1. A confocal displacement sensor, comprising:

  • a light source configured to emit light;

    a first lens, the first lens being configured to focus the light emitted from the light source;

    a beam splitter, the beam splitter being configured to receive the focused light from the first lens and split the focused light into a first beam of light and a second beam of light;

    a first prism, the first prism being configured to refract light from the first beam of light;

    a reference detector, the reference detector being configured to receive the refracted first beam of light from the first prism;

    a wave plate, the wave plate being configured to receive the second beam of light from the beam splitter;

    a second lens, the second lens being configured to further focus the second beam of light from the wave plate;

    a diaphragm housing, the diaphragm housing having a first portion, a second portion, and a lumen there through, the first portion of the diaphragm housing having a first length and the second portion of the diaphragm housing having a second length, the second length being longer than the first length, the first portion of the diaphragm housing having a first diameter and the second portion of the diaphragm housing having a second diameter, the first diameter being larger than the second diameter, the diaphragm housing being sized to releasably retain the second lens inside the lumen;

    a diaphragm, the diaphragm being configured to reflect light from the further focused second beam of light, the diaphragm being disposed at the distal end of the second portion of the diaphragm housing to seal the lumen, the diaphragm housing and the diaphragm being a molded unitary piece, the diaphragm being deflectable in response to blood pressure in the range between 0 mmHg to at least 250 mmHg;

    a second prism, the second prism being configured to refract light, the beam splitter being configured to receive the reflected second beam of light from the diaphragm and then direct the second beam of light from the diaphragm to the second prism, the second prism refracting the second beam of light from the diaphragm into a third beam of light;

    a signal detector, the signal detector being configured to receive the third beam of light from the second prism and measure at least one property of light of the third beam of light;

    the light source, the first lens, the beam splitter, the wave plate, the second lens, the diaphragm housing, and the diaphragm being disposed along a first longitudinal axis;

    the first prism, the beam splitter, and the second prism being disposed along a second longitudinal axis, the second longitudinal axis being orthogonal to the first longitudinal axis; and

    the reference detector and the signal detector being disposed along a third longitudinal axis, the third longitudinal axis being parallel to the second longitudinal axis and being orthogonal to the first longitudinal axis.
