Abstract

An American style football including an inflatable prolate spheroidal shaped bladder, a lining positioned over the bladder, a cover assembly, a lacing, and an electronic circuit positioned between the lining and the cover assembly and generally aligned with the lacing. The cover assembly includes at least first, second, third and fourth cover panels collectively positioned over the bladder and the lining. The lacing is coupled to the first and fourth cover panels. The electronic circuit includes at least one sensor and the electronic circuit is configured to produce a signal to enable at least one characteristic of the football to be monitored during use.

Claims

1. An American-style football having opposing first and second ends, the football comprising:

an inflatable prolate spheroidal shaped bladder including a valve assembly;

a lining positioned over the bladder;

a cover assembly including at least first, second, third and fourth cover panels joined along longitudinally extending seams and collectively positioned over the bladder and the lining, one of the longitudinally extending seams joining the first and fourth cover panels and being joined together along a longitudinally extending seam including a centrally positioned longitudinally extending slot for receiving the bladder, the second and third panels defining a back side of the football, the first cover panel including a valve aperture, each of the first, second, third and fourth cover panels contacting the lining at locations spaced apart from the seams;

a lacing coupled to the first and fourth cover panels generally at the longitudinally extending slot; and

an electronic circuit positioned between the lining and the cover assembly and generally aligned with the lacing and the longitudinally extending slot and placed directly below the longitudinally extending slot, the electronic circuit being positioned away from the second and third panels and the first and second ends of the football, the electronic circuit including at least one sensor and the electronic circuit being configured to produce a signal to enable at least one characteristic of the football to be monitored during use.

2. The football of claim 1, wherein the at least one characteristic of the football is selected from the group consisting of the football'"'"'s location, movement, speed, acceleration, deceleration, rotation and temperature, and combinations thereof.

3. The football of claim 1, wherein the at least one characteristic of the football includes internal air pressure of the football.

4. The football of claim 1, wherein the lining includes a fabric layer formed of at least one layer of woven fabric and at least one layer of a polymeric material cured together.

5. The football of claim 1, wherein the lining is formed of at least one material selected from the group consisting of a woven fabric, an unwoven fabric, a rubber, a latex, ethyl vinyl acetate, polyvinylchloride, other polymeric materials, and combinations thereof.

6. The football of claim 1, wherein a recess is formed within the lining for receiving at least a portion of the electronic circuit.

7. The football of claim 1, wherein the at least one sensor is selected from the group selected from a pressure sensor, a piezoelectric sensor, a motion sensor, a temperature sensor, and combinations thereof.

8. The football of claim 1, wherein the electronic circuit includes a rechargeable battery.

9. The football of claim 1, wherein the electronic circuit has a weight of less than one ounce.

10. The football of claim 1, wherein the electronic circuit includes at least one sensor operably coupled to a processor and a memory.

11. The football of claim 1, wherein the electronic circuit is a thin, flexible radio frequency identification tag.

12. The football of claim 11, wherein the RFID tag is configured as at least one patch.

13. The football of claim 11, wherein the RFID tag is an active tag, and wherein the RFID tag includes a battery.

14. The football of claim 11, wherein the RFID tag is a passive tag, and wherein the signal produced by the RFID tag is a voltage change occurring when the football is moved through or about a RFID sensing area.

15. The football of claim 11, wherein the RFID tag is a passive tag, and wherein the signal produced by the RFID tag is a change in a magnetic field of a RFID sensing area occurring when the football is moved through or about the RFID sensing area.

16. The football of claim 1, wherein the electronic circuit includes a sleep mode that deactivates the circuit if the football is at rest beyond a predetermined amount of time.

17. The football of claim 16, wherein the predetermined amount of time within the range of 5 minutes to 120 minutes.

18. The football of claim 1, wherein the lining includes an outer surface, wherein each of the cover panels includes an edge region and a central region between the edge region, and wherein the outer surface of the lining directly contacts the central region of the cover panels.

19. The football of claim 18, wherein the cover panels directly contact and engage substantially the entire outer surface of the lining.
