Abstract

This invention in certain example instances relates generally to coin-operated video entertainment systems. More particularly, certain exemplary aspects of the invention provide methods and/or systems for controlling access to a portable coin-operated interactive entertainment device that may be used to play video games and access other forms of entertainment as well as providing features via such portable coin-operated interactive entertainment devices.

Claims

1. An interactive entertainment device provided in an out-of-home location, comprising:

a display;

a camera;

a non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing instances of media available for playback via the interactive entertainment device;

a fee collection mechanism configured to receive payment in exchange for credits usable on the interactive entertainment device to play instances of media;

a network interface; and

at least one processor configured to;

cause a user interface to be displayed on the display;

in response to inputs to the user interface, enable users to select instances of media for playback via the interactive entertainment device in exchange for credits, and/or to enable users to use the camera to capture images and/or videos, and

cause the interactive entertainment device to;

obtain images and/or videos from the camera, and display the obtained images and/or videos from the camera on the display of the interactive entertainment device substantially in real time,

wherein an additional hardware component is in wired and/or wireless connection with the interactive entertainment device, and

wherein the additional hardware component is a musical instrument.

2. The interactive entertainment device of claim 1, the processor is further configured to associate a picture that has been taken with a registered user of the interactive entertainment device such that the associated picture is used as an avatar for the interactive entertainment device.

3. The interactive entertainment device of claim 1, wherein the processor is further configured to cause the interactive entertainment device to transfer the obtained images and/or videos to an external device via the network interface.

4. The interactive entertainment device of claim 3, wherein the obtained images and/or videos are transferred to the external device via emails or messages.

5. The interactive entertainment device of claim 1, wherein the processor is further configured to respond to inputs to the user interface to enable users to create images and/or videos and upload the created images and/or videos to a server for sharing.

6. The interactive entertainment device of claim 1, wherein the processor is further configured to respond to inputs to the user interface to enable users to share images and/or videos through an online interface.

7. The interactive entertainment device of claim 1, wherein the processor may be further configured to cause the interactive entertainment device to communicate with a server in an audiovisual distribution network to obtain at least one instance of media.

8. The interactive entertainment device of claim 1, further comprising plural lighting elements, the plural lighting elements being configured to flash colors in a predetermined or random pattern, wherein the plural lighting elements include LED lights.

9. An interactive entertainment device provided in an out-of-home location, comprising:

a display;

a camera;

a non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing instances of media available for playback via the interactive entertainment device;

a fee collection mechanism configured to receive payment in exchange for credits usable on the interactive entertainment device to play instances of media;

a network interface; and

at least one processor configured to;

cause a user interface to be displayed on the display;

in response to inputs to the user interface, enable users to select instances of media for playback via the interactive entertainment device in exchange for credits, and/or to enable users to use the camera to capture images and/or videos, and

cause the interactive entertainment device to;

obtain images and/or videos from the camera, and display the obtained images and/or videos from the camera on the display of the interactive entertainment device substantially in real time,

wherein an additional hardware component is in wired and/or wireless connection with the interactive entertainment device,

wherein the additional hardware component is an external microphone, and

wherein the microphone is configured to capture an audio, the audio being combined with a video from the camera and the combined audio and video being transferred to an external device or server.

10. The interactive entertainment device of claim 9, wherein the combined audio and video is transferred to the external device or server with a delay.

11. A method of operating an interactive entertainment device provided in an out-of-home location, the method comprising:

receiving payment in exchange for credits usable on the interactive entertainment device to play instances of media;

playing back, via the interactive entertainment device, instances of media from a queue of selected instances of media;

receiving user inputs via a user interface;

in response to a user input, adding a user-selected instance of media to the queue in exchange for a predetermined number of credits;

in response to a user input, causing a camera provided to the interactive entertainment device to take a picture and/or video;

in response to a user input, obtaining an image and/or video from the camera, and displaying the obtained image and/or video on a display of the interactive entertainment device substantially in real time; and

wired and/or wireless connecting with an additional hardware component,

wherein the additional hardware component is a musical instrument.

12. The method of claim 11, further comprising associating a picture that has been taken with a registered user of the interactive entertainment device such that the associated picture is used as an avatar for the interactive entertainment device.

13. The method of claim 11, further comprising transferring the obtained image and/or video to an external device via a network interface of the interactive entertainment device.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the obtained images and/or videos are transferred to the external device via emails or messages.

15. The method of claim 11, further comprising, in response to a user input, uploading the obtained image and/or video to a server for sharing.

16. The method of claim 11, further comprising, in response to a user input, enabling a user to share an image and/or video through an online interface.

17. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium tangibly storing instructions that, when performed using a processor of an interactive entertainment device provided in an out-of-home pay-for-play location, control the digital jukebox device to at least:

receive payment in exchange for credits usable on the interactive entertainment device to play instances of media;

play back, via the interactive entertainment device, instances of media from a queue of selected instances of media;

receive user inputs via a user interface;

in response to a user input, add a user-selected instance of media to the queue in exchange for a predetermined number of credits;

in response to a user input, cause a camera provided to the interactive entertainment device to take a picture and/or video;

in response to a user input, obtain an image and/or video from the camera, display the obtained image and/or video on a display of the interactive entertainment device substantially in real time; and

wired and/or wireless connect with an additional hardware component,

wherein the additional hardware component is a musical instrument.

18. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 17, further comprising instructions that control the interactive entertainment device to at least:

associate a picture that has been taken with a registered user of the interactive entertainment device such that the associated picture is used as an avatar for the interactive entertainment device.

19. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 17, further comprising instructions that control the interactive entertainment device to at least:

transfer the obtained image and/or video to an external device via a network interface of the interactive entertainment device.

20. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 17, wherein the obtained images and/or videos are transferred to the external device via emails or messages.

21. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 17, further comprising instructions that control the interactive entertainment device to at least:

in response to a user input, upload the obtained image and/or video to a server for sharing.

22. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 17, further comprising instructions that control the interactive entertainment device to at least:

in response to a user input, enable a user to share an image and/or video through an online interface.
