Abstract

An apparatus for delivering a bolus of a medical agent to a patient. The apparatus comprises a pump mechanism, a data input device, and a processor in data communication with the keypad and arranged to control the pump mechanism. The processor is programmed to receive data specifying a bolus amount through the data port, receive data regarding duration through the data port, receive a percentage through the data port, the percentage defining a portion of the bolus amount to deliver immediately upon executing a deliver command and a remainder of the bolus amount to deliver over the duration upon executing a deliver command, and execute the deliver command thereby controlling the pump mechanism to deliver the bolus. Also a method of temporarily adjusting the delivery rate of an infusion pump. The infusion pump is programmed to deliver a basal rate. The method comprises prompting a user to select whether to enter the temporary rate as a percent of the current delivery rate or as a new delivery rate; entering into the pump a period of time having a beginning and an end; entering into the pump a temporary basal rate; and delivering the therapeutic agent at a delivery rate substantially equal to the temporary basal rate during the period of time.

Claims

1. A method of delivering an insulin bolus from a programmable insulin pump having a user interface for programming the pump to deliver insulin to a user, comprising:

storing a selection of an increment size for calculating insulin boluses;

receiving a command enabling an audio bolus program for delivery of an insulin bolus as an audio bolus;

receiving a command initiating the audio bolus program when the audio bolus program is enabled;

receiving at least one command to increase the audio bolus by the stored increment size selection;

issuing an audible sound corresponding to each received command to increase the audio bolus and increasing the audio bolus in response to each received command;

receiving a command to deliver the audio bolus; and

causing the audio bolus to be delivered in response to receiving the command to deliver the audio bolus,

wherein the commands for initiating the audio bolus program and increasing the audio bolus are all received through a single common button on the user interface of the programmable insulin pump.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the command for delivering the audio bolus is received through the single common button on the user interface of the programmable insulin pump.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein each audible sound corresponding to each received command to increase the audio bolus is the same.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising issuing an audible sound upon initiating the audio bolus.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the audible sound issued upon initiating the audio bolus is different from the audible sound corresponding to each received command to increase the audio bolus.

6. The method of claim 2, further comprising cancelling the audio bolus if the single common button is not selected after a predetermined time after the audio bolus is initiated.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising visually displaying on the user interface an amount of the audio bolus each time a command is received to increase the audio bolus.

33. The method of claim 1, further comprising storing a selection of a type of unit from a plurality of types of units to use for determining insulin boluses, the plurality of types of units including units of insulin and grams of carbohydrates.

8. A programmable insulin pump, comprising:

a drive mechanism adapted to facilitate delivery of insulin to a user;

a user interface adapted to receive input data from a user for programming delivery of insulin with the drive mechanism;

a processor operably connected to the drive mechanism and in data communication with the user interface to control the drive mechanism based on input data received through the user interface, the processor further adapted to;

store a selection of an increment size for calculating insulin boluses;

receive a command enabling an audio bolus program for delivery of an insulin bolus as an audio bolus;

receive a command initiating the audio bolus program when the audio bolus program is enabled;

receive at least one command to increase the audio bolus by the stored increment size selection;

cause an audible sound corresponding to each received command to increase the audio bolus and increasing the audio bolus in response to each received command;

receive a command to deliver the audio bolus; and

cause the drive mechanism to deliver the audio bolus in response to receiving the command to deliver the audio bolus,

wherein the user interface includes an audio bolus button, and the processor is adapted to receive the commands for initiating the audio bolus program and increasing the audio bolus through selection of the audio bolus button.

9. The programmable insulin pump of claim 8, wherein the processor is further adapted to receive the command for delivering the audio bolus through selection of the audio bolus button.

10. The programmable insulin pump of claim 8, wherein the processor is further adapted to cause each audible sound corresponding to each received command to increase the audio bolus to be the same.

11. The programmable insulin pump of claim 8, wherein the processor is further adapted to cause an audible sound upon initiating the audio bolus.

12. The programmable insulin pump of claim 11, wherein the audible sound issued upon initiating the audio bolus is different from the audible sound corresponding to each received command to increase the audio bolus.

13. The programmable insulin pump of claim 9, wherein the processor is further adapted to cancel the audio bolus if the audio bolus button is not selected after a predetermined time after the audio bolus is initiated.

