1. A perfusion system configured for maintaining an ex-vivo heart in a functioning state under physiological or near physiological conditions comprising:

  • a first chamber containing a first solution comprising one or more cardio stimulants selected from the group consisting of catecholamines, peptides, polypeptides, β

    2-adrenoreceptor blocking agents, buplinarol, pindolol, alprenolol, cardiac glycosides, digitalis, palustrin, and ferulic acid; and

    a plurality of amino acids selected from the group consisting of alanine, arginine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, histidine, isoleucine, leucine, methionine, phenylalanine, proline, serine, threonine, tryptophan, tyrosine, valine, and lysine that do not include asparagine, glutamine, and cysteine;

    a second chamber containing a second solution comprising one or more carbohydrates selected from the group consisting of monosaccharides, disaccharides, oligosaccharides, and polysaccharides; and

    a third chamber containing a priming solution comprising mannitol, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, magnesium sulfate heptahydrate, and sodium glycerophosphate.
