1. A method comprising:

  • applying, at a first communication terminal, a time delay between a first polarization portion of an optical signal and a second polarization portion of the optical signal to delay the second polarization in time relative to the first polarization;

    combining, at the first communication terminal, the first polarization portion carrying a first data packet and the second polarization portion carrying a replica of the first data packet in the optical signal, the first polarization portion having a different polarization than the second polarization portion; and

    ,transmitting, using transmitter optics at the first communication terminal, the optical signal to a second communication terminal using the time delay between transmitting the first data packet and transmitting the replica of the first data packet,wherein applying the time delay includes determining the time delay between the second polarization portion and the first polarization portion based on environmental conditions at the first communication terminal.
