1. A method, comprising:

  • establishing, by the mobile device, a wireless communications link for receiving wireless signals from an electronic device associated with a vehicle, the electronic device selected from the group consisting of a vehicle on-board computer, an ignition system, a car stereo, a global positioning system, a key, and a key fob;

    receiving, at the mobile device via the wireless communication link with the electronic device associated with the vehicle, wireless signals indicating a first predefined triggering event regarding operation of the vehicle selected from the group consisting of insertion of key in ignition, ignition powered on, engine is running, radio powered on, transmission set in forward gear, vehicle engine start, and threshold vehicle engine RPM;

    in response to receiving the wireless signals indicating the first predefined triggering event, automatically beginning, by the mobile device and using at least one accelerometer included in the mobile device, collection of vehicle operation data;

    receiving, at the mobile device via the wireless communication link with the electronic device associated with the vehicle, wireless signals indicating a second predefined triggering event regarding operation of the vehicle selected from the group consisting of removal of key from ignition, ignition powered off, engine not running, radio powered off, transmission set in non-moving gear, vehicle engine stop, and threshold vehicle engine RPM;

    in response to receiving the wireless signals indicating the second predefined triggering event, automatically stopping, by the mobile device and using at least one accelerometer included in the mobile device, the collection of the vehicle operation data;

    collecting, by the mobile device via the wireless communication link with the electronic device associated with the vehicle or using a location tracking system included in the mobile device, geographic location information during the data collection session, wherein the collected geographic location information dynamically identifies a location of the vehicle;

    scoring, by the mobile device via execution of an application stored locally in the mobile device, a driving behavior of a driver by;

    comparing the vehicle operation data collected using the at least one accelerometer included in the mobile device with one or more predefined threshold values;

    identifying one or more notable driving events based on the comparison of the collected vehicle operation data with the one or more predefined threshold values;

    determining a geographic location of each identified notable driving event based on the collected geographic location information; and

    calculating one or more driving scores for the driver based at least on the collected vehicle operation data and the one or more identified notable driving events;

    displaying, by the mobile device, via a display device included in the mobile device, the one or more driving scores; and

    displaying, by the mobile device, via the display device included in the mobile device, a map indicating the geographic location determined for each identified notable driving event.
