Abstract

A dimmer switch and dimmer system is described in which dimming for the entire system is controlled from a single device while on/off switching is controlled by individual devices at multiple locations. The main dimming device contains an alternate action switching circuit for opening and closing the gate circuit of a controllably conductive device. Each of the remote location switching devices consists of respective low voltage switches, each operable to operate the alternate action switching circuit in the main dimmer device and are connected thereto by wiring which carries only signal level voltages and currents. Each remote switch may be a wall-mounted switch containing a single, relatively large area push button which momentarily closes a short movement, low activation force pair of contacts when the large area push button is depressed by pressure applied to any portion over its surface.

Claims

1. A dimmer switch comprising:

first and second power leads connectable in series with a source of power and a load;

a controllably conductive device having first and second main electrodes connected between said first and second power leads and further having a control electrode;

control circuit means connected between at least one of said first and second main electrodes and said control electrode for applying a control signal having a maximum voltage substantially lower than the voltage of said source to said control electrode to cause said controlly conductive device to become conductive, .[.and.]. .Iadd.said control circuit means including a .Iaddend.variable control means.[., connected to said control circuit means.]. to variably apply said control signal to said control electrode;

said variable control means including a movable adjustment member which is incrementally movable between a minimum and maximum setting to determine the magnitude of said control signal;

first disconnect switch means locally operable between an engaged and a disengaged position, said first switch means connected in a series circuit which includes at least said controllably conductive device, said first switch means and said power leads, whereby opening said first switch means opens the electrical circuit between said .Iadd.controllably .Iaddend.conductive device and at least one of said power leads; and

second disconnect switch means operable between an engaged and disengaged position.Iadd., .Iaddend..[.and.]. an operating .[.mechanism.]. .Iadd.means .Iaddend.therefor.Iadd., and a human actuatable switch means for said operating means.Iaddend., said second switch means connected in said control circuit means and being connected between said at least one of said first and second main electrodes and said control electrode, said variable control means being independent of said first and second disconnect switch means.Iadd., said human actuable switch means for said operating means having at least first and second terminals, said first terminal being electrically coupled to one of said main electrodes of said controllably conductive device and said second terminal being connected to said operating means .Iaddend.whereby dimming settings associated with said variable control means are unaffected by changing the condition of said .[.first and.]. second .[.switches.]. .Iadd.switch .Iaddend.and whereby operation of said second switch means to one of its said positions prevents application of said control signal to said control electrode and renders said controllably conductive device nonconductive.

2. The dimmer switch of claim 1 which further includes a support plate for supporting, adjacent one surface thereof, said controllably conductive device, said control circuit means, said first switch means and said second switch means.

3. The dimmer switch of claim 2 which further includes an insulation housing secured to said one surface of said support plate and enclosing said controllably conductive device, said control circuit means, and said first and second switch means.

4. The dimmer switch of claim 1, wherein said variable control means comprises a potentiometer having a linearly movable control slider.

5. The dimmer switch of claim 4 which further includes a support plate for supporting, adjacent one surface thereof, said controllably conductive device, said control circuit means, said first switch means and said second switch means.

6. The dimmer switch of claim 5, wherein said linearly movable control slider has an operating member;

said support plate having an elongated slot therein;

said operating member being movable along said slot and being operable from areas adjacent the surface of said support plate which is opposite to said one surface thereof.

7. The dimmer switch of claim 6 which further includes an insulation housing secured to said one surface of said support plate and enclosing said controllably conductive device, said control circuit means, and said first and second switch means.

8. The dimmer switch of claim 6, wherein said linearly movable slider is operably connected to said first switch means whereby said first switch means is operated to its said disengaged position when said slider reaches one end position of its linear movement.

9. The dimmer switch of claim 8 which further includes an insulation housing secured to said one surface of said support plate and enclosing said controllably conductive device, said control circuit means, and said first and second switch means.

The dimmer switch of claim 2, 3, .[.4,.]. 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9, wherein said operating .[.mechanism.]. .Iadd.means .Iaddend.for said second switch means comprises a latching relay and an operating switch operable for pulsing said latching relay to change the conduction condition of said second switch means;

said operating switch having an operating member extending through said support plate;

said operating member being operable from areas adjacent the surface of said support plate which is opposite to said one surface thereof;

said operating member operating said operating switch with a short motion, low force activation input.

