Abstract

A lighting device comprising first and second groups of solid state light emitters, which emit light having peak wavelength in ranges of from 430 nm to 480 nm, and first and second groups of lumiphors which emit light having dominant wavelength in the range of from 555 nm to 585 nm. In some embodiments, if current is supplied to a power line, a combination of (1) light exiting the lighting device which was emitted by the first group of emitters, and (2) light exiting the lighting device which was emitted by the first group of lumiphors would have a correlated color temperature which differs by at least 50 K from a correlated color temperature which would be emitted by a combination of (3) light exiting the lighting device which was emitted by the second group of emitters, and (4) light exiting the lighting device which was emitted by the second group of lumiphors.

Claims

1. A lighting device comprising:

at least first and second solid state light emitters;

at least first and second portions of luminescent material,

wherein;

if electricity is supplied to the first solid state light emitter to cause the first solid state light emitter to emit light, at least a portion of light emitted from the first solid state light emitter would excite at least some of the first portion of luminescent material, and a mixture of light exiting the lighting device that was emitted from the first solid state light emitter and light exiting the lighting device that was emitted from the first portion of luminescent material would, in the absence of any additional light, have a mixed illumination corresponding to a first point on a 1931 CIE Chromaticity Diagram, said first point having a first correlated color temperature or color temperature;

if electricity is supplied to the second solid state light emitter to cause the second solid state light emitter to emit light, a portion of light emitted from the second solid state light emitter would excite at least some of the second portion of luminescent material, and a mixture of light exiting the lighting device that was emitted from the second solid state light emitter and light exiting the lighting device that was emitted from the second portion of luminescent material would, in the absence of any additional light, have a mixed illumination corresponding to a second point on a 1931 CIE Chromaticity Diagram, said second point having a second correlated color temperature or color temperature,

said first correlated color temperature or color temperature differing from said second correlated color temperature or color temperature by at least 50 K.

2. A lighting device as recited in claim 1, wherein:

the first solid state light emitter is a first light emitting diode chip,

the second solid state light emitter is a second light emitting diode chip,

the first portion of luminescent material comprises a first phosphor, and

the second portion of luminescent material comprises a second phosphor.

3. A lighting device as recited in claim 1, wherein:

the first solid state light emitter is a first light emitting diode chip,

the second solid state light emitter is a second light emitting diode chip,

the first portion of luminescent material comprises a first phosphor, and

at least some of the second portion of luminescent material comprises the first phosphor.

4. A lighting device as recited in claim 1, wherein the lighting device further comprises at least a first current adjuster which can be adjusted to adjust the current supplied to the first solid state light emitter.

5. A lighting device as recited in claim 1, wherein if all of the solid state light emitters in the lighting device are illuminated, a mixture of light exiting the lighting device would be white light.

6. A lighting device as recited in claim 1, wherein if all of the solid state light emitters in the lighting device are illuminated, a mixture of light exiting the lighting device would be non-white light.

7. A lighting device as recited in claim 1, wherein the first and second solid state light emitters each emit light having a peak wavelength in the range of from 430 nm to 480 nm.

8. A lighting device as recited in claim 7, wherein the first portion of luminescent material emits light having a dominant wavelength in the range of from about 555 nm to about 585 nm.

9. A lighting device as recited in claim 1, wherein said first correlated color temperature or color temperature differs from said second correlated color temperature or color temperature by at least 100 K.

10. A lighting device as recited in claim 1, wherein said first correlated color temperature or color temperature differs from said second correlated color temperature or color temperature by at least 200 K.

11. A lighting device as recited in claim 1, wherein said first correlated color temperature or color temperature differs from said second correlated color temperature or color temperature by at least 500 K.

12. A lighting device as recited in claim 1, wherein:

said first correlated color temperature or color temperature is in the range of from about 2700 K to about 3500 K, and

said second correlated color temperature or color temperature is in the range of from about 4500 K to about 6500 K.

13. A lighting device as recited in claim 1, wherein:

said first correlated color temperature or color temperature is in the range of from about 2200 K to about 3500 K, and

said second correlated color temperature or color temperature is in the range of from about 4500 K to about 6500 K.

14. A lighting device as recited in claim 1, wherein said lighting device is configured to vary a correlated color temperature and/or color temperature of a mixture of output light over a range of temperatures.

15. A lighting device as recited in claim 1, wherein said lighting device is configured to vary a correlated color temperature and/or color temperature of a mixture of output light at least over a range of from about 3500 K to about 4500 K.

16. A lighting device as recited in claim 1, wherein:

the lighting device further comprises at least a first power line and a second power line,

the first solid state light emitter is on the first power line,

the second solid state light emitter is on the second power line,

the correlated color temperature or color temperature of combined light exiting the lighting device can be altered by adjusting a current supplied to the first power line, adjusting a current supplied to the second power line, or adjusting respective currents supplied to the first and second power lines.

