Abstract

Systems, devices, and methods are described for providing orthopedic implants that reduces the negative effects of stress shielding on surrounding bone structure. The orthopedic implants are comprised of two portions, a shell portion that forms an articulation interfaces and an intermediate portion that forms a bone interface. The shell portion is designed to reduce absorption of articulation forces and evenly distribute incident forces to the intermediate portion. The intermediate portion is designed to form a strong interface with native bone and transmit forces from the shell into the bone.

Claims

1. An orthopedic implant comprising:

a shell region having an outer articulation surface; and

an intermediate region having a bone interface, said intermediate region having different mechanical properties than the shell region;

wherein a first cross-sectional area of an anterior portion of the shell region taken perpendicular to the outer articulation surface at the anterior portion is substantially equal to the sum of (i) a second cross-sectional area of a medial condyle portion of the shell region taken perpendicular to the outer articulation surface at the medial condyle portion and (ii) a third cross-sectional area of a lateral condyle portion of the shell region taken perpendicular to the outer articulation surface at the lateral condyle portion.

2. The orthopedic implant of claim 1, wherein the intermediate region exhibits a different modulus of elasticity than the shell region.

3. The orthopedic implant of claim 1, the intermediate region has a different density than the shell region.

4. The orthopedic implant of claim 1, wherein the intermediate region has a different porosity than the shell region.

5. The orthopedic implant of claim 1, wherein the intermediate region is comprised of a different material than the shell region.

6. The orthopedic implant of claim 1, wherein the intermediate region is movable relative to the shell region.

7. The orthopedic implant of claim 1, wherein the bone interface comprises a porous bone ingrowth surface.

8. The orthopedic implant of claim 1, wherein the bone interface has contours that are different than an inner contour of the shell.

9. The orthopedic implant of claim 1, wherein the bone interface comprises a plurality of planar faces and is shaped to accommodate a standard resected bone geometry having a plurality of planar bone resections corresponding with the plurality of planar faces.

10. The orthopedic implant of claim 9, wherein an interior surface of the shell region has a substantially smooth contour,

wherein the intermediate region has a shell interface opposite the bone interface that includes a plurality of channels defined therein and is shaped to match the substantially smooth contour of the interior surface of the shell region at regions outside the plurality of channels, and

wherein the plurality of channels absorb relative movements between the shell region and the intermediate region.

11. The orthopedic implant of claim 10, wherein the plurality of planar faces of the bone interface meet to form corners, and

wherein the plurality of channels are defined in the bone interface nearby the corners of the bone interface.

12. The orthopedic implant of claim 1, wherein an interior surface of the shell region has a substantially smooth contour, and the intermediate region has a shell interface that matches the contour of the interior surface.

13. The orthopedic implant of claim 1, wherein the shell region further comprises strengthening ribs.

14. The orthopedic implant of claim 13, wherein the ribs are disposed at an anterior portion of the shell region.

15. The orthopedic implant of claim 13, wherein the shell region includes condylar portions, and

wherein the ribs are disposed on the condylar portions of the shell region.

16. The orthopedic implant of claim 13, wherein the shell region includes condylar portions, and

wherein the ribs are disposed at a junction between the condylar portions of the shell region.

17. The orthopedic implant of claim 13, wherein the ribs are disposed in an internal portion of the shell region.

18. The orthopedic implant of claim 13, wherein a first strengthening rib is disposed at a junction between a medial condylar region and a lateral condylar region of the shell region, and

wherein the first strengthening rib includes a first portion, a second portion, and a curved portion connecting the first portion and the second portion.

19. The orthopedic implant of claim 1, wherein the first cross-sectional area is substantially equal to the second cross-sectional area.

20. The orthopedic implant of claim 1, wherein the thickness of the shell region is varied to result in a substantially uniform cross-sectional area of the shell region.

21. The orthopedic implant of claim 1, wherein the first and second cross-sectional areas are defined at a first cross-section and a second cross-section, respectively;

wherein the first cross-section has a first thickness dimension and a first width dimension;

wherein the second cross-section has a second thickness dimension and a second width dimension; and

wherein the first thickness dimension is greater than the second thickness dimension, the first width dimension is less than the second width dimension, and the first cross-sectional area is substantially equal to the second cross-sectional area.

22. The orthopedic implant of claim 21, wherein the shell portion has an inferior potion;

and

wherein the second cross-section is taken perpendicular to the outer articulation surface at the inferior portion.

23. An orthopedic implant comprising:

a shell region having an outer articulation surface; and

an intermediate region having a bone interface, said intermediate region having different mechanical properties than the shell region;

wherein the shell region further comprises strengthening ribs, wherein a first strengthening rib is disposed at a junction between a medial condylar region and a lateral condylar region of the shell region, wherein the first strengthening rib includes a first portion, a second portion, and a curved portion connecting the first portion and the second portion, and wherein the first portion extends in a medial-lateral direction at the junction, and the second portion extends inferiorly-superiorly at one of the medial and lateral condylar regions.

24. The orthopedic implant of claim 23, wherein the shell region has a plurality of cross-sections, wherein each of the plurality of cross-sections is taken perpendicular to the outer articulation surface;

wherein each of the plurality of cross-sections defines;

a corresponding and respective cross-sectional profile of the shell region; and

a corresponding and respective cross-sectional area of the shell region;

wherein the cross-sectional profiles of the shell region are varied amongst the plurality of cross-sections; and

wherein the cross-sectional areas of the shell region are substantially uniform amongst the plurality of cross-sections.

25. The orthopedic implant of claim 24, wherein the thickness of the shell region is varied, wherein the width of the shell region is varied, and wherein the thickness and the width are varied inversely to one another to result in substantial uniformity amongst the cross-sectional areas.