14. The programmable insulin pump of claim 8, wherein the processor is further adapted to visually display on the user interface an amount of the audio bolus each time a command is received to increase the audio bolus.

34. The programmable insulin pump of claim 8, wherein the processor is further adapted to store a selection of a type of unit from a plurality of types of units to use for determining insulin boluses, the plurality of types of units including units of insulin and grams of carbohydrates.

15. A method of delivering a bolus from a programmable insulin pump having a user interface for programming the pump to deliver insulin to a user, comprising:

enabling an audio bolus function upon receiving a command enabling an audio bolus for delivery of a bolus of insulin;

initiating an audio bolus program upon detecting selection of an audio bolus button when the audio bolus function is enabled;

detecting at least one incremental selection of the audio bolus button for incrementally increasing a size of the audio bolus;

issuing an audible sound corresponding to each incremental selection of the audio bolus button;

incrementally increasing the size of the audio bolus in response to each incremental selection of the audio bolus button to determine a size of the audio bolus;

following determination of the size of the audio bolus, receiving an additional selection of the audio bolus button;

causing the audio bolus to be delivered in response to the additional selection of the audio bolus button.

16. The method of claim 15, further comprising storing a selection of a type of unit from a plurality of types of units to use for determining insulin boluses.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the plurality of types of units include units of insulin and grams of carbohydrates.

18. The method of claim 15, further comprising storing a selection of an increment size for calculating insulin boluses.

19. The method of claim 15, wherein each audible sound corresponding to each received command to increase the audio bolus is the same.

20. The method of claim 15, further comprising issuing an audible sound upon initiating the audio bolus.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein the audible sound issued upon initiating the audio bolus is different from the audible sound corresponding to each received command to increase the audio bolus.

22. The method of claim 15, further comprising cancelling the audio bolus if the audio bolus button is not selected after a predetermined time after the audio bolus is initiated.

23. The method of claim 15, further comprising visually displaying on the user interface an amount of the audio bolus each time a command is received to increase the audio bolus.

24. A programmable insulin pump, comprising:

a drive mechanism adapted to facilitate delivery of insulin to a user;

a user interface adapted to receive input data from a user for programming delivery of insulin with the drive mechanism, the user interface including an audio bolus button;

a processor operably connected to the drive mechanism and in data communication with the user interface to control the drive mechanism based on input data received through the user interface, the processor further adapted to;

enabling an audio bolus function upon receiving a command enabling an audio bolus for delivery of a bolus of insulin;

initiate an audio bolus program upon detecting selection of the audio bolus button when the audio bolus function is enabled;

detect at least one incremental selection of the audio bolus button for incrementally increasing a size of the audio bolus;

cause an audible sound corresponding to each incremental selection of the audio bolus button;

incrementally increase the size of the audio bolus in response to each incremental selection of the audio bolus button to determine a size of the audio bolus;

following determination of the size of the audio bolus, receive an additional selection of the audio bolus button;

cause the audio bolus to be delivered in response to the additional selection of the audio bolus button.

25. The programmable insulin pump of claim 24, wherein the processor is further adapted to store a selection of a type of unit from a plurality of types of units to use for determining insulin boluses.

26. The programmable insulin pump of claim 25, wherein the plurality of types of units include units of insulin and grams of carbohydrates.

27. The programmable insulin pump of claim 24, wherein the processor is further adapted to store a selection of an increment size for calculating insulin boluses.

28. The programmable insulin pump of claim 24, wherein the processor is further adapted to cause each audible sound corresponding to each received command to increase the audio bolus to be the same.

29. The programmable insulin pump of claim 24, wherein the processor is further adapted to cause an audible sound upon initiating the audio bolus.

30. The programmable insulin pump of claim 29, wherein the audible sound issued upon initiating the audio bolus is different from the audible sound corresponding to each received command to increase the audio bolus.

31. The programmable insulin pump of claim 24, wherein the processor is further adapted to cancel the audio bolus if the audio bolus button is not selected after a predetermined time after the audio bolus is initiated.

32. The programmable insulin pump of claim 24, wherein the processor is further adapted to visually display on the user interface an amount of the audio bolus each time a command is received to increase the audio bolus.
