Abstract

An access port for subcutaneous implantation is disclosed. Such an access port may comprise a body for capturing a septum for repeatedly inserting a needle therethrough into a cavity defined within the body. Further, the access port may include at least one feature structured and configured for identification of the access port subsequent to subcutaneous implantation. Methods of identifying a subcutaneously implanted access port are also disclosed. For example, a subcutaneously implanted access port may be provided and at least one feature of the subcutaneously implanted access port may be perceived. Further, the subcutaneously implanted access port may be identified in response to perceiving the at least one feature. In one embodiment, an identification feature is included on an insert that is incorporated into the access port so as to be visible after implantation via x-ray imaging technology.

Claims

1. A power injectable access port, comprising:

a port base including a first fluid cavity;

a first radiopaque identification feature comprising a silk screen deposit having a thickness protruding from an outer surface of the port base such that it is perceivable by sight and touch prior to implantation of the power injectable access port, the first radiopaque identification feature observable via imaging technology subsequent to subcutaneous implantation of the power injectable access port, the first radiopaque identification feature indicating that the power injectable access port is suitable for power injection;

a port cap; and

a first septum captured between the port cap and the port base.

2. The power injectable access port according to claim 1, further comprising a second fluid cavity and a second septum, wherein the first fluid cavity is covered by the first septum, and the second fluid cavity is covered by the second septum.

3. The power injectable access port according to claim 2, further comprising a second radiopaque identification feature comprising a silk screen deposit having a thickness protruding from the outer surface of the port base.

4. The power injectable access port according to claim 3, wherein the first radiopaque identification feature is positioned under the first fluid cavity, and wherein the second radiopaque identification feature is deposited on the outer surface of the port base under the second fluid cavity.

5. The power injectable access port according to claim 4, wherein the first radiopaque identification feature includes an abbreviation for computed tomography.

6. The power injectable access port according to claim 5, wherein the second radiopaque identification feature is selected from the group consisting of a pattern, a symbol, an indicia, one or more alphanumeric characters, and combinations thereof.

7. The power injectable access port according to claim 6, wherein the abbreviation for computed tomography includes the letters “

C” and

T”

.

8. The power injectable access port according to claim 7, wherein the second radiopaque identification feature is distinguishable from the first radiopaque identification feature.

9. The power injectable access port according to claim 3, wherein the second radiopaque identification feature is distinguishable from the first radiopaque identification feature.

10. The power injectable access port according to claim 1, wherein the first radiopaque identification feature is positioned under the first fluid cavity.

11. The power injectable access port according to claim 10, wherein the first radiopaque identification feature includes an abbreviation for computed tomography.

12. The power injectable access port according to claim 11, wherein the abbreviation for computed tomography includes the letters “

C” and

T”

13. The power injectable access port according to claim 1, wherein the imaging technology includes x-ray imaging technology.

14. The power injectable access port according to claim 1, wherein the first radiopaque identification feature includes an abbreviation for computed tomography.

15. The power injectable access port according to claim 14, wherein the abbreviation for computed tomography includes the letters “

C” and

“

T”

.

16. The power injectable access port according to claim 1, wherein the first radiopaque identification feature comprises a first material, and wherein the port base comprises a second material different from the first material.

17. The power injectable access port according to claim 16, wherein the port base comprises a bio-compatible plastic material.

18. The power injectable access port according to claim 17, wherein the first radiopaque identification feature comprises a radiopaque material and a silicone material.

19. The power injectable access port according to claim 18, wherein the radiopaque material is selected from the group consisting of tungsten, barium, titanium, and combinations thereof.

20. The power injectable access port according to claim 1, wherein the first radiopaque identification feature comprises a radiopaque material and a silicone material.
