1. A pump controller for use with a pump having a motor, the pump connected to a water distribution system, the pump controller comprising:
- a first processor, the first processor programmed to perform a self-calibration procedure when the first processor is provided line power that determines a minimum non-zero flow speed of the motor, to store the minimum non-zero-flow speed in a memory of the pump controller, to use the minimum non-zero flow speed as an initial speed of the motor whenever the motor is turned on after the self-calibration procedure is complete, and to detect fault conditions in the water distribution system; and
a second processor that communicates with the first processor, the second processor programmed to receive one or more inputs from one or more sensors in the water distribution system and to coordinate serial communications with a user input device;
wherein the minimum non-zero flow speed is an operational speed of the motor at which a flow rate of a water being pumped by the pump through the water distribution system transitions from a static state where the flow rate is zero to a dynamic state where the flow rate is non-zero.

Abstract
A method and apparatus for a pump control system. One or more embodiments of the invention include a pump controller that can perform a self-calibrating procedure, can provide precise motor speed control, can provide a limp mode before shutting down the motor when system parameters are exceeded and/or fault conditions occur, can detect fault conditions, and can store fault conditions for later retrieval.

6. A pump controller for use with a pool pump driven by a variable speed motor, the pool pump in fluid communication with a water distribution system of a pool, the pump controller comprising:
-
a first processor, the first processor programmed a) to perform a self-calibration procedure when the first processor is provided line power to determine a minimum non-zero flow speed of the variable speed motor that is a minimum motor speed capable of producing positive water flow in the water distribution system of the pool at which the pump motivates water to transition from a static state to a dynamic state, b) to operate the variable speed motor at the minimum non-zero flow speed whenever the variable speed motor is turned on after the self-calibration procedure is complete, and c) to detect fault conditions in the water distribution system; and a second processor that communicates with the first processor, the second processor programmed to receive one or more inputs from one or more sensors in the water distribution system and to coordinate serial communications with a user input device. - View Dependent Claims (7, 8, 9, 10)

11. A pump controller for use with a pool pump driven by a variable speed motor, the pool pump in fluid communication with a water distribution system of a pool for circulating water, the pump controller comprising:
-
a first means for performing a self-calibration procedure when the first means is provided line power that determines a minimum non-zero flow speed of the motor by searching for a minimum motor speed at which the pump motivates the water within the water distribution system to transition from a zero flow rate to a non-zero flow rate to produce positive water flow in the water distribution system of the pool, for operating the variable speed motor at the minimum non-zero flow speed whenever the variable speed motor is turned on after the self-calibration procedure is complete, and for detecting fault conditions in the water distribution system; and a second means communicating with the first means for receiving one or more inputs from one or more sensors in the water distribution system and for coordinating serial communications with a user input device. - View Dependent Claims (12, 13, 14, 15)
