1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

  • determining, by executing an instruction with a processor of a portable processing device, first identification information and a first signal strength associated with a first radio frequency wireless signal received at the portable processing device;

    determining, by executing an instruction with the processor, whether the first identification information conforms with second identification information and whether the first signal strength meets a threshold; and

    in response to determining, at the portable processing device, that (1) the first identification information associated with the first radio frequency wireless signal conforms with the second identification information and (2) the first signal strength associated with the first radio frequency wireless signal meets the threshold, triggering activation of audio processing in the portable processing device of an audio signal detected separately from the first radio frequency wireless signal via an audio sensor of the portable processing device, the audio processing to collect research data related to media exposure from the audio signal.
