Abstract

An extensible communication system is described herein. The system includes a first module for receiving a root index value and for generating a constant amplitude zero auto-correlation sequence based on the root value. The system further includes a second module for receiving a seed value and for generating a Pseudo-Noise sequence based on the seed value. The system further includes a third module for modulating the constant amplitude zero auto-correlation sequence by the Pseudo-Noise sequence and for generating a complex sequence. The system further includes a fourth module for translating the complex sequence to a time domain sequence, wherein the fourth module applies a cyclic shift to the time domain sequence to obtain a shifted time domain sequence.

Claims

1. An extensible communication system, comprising:

a memory storing program instructions; and

a processor, upon executing the program instructions, configured to;

select a root index value to signal to a receiver device a major version number, wherein the major version number corresponds to a service type or mode that is to be communicated to the receiver device;

generate a constant amplitude zero auto-correlation sequence based on the selected root index value;

select a seed value to signal to the receiver device a minor version number within the major version number;

generate a Pseudo-Noise sequence based on the selected seed value;

modulate the constant amplitude zero auto-correlation sequence by the Pseudo-Noise sequence and generate a complex sequence; and

translate the complex sequence to a time domain sequence.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the selected root index value comprises a non-prime number.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the processor is further configured to generate the Pseudo-Noise sequence using a linear feedback shift register.

4. The system of claim 3, wherein the processor is further configured to operate the linear feedback shift register based on a generator polynomial specifying taps in a linear feedback shift register feedback path.

The system of claim 3, wherein the processor is further configured to operate the linear feedback shift register based on a generator polynomial specifying taps in a linear feedback shift register feedback path, wherein specification of the generator polynomial and an initial state of the linear feedback shift register represent the seed value.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the time domain sequence comprises a synchronization signal.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein the processor is further configured to apply a cyclic shift to the time domain sequence to obtain a shifted time domain sequence, the shifted time domain sequence comprises control signaling configured to permit reception and decoding of a waveform.

The system of claim 1, wherein to modulate the constant amplitude zero auto-correlation sequence by the Pseudo-Noise sequence, the processor is further configured to generate a product of the constant amplitude zero auto-correlation sequence and the Pseudo-Noise sequence to have a reflective symmetry about a DC subcarrier.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein the processor is further configured to apply a cyclic shift to the time domain sequence to obtain a shifted time domain sequence.

10. The system of claim 9, wherein the cyclic shift is representative of communication information.

The system of claim 9, wherein the shifted time domain sequence is one symbol in a plurality of symbols and the processor is further configured to generate the cyclic shift of the one symbol based on an absolute cyclic shift of a preceding symbol and a relative cyclic shift of the one symbol, the relative cyclic shift being relative to the absolute cyclic shift of the preceding symbol.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein the processor is further configured to invert a final symbol of the plurality of symbols relative to a symbol preceding the final symbol to indicate termination of the plurality of symbols.

13. The system of claim 1, wherein the processor is further configured to broadcast the time domain sequence to a plurality of receiver devices, wherein the time domain sequence enables the plurality of receiver devices to identify a waveform followed by the time domain sequence.

14. An extensible communication method, comprising:

selecting a root index value to signal to a receiver device a major version number, wherein the major version number corresponds to a service type or mode that is to be communicated to the receiver device;

generating a constant amplitude zero auto-correlation sequence based on the selected root index value;

selecting a seed value to signal to the receiver device a minor version number within the major version number;

generating a Pseudo-Noise sequence based on the selected seed value;

modulating the constant amplitude zero auto-correlation sequence by the Pseudo-Noise sequence and generating a complex sequence; and

translating the complex sequence to a time domain sequence.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the selected root index value comprises a non-prime number.

16. The method of claim 14, wherein the time domain sequence comprises a synchronization signal.

17. The method of claim 14, wherein the modulating comprises:

generating a product of the constant amplitude zero auto-correlation sequence and the Pseudo-Noise sequence that has a reflective symmetry about a DC subcarrier.

18. The method of claim 14, further comprising:

applying a cyclic shift to the time domain sequence to obtain a shifted time domain sequence.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the cyclic shift is representative of communication information.

20. The method of claim 18, further comprising:

including in the shifted time domain sequence control signaling configured to permit reception and decoding of a waveform.

21. The method of claim 18, wherein the shifted time domain sequence is one symbol in a plurality of symbols and the method further comprising:

generating the cyclic shift based on an absolute cyclic shift of a preceding symbol and a relative cyclic shift of the one symbol.

22. The method of claim 21, further comprising:

inverting a final symbol of the plurality of symbols relative to a symbol preceding the final symbol to indicate termination of the plurality of symbols.

23. The method of claim 14, further comprising:

broadcasting the time domain sequence to a plurality of receiver devices.

24. A transmitting device, comprising:

a memory storing program instructions; and

a processor, upon executing the program instructions, configured to;

generate a constant amplitude zero auto-correlation sequence based on a root index value, wherein the root index value is selected to signal to a receiver device a major version number and the major version number corresponds to a service type or mode that is to be communicated to the receiver device;

generate a Pseudo-Noise sequence based on a seed value, wherein the seed value is selected to signal to the receiver device a minor version number within the major version number;

modulate the constant amplitude zero auto-correlation sequence by the Pseudo-Noise sequence to generate a complex sequence;

map the complex sequence to a plurality of subcarriers; and

transform the mapped complex sequence to a time domain sequence.

25. The transmitting device of claim 24, wherein to map the complex sequence, the processor, upon executing the program instructions, is further configured to:

set to zero a value of the complex sequence that maps to a DC subcarrier.

26. The transmitting device of claim 24, wherein the processor, upon executing the program instructions, is further configured to:

apply a cyclic shift to the time domain sequence to obtain a shifted time domain sequence,

wherein the shifted time domain sequence is one symbol in a plurality of symbols and the cyclic shift is generated based on an absolute cyclic shift of a preceding symbol and a relative cyclic shift of the one symbol.

27. The transmitting device of claim 26, wherein to apply the cyclic shift, the processor, upon executing the program instructions, is further configured to:

add the relative cyclic shift and the absolute cyclic shift before applying the cyclic shift.

28. The transmitting device of claim 26, wherein the processor, upon executing the program instructions, is further configured to:

invert a final symbol of the plurality of symbols relative to a symbol preceding the final symbol to indicate termination of the plurality of symbols.

29. The transmitting device of claim 26, wherein the processor, upon executing the program instructions, is further configured to transmit the shifted time domain sequence to the receiver device, and wherein the cyclic shift of the shifted time domain sequence represents communication information.

30. The transmitting device of claim 29, wherein by modulating the constant amplitude zero auto-correlation sequence by the Pseudo-Noise sequence, the processor is configured to generate the shifted time domain sequence that enables the receiver device to discover the shifted time domain sequence in a high noise condition.

31. The transmitting device of claim 24, wherein the processor, upon executing the program instructions, is further configured to broadcast the time domain sequence to a plurality of receiver devices.
