which working cycles to skip are made during operation of the engine on a working cycle by working cycle basis.

5. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein the component setting associated with each firing event of the selected working chamber is determined at least in part based on a then current firing history of the selected working chamber.

6. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein the component setting associated with each working cycle firing is determined at least in part based on a then current firing history of the associated working chamber.

A method as recited in claim 1 wherein when an active working cycle follows a skipped working cycle in the same working chamber, a spark timing for the selected firing is advanced relative to a spark timing of the working chamber when the active working cycle follows another active working cycle in the same working chamber in order to compensate for cooling of the working chamber that occurs during the skipped working cycles.

8. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein a spark timing associated with each working cycle firing is determined based at least in part on an injected fuel quanta.

9. A method as recited in claim 8 where the injected fuel quanta is delivered by port fuel injection.

10. A method as recited in claim 8 where the injected fuel quanta is delivered by direct fuel injection.

A method as recited in claim 1 wherein fired working cycles are active working cycles and some of the active working cycles have a first energy output level and other active working cycles have a second energy output level that is substantially less than the first energy output level, the first and second energy level output firings being interspersed.

12. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein the internal combustion engine is a four stroke piston engine having at least four working chambers and wherein the skip fire operation occurs while the engine is not idling and operating at an engine speed of at least 1000 RPM.

13. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein the firing decisions are made by a sigma delta converter and the selection of specific working cycles to be skipped and fired is dynamically determined during operation of the engine on a firing opportunity by firing opportunity basis.

14. A method as recited in claim 13 wherein the input to the sigma delta converter is a desired firing fraction.

15. An engine controller configured to implement the method of claim 1.

16. A computer readable program embodied in a non-transient computer readable medium comprising programmed instruction arranged to implement the method of claim 1.

17. A method of controlling the operation of an internal combustion engine having at least one working chamber, each working chamber being generally arranged to operate in a succession of working cycles, the method comprising:

operating the engine in a skip fire mode in which selected active working cycles are fired and selected skipped working cycles are skipped; and

when an active working cycle follows a skipped working cycle in the same working chamber, a quanta of fuel injected for delivery to the working chamber is increased relative to a quanta of fuel that would be delivered to the working chamber when the active working cycle follows another active working cycle in the same working chamber.

A method as recited in claim 17 wherein when an active working cycle follows a skipped working cycle in the same working chamber, a spark timing for the selected firing is advanced relative to a spark timing of the working chamber when the active working cycle follows another active working cycle in the same working chamber in order to compensate for cooling of the working chamber that occurs during the skipped working cycles.

19. A method as recited in claim 17, wherein each working chamber has an associated intake valve and an associated exhaust valve, the method further comprising:

deactivating the associated working chamber during the skipped working cycles by holding the intake and exhaust valves closed such that air is not pumped through non-fired working chambers during the skipped working cycles; and

wherein firing decisions that determine which working cycles to fire and which working cycles to skip are made during operation of the engine on a working cycle by working cycle basis.

20. A method as recited in claim 17 wherein the quanta of fuel injected in association with each active working cycle of a selected one of the working chambers is determined at least in part based on a then current firing history of the selected working chamber.

21. A method as recited in claim 17 wherein the quanta of fuel injected in association with each active working cycle is determined at least in part based on a then current firing history of the associated working chamber.

22. A method as recited in claim 17 where the injected fuel quanta is delivered by port fuel injection.

23. A method as recited in claim 17 where the injected fuel quanta is delivered by direct fuel injection.

24. A method as recited in claim 17 wherein the internal combustion engine is a four stroke piston engine having at least four working chambers and wherein the skip fire operation occurs while the engine is not idling and operating at an engine speed of at least 1000 RPM.

25. A method as recited in claim 17 wherein the firing decisions are made by a sigma delta converter and the selection of specific working cycles to be skipped and fired is dynamically determined during operation of the engine on a firing opportunity by firing opportunity basis.

26. A method as recited in claim 25 wherein the input to the sigma delta converter is a desired firing fraction.

27. An engine controller configured to implement the method of claim 17.

28. A computer readable program embodied in a non-transient computer readable medium comprising programmed instruction arranged to implement the method of claim 17.

29. An engine controller configured to direct operation of an engine having at least one working chamber in a skip fire manner in which selected working cycles are fired and selected working cycles are skipped, the engine controller including an engine settings controller arranged to determine an engine setting that affects a torque output associated with a selected firing of a selected one of the working chamber(s) based at least in part on a then current skip/fire firing history of the selected working chamber.

30. An engine controller as recited in claim 29 wherein the engine is a four stroke piston engine having at least four working chambers and the skip fire controller is arranged to direct skip fire operation while the engine is not idling and is operating at an engine speed of at least 1000 RPM.

31. An engine controller suitable for use with an internal combustion engine having a plurality of cylinders, each cylinder being arranged to operate in a succession of working cycles, the engine controller comprising:

a skip fire controller arranged to direct operation of the engine in a skip fire mode that causes selected active working cycles to be fired and selected skipped working cycles not to be fired, the skip fire controller being arranged to make firing decisions; and

the engine control being arranged such that when, during skip fire operation, an active working cycle follows a skipped working cycle in the same working chamber, a quanta of fuel injected for delivery to the working chamber is increased relative to a quanta of fuel that would be delivered to the working chamber when the active working cycle follows another active working cycle in the same working chamber.

An engine controller as recited in claim 31 wherein each working chamber has an associated intake valve and an associated exhaust valve, wherein the engine controller is arranged to direct the associated intake and exhaust valves to be held closed during each selected skipped working cycle such that an air charge is not present in the working chamber during the selected skipped working cycles and high pressure combusted gases are not present in the working chamber.

33. An engine controller as recited in claim 31 wherein the skip fire controller includes a sigma delta converter that makes the firing decisions.

An engine controller as recited in claim 31 wherein the engine controller is arranged to direct some of the active working cycles to have a first energy output level and other active working cycles to have a second energy output level that is substantially less than the first energy output level, the first and second energy level output firings being interspersed.

An engine controller as recited in claim 31 wherein the engine controller includes an engine control unit and a firing control co-processor arranged to cooperate with the engine control unit, wherein the engine control unit is arranged to control the operation of the engine in a first operational mode and the firing control co-processor is arranged to make skip/fire decisions during operation in the skip fire operational mode.

36. An engine controller as recited in claim 35 wherein the engine control unit and the firing control co-processor are implemented as separate units that are not integrated into a single integrated circuit chip.
