Abstract

Systems and methods for operating an engine with deactivating and non-deactivating valves are presented. In one example, mode changes between deactivating cylinders is based on an amount of time a valve is deactivated, and the longer the valve is deactivated the sooner cylinder valves may be deactivated. If the amount of time the valve is deactivated is short, the time that valves may be deactivated may be delayed.

Claims

1. An engine operating method, comprising:

adjusting a time a first cylinder poppet valve is allowed to be deactivated via a controller in response to an amount of time a second cylinder poppet valve was deactivated during a prior period of cylinder deactivation;

deactivating the first cylinder poppet valve via the controller in response to the time the first cylinder poppet valve is allowed to be deactivated; and

reducing a total actual number of active engine cylinders combusting air and fuel from a first number of active engine cylinders to a second number of active engine cylinders in response to the time the first cylinder poppet valve is allowed to be deactivated.

2. The method of claim 1, where the time the first cylinder poppet valve is allowed to be deactivated is relative to a time a cylinder poppet valve reactivation request is made.

3. The method of claim 1, where the first cylinder poppet valve and the second cylinder poppet valve are different poppet valves.

4. The method of claim 1, where the first cylinder poppet valve and the second cylinder poppet valve are a same poppet valve.

The method of claim 1, where the first number is greater than the second number, and further comprising adjusting the time the cylinder poppet valve is allowed to be deactivated based on a time it takes an engine operating with the second number of active engine cylinders to conserve an amount of fuel consumed during a transition from the first number to the second number as compared to operating the engine with the first number of active engine cylinders.

The method of claim 1, where an engine operates with an actual total first number of cylinders combusting air and fuel in response to deactivating the first cylinder poppet valve allowed to be deactivated, and further comprising adjusting a time a third cylinder poppet valve is allowed to be deactivated via the controller in response to an amount of time a fourth cylinder poppet valve was deactivated during a prior period of cylinder deactivation where an actual total second number of cylinders combusting air and fuel is less than the actual total first number of cylinders combusting air and fuel.

7. An engine operating method, comprising:

increasing a value of a variable, stored in a memory of a controller, in response to exiting a cylinder deactivation period via the controller;

decreasing the value of the variable a predetermined amount over a predetermined amount of time; and

deactivating a cylinder poppet valve via the controller in response to the variable being equal to zero and a request to deactivate the cylinder poppet valve.

The method of claim 7, further comprising increasing the value of the variable by a first amount in response to operating an engine with a first actual total number of cylinders for a first amount of time and increasing the value of the variable by a second amount in response to operating the engine with the first actual total number of cylinders for a second amount of time.

The method of claim 7, further comprising increasing the value of the variable by a first amount in response to operating an engine with a first actual total number of cylinders for a first amount of time and increasing the value of the variable by a second amount in response to operating the engine with a second actual total number of cylinders for the first amount of time.

10. The method of claim 7, further comprising decreasing an actual total number of cylinders combusting air and fuel in response to the variable being equal to zero and the request to deactivate the cylinder poppet valve.

11. The method of claim 7, where the value of the variable is increased to a first value in response to exiting a cylinder deactivation period where a first actual total number of cylinders not combusting air and fuel is a first value, and where the value of the variable is increased to a second value in response to exiting a cylinder deactivation period where a second total number of cylinders not combusting air and fuel is a second value.

12. The method of claim 11, where the second value is greater than the first value.

13. The method of claim 12, further comprising increasing the value of the variable based on an amount of time operating in the cylinder deactivation period where the first actual total number of cylinders not combusting air and fuel is the first value.

14. A vehicle system, comprising:

an engine including one or more cylinder poppet valves that may be deactivated; and

a controller including non-transitory executable instructions, which, when executed by the controller, adjust an amount of time between a request to deactivate the one or more cylinder poppet valves and a time the one or more cylinder poppet valves are deactivated in response to an amount of time the engine operates with one or more cylinders deactivated via holding closed the one or more cylinder poppet valves during an entire engine cycle.

15. The vehicle system of claim 14, further comprising additional instructions to reactivate the one or more cylinder poppet valves.

16. The vehicle system of claim 14, where the amount of time is based on a variable that is decreased a predetermined amount over a predetermined amount of time.

17. The vehicle system of claim 16, where the variable is increased based on an actual total amount of time the engine is operated with the one or more cylinder poppet valves deactivated.

18. The vehicle system of claim 14, further comprising additional instructions to count an amount of time the engine operates with the one or more cylinder poppet valves deactivated.

19. The vehicle system of claim 14, where the engine does not include any cylinder exhaust valves that may be deactivated.