11. The dimmer switch of claim 10, wherein said operating switch is a momentary close push-button switch.

The system of claim 25 which further includes a plurality of remote switches, each identical to said remote switch means and located at a respective plurality of remote locations and each coupled to said operating means. .Iadd.28. The dimmer switch of claim 4, further comprising a support plate for supporting, adjacent one surface thereof, said controllably conductive device, said control circuit means, said first switch means and said second switch means and wherein said operating means for said second switch means comprises a latching relay and an operating switch operable for pulsing said latching relay to change the conduction condition of said second switch means;

said operating switch having an operating member extending through said support plate;

said operating member being operable from areas adjacent the surface of said support plate which is opposite to said one surface face thereof;

said operating member operating said operating switch with a short motion, low force activation input. .Iaddend. .Iadd.29. The dimmer switch of claim 1, wherein said operating means for said second switch means comprises a latching relay and an operating switch operable for pulsing said latching relay to change the conduction condition of said second switch means.

The system of claim 12, wherein said control means comprises a potentiometer having a linearly movable slider, and wherein said second switch means and said remote switch means each comprise momentary contact pushbutton switches. .Iaddend. .Iadd.31. 12. A power control system for a load which can be dimmed from at least a first location and can be switched on and off from at least a second location;

said power control system comprising a dimmer switch mounted at said first location and a remote switch .Iadd.means .Iaddend.mounted at said second location;

said dimmer switch comprising;

first and second power leads connectable in series with a source of power and a load;

a controllably conductive device having first and second main electrodes connected to said first and second power leads respectively, and further having a control electrode;

control circuit means connected between at least one of said first and second main electrodes and said control electrode for applying a control signal having a maximum voltage substantially lower than the voltage of said source to said control electrode to cause said controllably conductive device to become conductive, .[.and.]..Iadd.said control circuit means including a .Iaddend.variable .[.connected to said control circuit means.]. control means to variably apply said control signal to said control electrode;

a first air gap switch means operable between a conductive and a non-conductive condition and connected in said control circuit means and operably connected between said at least one of said first and second main electrodes and said control electrode, whereby operation of said first switch means to one of its said conduction conditions prevents application of said control signal to said control electrode and renders said controllably conductive device non-conductive;

a relay means operatively connected to said first switch means and operable in response to a voltage applied thereto to change the state of said first switch means;

said remote switch .Iadd.means .Iaddend.comprising second switch means operable with short actuation distance and operable with low force and between a conductive and non-conductive condition; and

circuit means including elongated low voltage, low current wires connecting said remote switch means in circuit relation with said relay means, .Iadd.said wires including at least first and second wires, said first wire being electrically coupled to one of said main electrodes of said controllably conductive device and said second wire being connected to said relay means .Iaddend.whereby operation of said remote switch to one of its said conduction conditions will change the conduction state of said controllably conductive device.

13. The system of claim 12 which further includes air gap disconnect switch means connected between said first and second power leads and in series with said controllably conductive device.

14. The system of claim 12, wherein said remote switch means is a low power momentary contact switch.

15. The system of claim 13, wherein said remote switch means is a low power momentary contact switch.

16. The system of claim 12 which further includes a plurality of remote switches, each identical to said remote switch and located at a respective plurality of remote locations and each coupled to said relay means.

20. The system of claim .[.12 or.]. 17, wherein said control means comprises a potentiometer having a linearly movable slider, and wherein said third switch means and said remote switch means each comprise momentary contact pushbutton switches.

17. A power control system for a load which can be switched on and off from at least first and second locations and which can be dimmed from said first location;

said power control system comprising a switch device mounted at said first location and a remote switch mounted at said second location;

said switch device comprising;

first and second power leads connectable in series with a source of power and a load;

a controllably conductive device having first and second main electrodes connected between said first and second power leads and further having a control electrode;

control circuit means connected between at least one of said first and second main electrodes and said control electrode for .[.applyiing.]. .Iadd.applying .Iaddend.a control signal having a maximum voltage substantially lower than the voltage of said source to said control electrode to cause said controllably conductive device to become conductive, and control means connected to said control circuit means to apply said control signal to said control electrode;

first air gap disconnect switch means locally operable between an engaged and disengaged position, said first switch means connected in a series circuit which includes at least said controllably conductive device, said first switch means and said power leads, whereby opening said first switch means opens the electrical circuit between said .Iadd.controllably .Iaddend.conductive device and at least one of said power leads;

second air gap disconnect switch means operable between an engaged and a disengaged position, said second switch connected in said control circuit means and being connected between said at least one of said first and second main electrodes and said control electrode, whereby operation of said second switch means to one of its said positions prevents application of said control signal to said control electrode and renders said controllably conductive device non-conductive;

