1. A method, comprising:
- generating, by a plurality of circuits of a waveguide system, instances of a first electromagnetic wave, wherein each circuit of the plurality of circuits generates an instance of the first electromagnetic wave; and
directing, by the waveguide system, the instances of the first electromagnetic wave to an interface of a transmission medium to induce propagation of a combined electromagnetic wave, wherein the combined electromagnetic wave propagates along the transmission medium without requiring an electrical return path, and wherein the combined electromagnetic wave has a dominant non-fundamental wave mode.

Abstract
Aspects of the subject disclosure may include, for example, a system for generating first electromagnetic waves and directing instances of the first electromagnetic waves to an interface of a transmission medium to induce propagation of second electromagnetic waves having a dominant non-fundamental wave mode. Other embodiments are disclosed.
