1. A method of calibrating a wearable electronic device, the method comprising:

  • receiving location data from a location data unit having a GPS sensor during the activity;

    providing, concurrently with the location data, user stride data associated with the user during the activity from an inertial motion unit (IMU) of the wearable electronic device;

    computing a speed of the user as a function of the location data from the location data unit as a function of time;

    populating a table of the speed of the user as a function of the user stride data;

    calibrating the inertial motion unit (IMU) of the wearable electronic device by associating a speed determined using the location data from the location data unit with a measured stride from data from the IMU and writing the association in the table, to provide speed data in the absence of location data;

    determining a speed of the user in the absence of data from the location data unit using the inertial motion unit (IMU) by correlating a measured user stride data from the IMU with a stored speed corresponding to the user stride data in the table; and

    providing an audio or visual indication of a user'"'"'s current speed in relation to a target speed for an activity to a user wearing the wearable electronic device with a speaker, display or haptic device mounted on the wearable electronic device.