operating means connected to said second switch means for changing the state of said second switch means between its engaged and disengaged positions in response to energization of said operating means;

a third air gap disconnect switch means and a remote air gap switch means located at said first and second locations, respectively, and operable between respective conductive and non-conductive conditions; and

circuit means including elongated low voltage wires connecting said third switch means and said remote switch means to said operating means, .Iadd.said wires including at least first and second wires, said first wire being electrically coupled to one of said main electrodes of said controllably conductive device and said second wire being connected to said operating means .Iaddend.whereby closure of either said third switch means or said remote switch means causes the energization of said operating means to change the state of said second switch means.

18. The system of claim 17, wherein said third switch means and said remote switch means are both low power momentary contact switches.

19. The system of claim 17 which further includes a plurality of remote switches, each identical to said remote switch means and located at a respective plurality of remote locations and each coupled to said operating means.

21. A switching device comprising:

first and second power leads connectable in series with a source of power and a load;

a controllably conductive device having first and second main electrodes connected to said first and second power leads respectively, and further having a control electrode;

control circuit means connected between at least one of said first and second main electrodes and said control electrode for applying a control signal having a maximum voltage substantially lower than the voltage of said source to said control electrode to cause said controllably conductive device to become conductive, .[.and.]. .Iadd.said control circuit means including a .Iaddend.variable control means .[.connected to said control circuit means.]. to variably apply said control signal to said control electrode;

said variable control means including a movable adjustment member which is incrementally movable between a minimum and maximum setting to determine the magnitude of said control signal.Iadd.;

.Iadd.first .Iaddend.switch means operable between a conductive and a non-conductive condition.Iadd., .Iaddend..[.and.]. an operating means therefor, .Iadd.and human actuatable switch means for said operating means, .Iaddend.said .Iadd.first .Iaddend.switch means connected in said control circuit means and being connected between said at least one of said first and second main electrodes and said control electrode, said variable control means being independent of said .Iadd.first .Iaddend.switch means.Iadd., said human actuatable switch means having at least first and second terminals, said first terminal being electrically coupled to one of said main electrodes of said controllably conductive device and said second terminal being connected to said operating means .Iaddend.whereby operation of said .Iadd.first .Iaddend.switch means to one of its said conditions prevents application of said control signal to said control electrode and renders said controllably conductive device non-conductive without altering a dimming setting associated with said device.

22. The switching device of claim 21, wherein said variable control means comprises a potentiometer having a linearly movable control slider.

23. The switching device of claim 22 which further includes a support plate for supporting, adjacent one surface thereof, said controllably conductive device, said control circuit means and said switch means.

24. The switching device of claim 23, wherein said linearly movable control slider has an operating member;

said support plate having an elongated slot therein;

said operating member being movable along said slot and being operable from areas adjacent the surface of said support plate which is opposite to said one surface thereof.

25. A power control system for a load which can be switched on and off from at least first and second locations;

said power control system comprising a master switch mounted at said first location and a remote switch mounted at said second location;

said master switch comprising;

first and second power leads connectable in series with a source of power and a load;

a controllably conductive device having first and second main electrodes connected to said first and second power leads respectively, and further having a control electrode;

control circuit means connected between at least one of said first and second main electrodes and said control electrode for applying a control signal having a maximum voltage substantially lower than the voltage of said source to said control electrode to cause said controllably conductive device to become conductive;

first switch means operable between a conductive and a non-conductive condition, said first switch means connected in said control circuit means and being connected between said at least one of said first and second main electrodes and said control electrode, whereby operation of said first switch means to one of its said conditions prevents application of said control signal to said control electrode and renders said controllably conductive device non-conductive;

operating means connected to said first switch means for changing the conduction state of said first switch means in response to energization of said operating means;

a second switch means and a remote switch means located at said first and second locations, respectively, and operable between respective conductive and non-conductive conditions; and

circuit means including elongated low voltage wires connecting said second switch means and said remote switch means to said operating means, .Iadd.said wires including at least first and second wires, said first wire being electrically coupled to one of said main electrodes of said controllably conductive device and said second wire being connected to said operating means .Iaddend.whereby .[.closure.]. .Iadd.operation .Iaddend.of either said second switch means or said remote switch means causes the energization of said operating means to change the state of said first switch means.

26. The system of claim 25, wherein said second switch means and said remote switch means are both low power momentary contact switches.
