Abstract

An electronic device provides, to a display, data to present a user interface with a plurality of user interface objects that includes a first user interface object. A current focus is on the first user interface object. The device, in response to determining that inactivity criteria are satisfied, provides data to visually distinguish the first user interface object in a first manner from the other user interface objects in the plurality of user interface objects; and, after providing the data to visually distinguish the first user interface object in the first manner: detects interaction by a user with the electronic device or with another device in communication with the electronic device; and, in response, provide, to the display, data to cease visually distinguishing the first user interface object in the first manner from the other user interface objects in the plurality of user interface objects.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

at an electronic device with one or more processors and memory, wherein the electronic device is in communication with a display;

providing, by the electronic device to the display of the electronic device, data to present a user interface with a plurality of user interface objects, wherein;

the plurality of user interface objects includes a first user interface object, and

a current focus is on the first user interface object;

while the display is presenting the user interface, determining that inactivity criteria are satisfied, wherein the inactivity criteria are satisfied when the electronic device or a remote control in communication with the electronic device detects that the remote control is stationary;

in response to determining that the inactivity criteria are satisfied, the electronic device providing, to the display, data to visually distinguish the first user interface object in a first manner from the other user interface objects in the plurality of user interface objects;

and,

after providing, to the display, the data to visually distinguish the first user interface object in the first manner;

detecting, by the electronic device, interaction by a user with the electronic device or with another device in communication with the electronic device; and

,

in response to detecting, by the electronic device, interaction by the user with the electronic device or with another device in communication with the electronic device, providing by the electronic device, to the display, data to cease visually distinguishing the first user interface object in the first manner from the other user interface objects in the plurality of user interface objects.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein:

the inactivity criteria are satisfied when no user input has been detected by the electronic device or another device in communication with the electronic device for a predefined duration.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein:

visually distinguishing the first user interface object in the first manner includes increasing the size of the first user interface object from a first size to a second size.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein:

ceasing to visually distinguish the first user interface object in the first manner includes reducing the size of the first user interface object to the first size.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein:

visually distinguishing the first user interface object in the first manner includes highlighting the first user interface object.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein:

visually distinguishing the first user interface object in the first manner includes dimming one or more portions of the user interface other than the first user interface object.

7. The method of claim 1, including:

in response to determining that dark screen criteria are satisfied, providing, to the display, data to display a blank screen.

8. The method of claim 1, including:

in response to determining that dark screen criteria are satisfied, providing, to the display, data to dim the entire user interface including the first user interface object.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein detecting interaction by a user with the electronic device or with another device in communication with the electronic device includes detecting movement of the remote control.

10. An electronic device, comprising:

a display;

a touch-sensitive surface;

one or more processors;

memory; and

one or more programs, wherein the one or more programs are stored in the memory and configured to be executed by the one or more processors, the one or more programs including instructions for;

providing, to the display, data to present a user interface with a plurality of user interface objects, wherein;

the plurality of user interface objects includes a first user interface object, and

a current focus is on the first user interface object;

while the display is presenting the user interface, determining that inactivity criteria are satisfied, wherein the inactivity criteria are satisfied when the electronic device or a remote control in communication with the electronic device detects that the remote control is stationary;

in response to determining that the inactivity criteria are satisfied, providing, to the display, data to visually distinguish the first user interface object in a first manner from the other user interface objects in the plurality of user interface objects; and

,

after providing, to the display, the data to visually distinguish the first user interface object in the first manner;

detecting interaction by a user with the electronic device or with another device in communication with the electronic device; and

,

in response to detecting interaction by the user with the electronic device or with another device in communication with the electronic device, providing, to the display, data to cease visually distinguishing the first user interface object in the first manner from the other user interface objects in the plurality of user interface objects.

11. The electronic device of claim 10, wherein:

the inactivity criteria are satisfied when no user input has been detected by the electronic device or another device in communication with the electronic device for a predefined duration.

12. The electronic device of claim 10, wherein:

visually distinguishing the first user interface object in the first manner includes increasing the size of the first user interface object from a first size to a second size.

13. The electronic device of claim 12, wherein:

ceasing to visually distinguish the first user interface object in the first manner includes reducing the size of the first user interface object to the first size.

14. The electronic device of claim 10, wherein:

visually distinguishing the first user interface object in the first manner includes highlighting the first user interface object.

15. The electronic device of claim 10, wherein:

visually distinguishing the first user interface object in the first manner includes dimming one or more portions of the user interface other than the first user interface object.

16. The electronic device of claim 10, wherein the one or more programs further include instructions for:

in response to determining that dark screen criteria are satisfied, providing, to the display, data to display a blank screen.

17. The electronic device of claim 10, wherein the one or more programs further include instructions for:

in response to determining that dark screen criteria are satisfied, providing, to the display, data to dim the entire user interface including the first user interface object.

18. The electronic device of claim 10, wherein detecting interaction by a user with the electronic device or with another device in communication with the electronic device includes detecting movement of the remote control.

19. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing one or more programs, the one or more programs comprising instructions, which when executed by an electronic device with a display, and a touch-sensitive surface, cause the device to:

provide, to the display, data to present a user interface with a plurality of user interface objects, wherein;

the plurality of user interface objects includes a first user interface object, and

a current focus is on the first user interface object;

while the display is presenting the user interface, determine that inactivity criteria are satisfied, wherein the inactivity criteria are satisfied when the electronic device or a remote control in communication with the electronic device detects that the remote control is stationary;

in response to determining that the inactivity criteria are satisfied, provide, to the display, data to visually distinguish the first user interface object in a first manner from the other user interface objects in the plurality of user interface objects; and

,

after providing, to the display, the data to visually distinguish the first user interface object in the first manner;

detect interaction by a user with the electronic device or with another device in communication with the electronic device; and

,

in response to detecting interaction by the user with the electronic device or with another device in communication with the electronic device, provide, to the display, data to cease visually distinguishing the first user interface object in the first manner from the other user interface objects in the plurality of user interface objects.

20. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 19, wherein:

the inactivity criteria are satisfied when no user input has been detected by the electronic device or another device in communication with the electronic device for a predefined duration.

21. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 19, wherein:

visually distinguishing the first user interface object in the first manner includes increasing the size of the first user interface object from a first size to a second size.

22. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 21, wherein:

ceasing to visually distinguish the first user interface object in the first manner includes reducing the size of the first user interface object to the first size.

23. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 19, wherein:

visually distinguishing the first user interface object in the first manner includes highlighting the first user interface object.

24. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 19, wherein:

visually distinguishing the first user interface object in the first manner includes dimming one or more portions of the user interface other than the first user interface object.

25. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 19, wherein the one or more programs further include instructions, which, when executed by the electronic device, cause the device to:

in response to determining that dark screen criteria are satisfied, provide, to the display, data to display a blank screen.

26. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 19 wherein the one or more programs further include instructions, which, when executed by the electronic device, cause the device to:

in response to determining that dark screen criteria are satisfied, provide, to the display, data to dim the entire user interface including the first user interface object.

27. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 19, wherein detecting interaction by a user with the electronic device or with another device in communication with the electronic device includes detecting movement of the remote control.
