Abstract

A therapeutic fluid delivery system including, in various examples, a first reservoir configured to house a first therapeutic fluid, a second reservoir configured to house a second therapeutic fluid, and an inlet port configured to receive a fluid delivery needle is described. The inlet port is configured for fluid communication between the fluid delivery needle and the first reservoir, and the inlet port is further configured for fluid communication between the fluid delivery needle and the second reservoir.

Claims

1. A therapeutic fluid delivery system comprising:

a first reservoir configured to house a first therapeutic fluid;

a second reservoir configured to house a second therapeutic fluid;

an inlet port configured to receive a first fluid delivery needle having a first diameter and a second fluid delivery needle having a second diameter less than the first diameter, wherein the inlet port comprises a first septum and a second septum, and

wherein the inlet port is configured for fluid communication between the first fluid delivery needle and the first reservoir when the first fluid delivery needle penetrates the first septum but not the second septum, and the inlet port is further configured for fluid communication between the second fluid delivery needle and the second reservoir when the second fluid delivery needle penetrates both the first septum and the second septum; and

wherein the inlet port exhibits a reduced cross-sectional area between the first septum and the second septum such that the second needle exhibiting the second diameter less than the first diameter can access both the first septum and the second septum, while the first needle exhibiting the first diameter can access the first septum but not the second septum.

2. The therapeutic fluid delivery system of claim 1, wherein the inlet port is configured so the second fluid delivery needle penetrates the first septum before the second fluid delivery needle penetrates the second septum.

3. The therapeutic fluid delivery system of claim 1, wherein the inlet port defines a fluid intake aperture interposed between the first septum and the second septum.

4. The therapeutic fluid delivery system of claim 1, further comprising the first fluid delivery needle and the second fluid delivery needle.

5. The therapeutic fluid delivery system of claim 1, wherein at least one of the first reservoir or the second reservoir is defined by a bellows.

6. The therapeutic fluid delivery system of claim 5, wherein the bellows comprises a convolution constructed of an elastomer.

7. The therapeutic fluid delivery system of claim 1, further comprising a propellant reservoir.

8. The therapeutic fluid delivery system of claim 1, further comprising one or more sensors configured to detect when the second fluid delivery needle penetrates the first septum but not the second septum, and further detect when the second fluid delivery needle penetrates both the first septum and the second septum;

wherein, to detect when the second fluid delivery needle penetrates the first septum but not the second septum, and further detect when the second fluid delivery needle penetrates both the first septum and the second septum, the one or more sensors are configured to detect a characteristic that varies when the second fluid delivery needle penetrates the first septum but not the second septum, and further varies when the second fluid delivery needle penetrates both the first septum and the second septum, the system further comprising;

a processor configured to determine that the second fluid delivery needle has penetrated the first septum but not the second septum based on the detected characteristic.

9. The therapeutic fluid delivery system of claim 8, wherein the processor is configured to determine that the second fluid delivery needle has penetrated both the first septum and the second septum based on the detected characteristic.

10. The therapeutic fluid delivery system of claim 8, wherein the characteristic is selected from the group consisting of pressure, current, voltage, and resistance.

The therapeutic fluid delivery system of claim 10, wherein the characteristic is pressure, the one or more sensors comprise a first pressure sensor and a second pressure sensor, and the processor is configured to determine that the second fluid delivery needle has penetrated the first septum but not the second septum based on the pressure detected by the first pressure sensor, and further that the second fluid delivery needle has penetrated both the first septum and the second septum based on the pressure detected by the second pressure sensor.

12. The therapeutic fluid delivery system of claim 10, wherein the characteristic is electrical resistance.

13. The therapeutic fluid delivery system of claim 12, further comprising a wire mesh proximate to at least one of the first septum or the second septum, wherein the wire mesh is electrically connected to the one or more sensors.

14. The therapeutic fluid delivery system of claim 13, wherein the wire mesh comprises a first wire mesh proximate to the first septum, and further comprising a second wire mesh proximate to the second septum.

The therapeutic fluid delivery system of claim 12, further comprising a set of two or more stacked discs proximate to at least one of the first septum or the second septum, wherein each of the discs comprises a plurality of slots, wherein the slots in the respective discs are arranged at an angle to one another to form a plurality of apertures in the set of stacked discs, and wherein the set of stacked discs is electrically connected to the one or more sensors.

