Detecting mobile devices within a vehicle based on cellular data detected within the vehicle
First Claim
1. A system, comprising:
- a monitoring device connected with a vehicle and comprising at least a primary antenna, wherein the monitoring device is configured to monitor, via the primary antenna, one or more uplink frequency bands for a cellular data signal indicative of a presence of a mobile device within the vehicle; and
an antenna component mounted between a driver space and a passenger space within the vehicle, the antenna component comprising at least a first antenna, a second antenna and a RF microwave reflective or absorptive material, wherein the RF microwave reflective or absorptive material is positioned between the first antenna and second antenna and wherein the antenna component is configured to (i) monitor, via the first antenna and the second antenna, the one or more uplink frequency bands for the cellular data signal and (ii) distinguish, based on the monitoring via the first antenna and the second antenna, whether the cellular data signal originates from the driver space or from the passenger space.

Abstract
Systems, methods, and devices for detecting the presence and location of a mobile communication device within a vehicle includes a monitoring device mounted within the vehicle, the monitoring device includes a primary antenna for detecting cellular data signals originating from within the vehicle. One or more external antenna components mounted at different locations within the vehicle further help to pinpoint the location of detected cellular data signals and correspondingly the location of the mobile device. The external antenna components further help to eliminate and distinguish cellular data signals coming from outside the vehicle and from other mobile communication devices that are not within the driver space of the vehicle.
