Abstract

A touch screen control system communicates with a host processing system (HPS). The touch screen control system includes a memory and control circuitry. The control circuitry operates a touch screen according to rules stored in the memory by: during a first time period and in response to detecting a first type of user input with a touch sensor of the touch screen, updating a display screen of the touch screen autonomously without requiring intervention from the HPS following the detection of the first type of user input; during the first time period and in response to detecting a second type of user input with the touch sensor, updating the display screen according to directions provided by the HPS; and during a second time period and in response to detecting the first type of user input with the touch sensor, updating the display screen according to directions provided by the HPS.

Claims

1. A touch screen control system, the touch screen control system comprising:

an integrated circuit memory configured to store security data in a protected area of the integrated circuit memory; and

an integrated circuit coupled to the integrated circuit memory and configured to couple with a host processing system, wherein the integrated circuit is physically separate from the host processing system, the integrated circuit further configured to;

detect a user input in a sensing region using a touch sensor in response to a security interface being displayed on a display screen;

compare, using the plurality of rules, the user input from the touch sensor to the stored security data in the integrated circuit memory, wherein the user input from the touch sensor and the stored security data cannot be read by the host processing system, based on the stored security data being stored in the protected area; and

based on comparing the user input to the stored security data;

notify the host processing system whether the user input is authenticated;

autonomously generate a blended image by blending image data held in the integrated circuit memory, wherein said blended image is generated without requiring intervention from the host processing system; and

autonomously update the display screen with the blended image without requiring intervention from the host processing system,

wherein the autonomous updating of the display screen is performed at an autonomous display image update rate, and

wherein the autonomous display image update rate is different from an image data update rate at which the host processing system would update the image data.

2. The touch screen control system of claim 1, wherein notifying the host processing system that the authentication has occurred comprises:

transmitting an encryption key from the memory to the host processing system.

3. The touch screen control system of claim 1, wherein the stored security data include at least one of passwords and encryptions keys.

4. The touch screen control system of claim 1, wherein the security interface comprises a keypad allowing input of a password.

5. The touch screen control system of claim 1, wherein the touch screen control system comprises:

display control circuitry for updating the display screen; and

touch sensor control circuitry for operating the touch sensor and configured for communications with the display control circuitry.

6. The touch screen control system of claim 5, wherein the display control circuitry and the touch sensor control circuitry share processing circuitry.

7. The touch screen control system of claim 1, wherein notifying the host processing system comprises:

providing an indication to the host processing system to enter one of an unlocked and full power state.

8. The touch screen control system of claim 1, wherein the blended image comprises a secondary image for responding to a failed unlocking attempt, if a determination is made that the user input is not authenticated, based on the comparison of the user input and the stored security data.

9. A method of operating a touch screen control system for an electronic device, the method comprising:

storing security data in a protected area of an integrated circuit memory located in an integrated circuit, wherein the integrated circuit is physically separate from a host processing system;

detecting, by the integrated circuit, a user input in a sensing region using a touch sensor in response to a security interface being displayed on a display screen;

comparing, by the integrated circuit and using the plurality of rules, the user input from the touch sensor to the stored security data in the integrated circuit memory, wherein the user input from the touch sensor and the stored security data cannot be read by the host processing system, based on the stored security data being stored in the protected area;

based on comparing the user input to the stored security data;

notifying the host processing system whether the user input is authenticated;

autonomously generating a blended image by blending image data held in the integrated circuit memory, wherein said blended image is generated without requiring intervention from the host processing system; and

autonomously updating the display screen with the blended image without requiring intervention from the host processing system,

wherein the autonomous updating of the display screen is performed at an autonomous display image update rate, and

wherein the autonomous display image update rate is different from an image data update rate at which the host processing system would update the image data.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein notifying the host processing system that the authentication has occurred comprises:

transmitting an encryption key from the memory to the host processing system.

11. The method of claim 9, wherein the stored security data include at least one of passwords and encryptions keys.

12. The method of claim 9, wherein the security interface comprises a keypad allowing input of a password.

13. The method of claim 9, wherein the touch screen control system comprises:

display control circuitry for updating the display screen; and

touch sensor control circuitry for operating the touch sensor and configured for communications with the display control circuitry.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the display control circuitry and the touch sensor control circuitry share processing circuitry.

15. The method of claim 9, wherein notifying the host processing system comprises:

providing an indication to the host processing system to enter one of an unlocked and full power state.

16. The method of claim 9, wherein the blended image comprises a secondary image for responding to a failed unlocking attempt, if a determination is made that the user input is not authenticated, based on the comparison of the user input and the stored security data.

17. An electronic device comprising:

a touch screen comprising a touch sensor and a display screen;

a host processing system; and

a touch screen control system coupled to the host processing system and the touch screen, wherein the touch screen control system comprises an integrated circuit physically separate from the host processing system, the integrated circuit configured to;

store security data in a protected area of an integrated circuit memory located in the integrated circuit;

detect a user input in a sensing region using the touch sensor in response to a security interface being displayed on a display screen;

compare, using the plurality of rules, the user input from the touch sensor to the stored security data in the integrated circuit memory, wherein the user input from the touch sensor and the stored security data cannot be read by the host processing system, based on the stored security data being stored in the protected area;

based on comparing the stored security data to the user input;

notify the host processing system whether the user input is authenticated;

autonomously generate a blended image by blending image data held in the integrated circuit memory, wherein said blended image is generated without requiring intervention from the host processing system; and

autonomously update the display screen with the blended image without requiring intervention from the host processing system,

wherein the autonomous updating of the display screen is performed at an autonomous display image update rate, and

wherein the autonomous display image update rate is different from an image data update rate at which the host processing system would update the image data.

18. The electronic device of claim 17, wherein notifying the host processing system comprises:

providing an indication to the host processing system to enter one of an unlocked and full power state.

19. The electronic device of claim 17, wherein notifying the host processing system that the authentication has occurred comprises:

transmitting an encryption key from the memory to the host processing system.

20. The electronic device of claim 17, wherein the blended image comprises a secondary image for responding to a failed unlocking attempt, if a determination is made that the user input is not authenticated, based on the comparison of the user input and the stored security data.