16. The therapeutic fluid delivery system of claim 15, wherein the angle between the slots of the respective discs of the set of stacked discs is at least one of approximately 90 or approximately 120 degrees.

17. The therapeutic fluid delivery system of claim 15, wherein the set of stacked discs comprises a first set of stacked discs proximate to the first septum, and further comprising a second set of stacked discs proximate to the second septum.

The therapeutic fluid delivery system of claim 8, further comprising a programmer, wherein the processor is configured to cause the programmer to at least one of vibrate, issue an audible sound, display text, or display a visual graphic when at least one of the first septum but not the second septum is penetrated by the second fluid delivery needle or when both the first septum and the second septum are penetrated by the second fluid delivery needle.

19. The therapeutic fluid delivery system of claim 18, wherein the processor is configured to cause the programmer to at least one of vibrate, issue an audible sound, display text, or display a visual graphic when at least one of the first fluid delivery needle and the second fluid delivery needle is withdrawn from at least one of the first septum or the second septum.

20. The therapeutic fluid delivery system of claim 1, further comprising a valve interposed between a fluid delivery pump and the first and second reservoirs.

21. The therapeutic fluid delivery system of claim 20, wherein the valve comprises a rotary valve.

22. The therapeutic fluid delivery system of claim 20, wherein the valve comprises a first valve interposed between the first reservoir and the fluid delivery pump, and a second valve interposed between the second reservoir and the fluid delivery pump.

23. The therapeutic fluid delivery system of claim 22, wherein the first valve is configured to actuate in response to instructions from a processor, and the second valve is a passive valve.

24. The therapeutic fluid delivery system of claim 23, wherein the second valve is a check valve.

25. The therapeutic fluid delivery system of claim 24, wherein a force required to open the check valve is less than or equal to approximately 2 pounds per square inch.

26. The therapeutic fluid delivery system of claim 23, wherein the first valve includes a solenoid.

27. The therapeutic fluid delivery system of claim 1, wherein the inlet port that exhibits the reduced cross-sectional area between the first septum and the second septum comprises an insert that reduces the cross-sectional area between the first septum and the second septum.

28. The therapeutic fluid delivery system of claim 1, wherein the inlet port that exhibits the reduced cross-sectional area between the first septum and the second septum comprises a conical section that reduces the cross-sectional area between the first septum and the second septum.

29. The therapeutic fluid delivery system of claim 1, wherein the inlet port defines an aperture between the first septum and the second septum such that the inlet port permits the second needle exhibiting the second diameter less than the first diameter to access both the first septum and the second septum, and the inlet port permits the first needle exhibiting the first diameter to access the first septum but prevents the first needle exhibiting the first diameter from accessing the second septum.

30. A method comprising:

inserting a first fluid delivery needle having a first diameter into an inlet port of a fluid delivery device, wherein the inlet port is configured to receive the first fluid delivery needle;

inserting a second fluid delivery needle having a second diameter less than the second diameter into the inlet port of the fluid delivery device, wherein the inlet port is further configured to receive the second fluid delivery needle;

wherein the inlet port comprises a first septum and a second septum, the inlet port is configured for fluid communication between the first fluid delivery needle and a first reservoir when the first fluid delivery needle penetrates the first septum but not the second septum, and the first reservoir is configured to house a first therapeutic fluid; and

wherein the inlet port is further configured for fluid communication between the second fluid delivery needle and a second reservoir when the second fluid delivery needle penetrates both the first septum and the second septum, wherein the second reservoir is configured to house a second therapeutic fluid; and

wherein the inlet port exhibits a reduced cross-sectional area between the first septum and the second septum such that the second needle exhibiting the second diameter less than the first diameter can access both the first septum and the second septum, while the first needle exhibiting the first diameter can access the first septum but not the second septum.

31. The method of claim 30, further comprising detecting, by one or more sensors, when the second fluid delivery needle penetrates the first septum but not the second septum and further when the second fluid needle penetrates both the first septum and the second septum;

wherein detecting when the second fluid delivery needle penetrates the first septum but not the second septum and further when the second fluid needle penetrates both the first septum and second septum comprises;

detecting a characteristic that varies when the second fluid delivery needle penetrates the first septum but not the second septum or both the first septum and the second septum; and

determining, by a processor, that the second fluid delivery needle has penetrated the first septum but not the second septum based on the detected characteristic.

