1. A surgical suturing system, the system comprising:

  • a reusable instrument having a shaft comprising a proximal end, a distal end, a longitudinal axis between the proximal and distal ends, and a receiver on the distal end with a rotary drive comprising a first torsional coupling;

    a disposable cartridge arranged as a modular unit configured for ready insertion into and removal from the receiver, the cartridge comprising a cartridge housing, a surgical needle, a length of suture connected to the needle, a needle driver operative to engage and move the needle relative the cartridge, a transmission operatively connected to the needle driver, and a second torsional coupling configured to rotationally join with the first torsional coupling such that the torsional couplings are axially aligned and maintain angular correspondence and thereby connect the rotary drive to the transmission.
