Abstract

An example wireless power transmitter includes: a plurality of radio frequency (RF) antennas configured to transmit RF power waves that converge to form controlled constructive interference; and a micro-controller configured to: receive from a user device a coded signature signal, the user device being coupled to a receiver. The micro-controller is also configured to: authenticate the receiver as authorized to receive wireless power from the wireless power transmitter according to the coded signature signal, and in accordance with determining that the receiver is authorized to receive wireless power from the wireless power transmitter, obtain from the receiver a set of user-defined restrictions used to determine when wireless power may be transmitted by the wireless power transmitter to the receiver. The micro-controller is additionally configured to: cause the plurality of RF antennas to transmit the RF power waves when the set of user-defined restrictions indicate that wireless power may be transmitted.

Claims

1. A wireless power transmitter comprising:

a plurality of radio frequency (RF) antennas configured to transmit two or more RF power waves such that the two or more RF power waves converge to form controlled constructive interference, in accordance with one or more RF power wave characteristics;

a micro-controller configured to;

receive from a user device a coded signature signal, wherein the user device is coupled with a receiver,

authenticate the receiver as authorized to receive wireless power from the wireless power transmitter according to the coded signature signal, and

in accordance with determining that the receiver is authorized to receive wireless power from the wireless power transmitter, obtain from the receiver a set of user-defined restrictions used to determine when wireless power may be transmitted by the wireless power transmitter to the receiver;

cause the plurality of RF antennas to transmit the two or more RF power waves with the one or more RF power wave characteristics when the set of user-defined restrictions indicate that wireless power may be transmitted, wherein energy from the two or more RF power waves is used by the receiver to provide power to the user device; and

a communication component configured to receive from the receiver the coded signature signal identifying the receiver.

2. The wireless power transmitter of claim 1, wherein the communications component is configured to operate using at least one of Bluetooth, infrared, Wi-Fi, and FM radio signals.

3. The wireless power transmitter of claim 1, wherein the coded signature signal is encoded using at least one of:

delay encoding, orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing, and code division multiplexing.

4. The wireless power transmitter of claim 1, wherein the communications component is further configured to receive from the receiver a name of a manufacturer of the receiver.

5. The wireless power transmitter of claim 1, wherein the receiver includes at least one of:

a cellular phone, an iPod, an iPad, an iPhone, a tablet, and an Android device.

6. The wireless power transmitter of claim 1, wherein the micro-controller is selected from a group comprising:

an ASIC and a microprocessor.

7. The wireless power transmitter of claim 1, wherein the set of user-defined restrictions includes at least one of:

priority status of the receiver, minimum battery level of the receiver before the wireless power transmitter can deliver power to the receiver, and an indication that the wireless power transmitter should not deliver power when the receiver is being used.

8. The wireless power transmitter of claim 1, wherein the wireless power transmitter is configured to be coupled to a server storing usage statistics associated with the receiver, wherein the usage statistics includes at least one of:

frequency of request for power, time stamps of the request for power, time required for charging the receiver, priority status of the receiver, and amount of power delivered to the receiver.

9. A wireless power transmitter comprising:

a plurality of radio frequency (RF) antennas configured to transmit two or more RF power waves such that the two or more RF power waves converge to form controlled constructive interference, in accordance with one or more RF power wave characteristics;

a micro-controller configured to;

authenticate a receiver as authorized to receive wireless power from the wireless power transmitter according to a coded signature signal,

in accordance with determining that the receiver is authorized to receive wireless power from the wireless power transmitter, obtain from a server a set of user-defined restrictions for when wireless power may be transmitted by the wireless power transmitter to the receiver,

wherein the server is communicatively coupled to the wireless power transmitter, and the user-defined restrictions are stored in a user profile on the server, and

cause the plurality of RF antennas to transmit the two or more RF power waves with the one or more RF power wave characteristics when the set of user-defined restrictions indicates that wireless power may be transmitted, wherein energy from the two or more RF power waves is used by the receiver to provide power to the user device; and

a communication component configured to receive from the receiver the coded signature signal identifying the receiver.

10. The wireless power transmitter of claim 9, wherein the communications component is configured to operate using at least one of Bluetooth, infrared, Wi-Fi, and FM radio signals.

11. The wireless power transmitter of claim 9, wherein the coded signature signal is encoded using at least one of:

delay encoding, orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing, and code division multiplexing.

12. The wireless power transmitter of claim 9, wherein the communications component is further configured to receive from the receiver a name of a manufacturer of the receiver.

13. The wireless power transmitter of claim 9, wherein the receiver includes at least one of:

a cellular phone, an iPod, an iPad, an iPhone, a tablet, and an Android device.

14. The wireless power transmitter of claim 9, wherein the micro-controller is selected from a group comprising:

an ASIC, and a microprocessor.

15. The wireless power transmitter of claim 9, wherein the set of user-defined restrictions includes at least one of:

priority status of the receiver, minimum battery level of the receiver before the wireless power transmitter can deliver power to the receiver, and an indication that the wireless power transmitter should not deliver power when the receiver is being used.

16. The wireless power transmitter of claim 9, wherein the user profile includes usage statistics associated with the receiver, wherein the usage statistics include at least one of:

frequency of request for power, time stamps of the request for power, time required for charging the receiver, priority status of the receiver, and amount of power delivered to the receiver.