32. The method of claim 31, wherein determining that the second fluid delivery needle has penetrated the first septum but not the second septum or both the first septum and the second septum comprises determining that the second fluid delivery needle has penetrated both the first septum and the second septum based on the detected characteristic.

33. The method of claim 31, wherein the characteristic is selected from the group consisting of pressure, current, voltage, and resistance.

34. The method of claim 31, further comprising generating a needle penetration indication when the first septum but not the second septum is penetrated by the second fluid delivery needle or when both the first septum and the second septum are penetrated by the second fluid delivery needle, wherein generating the needle penetration indication comprises at least one of vibrating, issuing an audible sound, displaying text, or displaying a visual graphic.

35. The method of claim 31, further comprising generating a needle withdrawal indication when at least one of the first fluid delivery needle and the second fluid delivery needle is withdrawn from at least one of the first septum or the second septum, wherein generating the needle withdrawal indication comprises at least one of vibrating, issuing an audible sound, displaying text, or displaying a visual graphic.

36. A method comprising:

inserting a first fluid delivery needle having a first diameter into an inlet port of a fluid delivery device to a first depth sufficient to penetrate a first septum of the inlet port but not a second septum of the inlet port to selectively access a first reservoir;

inserting a second fluid delivery needle having a second diameter less than the second diameter into the inlet port of the fluid delivery device to a second depth greater than the first depth to penetrate both the first septum and the second septum to selectively access a second reservoir different from the first reservoir;

delivering fluid from the first fluid delivery needle to the first reservoir when the first fluid delivery needle penetrates the first septum but not the second septum; and

delivering fluid from the second fluid delivery needle to the second reservoir when the second fluid delivery needle penetrates both the first septum and the second septum;

wherein the inlet port exhibits a reduced cross-sectional area between the first septum and the second septum such that the second needle exhibiting the second diameter less than the first diameter can access both the first septum and the second septum, while the first needle exhibiting the first diameter can access the first septum but not the second septum.

37. The method of claim 36, further comprising:

detecting, by one or more sensors, a characteristic that varies when the second fluid delivery needle penetrates the first septum but not the second septum or both the first septum and the second septum.

38. A fluid delivery system comprising:

first means for housing a first therapeutic fluid;

second means for housing a second therapeutic fluid;

means for receiving a first fluid delivery needle having a first diameter and a second fluid delivery needle having a second diameter less than the first diameter, wherein the means for receiving the first fluid delivery needle and the second fluid delivery needle comprises a first septum and a second septum, and

wherein the first means for housing the first therapeutic fluid is in fluid communication with the first fluid delivery needle when the first fluid delivery needle penetrates the first septum but not the second septum, and wherein the second means for housing the second therapeutic fluid is in fluid communication with the second fluid delivery needle when the second fluid delivery needle penetrates both the first septum and the second septum; and

wherein the means for receiving the first fluid delivery needle and the second delivery needle exhibits a reduced cross-sectional area between the first means for housing the first therapeutic fluid and the second means for housing the second therapeutic fluid such that the second needle exhibiting the second diameter less than the first diameter can access both the first means for housing the first therapeutic fluid and the second means for housing the second therapeutic fluid, while the first needle exhibiting the first diameter can access the first means for housing the first therapeutic fluid but not the second means for housing the second therapeutic fluid.

39. The fluid delivery system of claim 38, further comprising means for detecting when the second fluid delivery needle penetrates the first septum but not the second septum, and further when the second fluid delivery needle penetrates both the first septum and the second septum;

wherein the means for detecting detects a characteristic that varies when the second fluid delivery needle penetrates the first septum but not the second septum, and further when the second fluid delivery needle penetrates both the first septum and the second septum, wherein the characteristic is selected from the group consisting of pressure, current, voltage, and resistance, and wherein the fluid delivery system further comprises means for determining that the second fluid delivery needle has penetrated the first septum but not the second septum based on the detected characteristic and further that the second fluid delivery needle has penetrated both the first septum and the second septum based on the detected characteristic.
