Abstract

A data-processing tool for displaying real-time patient data on remote and/or mobile devices. The tool renders graphical data on the screen of the remote device in a manner that makes it practical for the health care provider to review the data. Charting components provide landscape support, an ability to overlay patient data and patient images, zoom in/zoom out, custom variable speed scrolling, split screen support, and formatting control. The methodology operates as an asynchronous application, allowing patient data to be streamed in real-time to the handheld device while conserving enough CPU power to simultaneously allow the end user to interact at will with the responsive display application. Finally, the methodology implements an IT management console that allows system managers to monitor the exchange of data between hospital systems and the primary database, including all patient data packets, notifications and alerts, connected remote devices, etc.

Claims

1. A method for remote monitoring of patient physiological data, the method comprising:

receiving, by one or more processors, patient physiological data, the patient physiological data having been collected from a patient using at least one patient physiological sensor;

establishing, by one or more processors, a customized charting control to provide display characteristics associated to a remote-handheld data processing device, the display characteristics comprising a screen size and display memory capacities of a display of a remote-handheld data processing device;

conditioning, by one or more processors, the patient physiological data by adjusting the patient physiological data based on the screen size and the display memory capacities of the display of the remote-handheld data processing device to reduce a transmission time over a wide area digital network and to reduce a volume of the patient physiological data to provide conditioned patient physiological data, the conditioned patient physiological data comprising a format and an amount of data extracted from the patient physiological data that depend on the screen size and the display memory capacities of the display of the remote-handheld data processing device, the format defining sizes of displayable components of the patient physiological data, such that a presentation of the conditioned patient physiological is compressed for display in a discernable manner on the display of the remote-handheld data processing device relative to the screen size;

transmitting, by one or more processors, the conditioned patient physiological data in real-time over the wide area digital network;

receiving the conditioned patient physiological data in real-time at the remote-handheld data processing device, the remote-handheld data processing device executing a computer-executable application for displaying the patient physiological data on the display of the remote-handheld data processing device;

reconditioning, by the remote-handheld data processing device, the conditioned patient physiological data to display the patient physiological data on the remote-handheld data processing device by formatting the conditioned patient physiological data for display on the remote-handheld data processing device; and

providing, for display on the display of the remote-handheld data processing device, by the computer-executable application, the patient physiological data comprising a trend view of the patient physiological data stored in a buffer.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein reconditioning the conditioned patient physiological data is achieved using an application program interface (API) that provides the computer-executable application direct access to a video display memory of the remote-handheld data processing device.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein additional patient physiological data is synchronized to the remote-handheld data processing device while displaying the patient physiological data.

4. The method of claim 3, further comprising responding to user input to the remote-handheld data processing device by adjusting displayed patient physiological data while receiving the additional patient physiological data.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein displaying the patient physiological data includes presentation of the patient physiological data in a software-generated semi-transparent overlay within the display.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the patient physiological data comprise multi-channel patient physiological data that is simultaneously displayed in the display.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein reconditioning the conditioned patient physiological data further comprises compressing the conditioned patient physiological data for reduced size presentation in the display.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein compressing the conditioned patient physiological data for reduced size presentation further includes providing a reduction in a volume of the conditioned patient physiological data and a reduction in a period of time required to render the patient physiological data in the display.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the patient physiological data comprises obstetric patient data comprising maternal uterine contraction data and fetal heart rate data.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the patient physiological data comprises cardiopulmonary patient data comprising respiration rate data and heart rate data.

11. The method of claim 1, further comprising identifying and selecting anomalous events within the patient physiological data.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving the conditioned patient physiological data comprises establishing a wired data communication link and downloading the conditioned patient physiological data.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein displaying the patient physiological data comprises time sequentially displaying the patient physiological data.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the time sequential display of the patient physiological data comprises a real-time display of the patient physiological data.

15. The method of claim 13, wherein the time sequential display of the patient physiological data comprises a historical trending time display of the patient physiological data.

16. The method of claim 13, wherein the time sequential display comprises a dynamic progressive display of the patient physiological data across the display.

17. The method of claim 16, further comprising controlling the display of the patient physiological data to switch the presentation of the patient physiological data between a real-time presentation and a historical time presentation.

18. A system for remote monitoring of patient physiological data, the system comprising:

a server system that performs operations comprising;

receiving patient physiological data, the patient physiological data having been collected from a patient using at least one patient physiological sensor,

establishing a customized charting control to provide display characteristics associated to a remote-handheld data processing device, the display characteristics comprising a screen size and display memory capacities of a display of a remote-handheld data processing device,

conditioning the patient physiological data by adjusting the patient physiological data based on the screen size and the display memory capacities of the display of the remote-handheld data processing device to reduce a transmission time over a wide area digital network and to reduce a volume of the patient physiological data to provide conditioned patient physiological data, the conditioned patient physiological data comprising a format and an amount of data extracted from the patient physiological data that depend on the screen size and the display memory capacities of the display of the remote-handheld data processing device, the format defining sizes of displayable components of the patient physiological data, such that a presentation of the conditioned patient physiological is compressed for display in a discernable manner on the display of the remote-handheld data processing device relative to the screen size, and

transmitting the conditioned patient physiological data in real-time over the wide area digital network; and

a remote-handheld data processing device that executes a computer-executable application for displaying the patient physiological data on a display of the remote-handheld data processing device and that performs operations comprising;

receiving the conditioned patient physiological data in real-time,

reconditioning the conditioned patient physiological data to display the patient physiological data on the remote-handheld data processing device by formatting the conditioned patient physiological data for display on the remote-handheld data processing device, and

providing, for display on the display of the remote-handheld data processing device, using the computer-executable application, the patient physiological data comprising a trend view of the patient physiological data stored in a buffer.

19. The system of claim 18, wherein reconditioning the conditioned patient physiological data is achieved using an application program interface (API) that provides the computer-executable application direct access to a video display memory of the remote-handheld data processing device.

20. The system of claim 18, wherein additional patient physiological data is synchronized to the remote-handheld data processing device while displaying the patient physiological data.

21. The system of claim 20, wherein operations further comprise responding to user input to the remote-handheld data processing device by adjusting displayed patient physiological data while receiving the additional patient physiological data.

22. The system of claim 18, wherein displaying the patient physiological data includes presentation of the patient physiological data in a software-generated semi-transparent overlay within the display.

23. The system of claim 18, wherein the patient physiological data comprise multi-channel patient physiological data that is simultaneously displayed in the display.

33. The system of claim 30, wherein the time sequential display comprises a dynamic progressive display of the patient physiological data across the display.

34. The system of claim 33, wherein operations further comprise controlling the display of the patient physiological data to switch the presentation of the patient physiological data between a real-time presentation and a historical time presentation.