17. A lighting device as recited in claim 1, wherein:

said first correlated color temperature or color temperature is in the range of from about 2700 K to about 3500 K, and

said second correlated color temperature or color temperature is in the range of from about 3500 K to about 5000 K.

18. A lighting device as recited in claim 1, wherein:

said first correlated color temperature or color temperature is in the range of from about 3500 K to about 5000 K, and

said second correlated color temperature or color temperature is in the range of from about 4500 K to about 6500 K.

A lighting device as recited in claim 1, wherein if electricity is supplied to each of said first and second solid state light emitters, a mixture of light exiting the lighting device that was emitted from the first solid state light emitter and, light exiting the lighting device that was emitted from the first portion of luminescent material, light exiting the lighting device that was emitted from the second solid state light emitter and, light exiting the lighting device that was emitted from the second portion of luminescent material, would, in the absence of any additional light, have a mixed illumination that has a CRI of at least 85.

A lighting device as recited in claim 1, wherein said lighting device further comprises at least one reflective element having at least one aperture, said at least first and second solid state light emitters and said first and second portions of luminescent material being oriented such that light emitted from said at least one solid state light emitter and light emitted from said first and second portions of luminescent material exits from a remote end of said reflective element.

21. A lighting device as recited in claim 1, wherein said lighting device further comprises at least one enclosing structure that surrounds said at least first and second solid state light emitters and said first and second portions of luminescent material.

22. A lighting device as recited in claim 1, wherein said lighting device further comprises at least one mounting structure.

23. A lighting device as recited in claim 22, wherein said mounting structure comprises at least one circuit board.

24. A lighting device as recited in claim 22, wherein said mounting structure comprises at least one heat sink.

25. A lighting device as recited in claim 1, wherein said lighting device further comprises at least one power source.

26. A lighting device as recited in claim 4, wherein said lighting device further comprises a second current adjuster which can be adjusted to adjust the current supplied to the second solid state light emitter.

27. A lighting device comprising:

a first group of solid state light emitters;

a second group of solid state light emitters; and

at least first and second portions of luminescent material,

if electricity is supplied to the first group of solid state light emitters to cause the first group of solid state light emitters to emit light, at least a portion of light emitted from the first group of solid state light emitters would excite at least some of the first portion of luminescent material, and a mixture of light exiting the lighting device that was emitted from the first group of solid state light emitters and light exiting the lighting device that was emitted from the first portion of luminescent material would, in the absence of any additional light, have a mixed illumination corresponding to a first point on a 1931 CIE Chromaticity Diagram, said first point having a first correlated color temperature or color temperature;

if electricity is supplied to the second group of solid state light emitters to cause the second group of solid state light emitters to emit light, a portion of light emitted from the second group of solid state light emitters would excite at least some of the second portion of luminescent material, and a mixture of light exiting the lighting device that was emitted from the second group of solid state light emitters and light exiting the lighting device that was emitted from the second portion of luminescent material would, in the absence of any additional light, have a mixed illumination corresponding to a second point on a 1931 CIE Chromaticity Diagram, said second point having a second correlated color temperature or color temperature,

said first correlated color temperature or color temperature differing from said second correlated color temperature or color temperature by at least 50 K.

28. A lighting device as recited in claim 27, wherein:

the lighting device further comprises at least a first power line and a second power line,

the first group of solid state light emitters are on the first power line,

the second group of solid state light emitters are on the second power line,

the correlated color temperature or color temperature of combined light exiting the lighting device can be altered by adjusting a current supplied to the first power line, adjusting a current supplied to the second power line, or adjusting respective currents supplied to the first and second power lines.

29. A lighting device as recited in claim 27, wherein:

the first group of solid state light emitters comprises at least a first solid state light emitter, and

the second group of solid state light emitters comprises at least a second solid state light emitter.

30. A lighting device as recited in claim 27, wherein:

said lighting device further comprises at least a first power line and a second power line,

a first ratio is equal to (1) a number of solid state light emitters in said second group of solid state light emitters, directly or switchably electrically connected to said first power line, divided by (2) a number of solid state light emitters in said first group directly or switchably electrically connected to said first power line,

a second ratio is equal to (3) a number of solid state light emitters in said second group of solid state light emitters, directly or switchably electrically connected to said second power line, divided by (4) a number of solid state light emitters in said first group of solid state light emitters directly or switchably electrically connected to said second power line, and

said first ratio differs from said second ratio.

31. A lighting device as recited in claim 30, wherein said first ratio is equal to zero.
