Abstract

Aspects of the subject disclosure may include, a communication device with a support structure having first and second annular contacts formed on an outer surface thereof, a first radio device having a first inner surface of a first housing opening with a third contact, and a second radio device having a second inner surface of a second housing opening with a fourth contact. The support structure is positioned in and passes through the first and second housing openings thereby positioning the first and second radio devices in a stacked arrangement, and, when in the stacked arrangement, the first and third contacts are aligned and the second and fourth contact are aligned to provide a coupling between the first and second radio devices. Other embodiments are disclosed.

Claims

1. A communication device comprising:

a support structure having a cylindrical shape with an outer surface, wherein the support structure has a plurality of first contacts formed on the outer surface, wherein each of the plurality of first contacts is a separate annular conductive ring circumscribing the outer surface; and

a first radio device connected with the support structure, wherein the first radio device has a first radio housing with a first housing opening therethrough, wherein the support structure is positioned in and passes through the first housing opening, wherein the first radio device comprises first radio components associated with transmitting first wireless signals, receiving the first wireless signals, or a combination thereof, wherein the first housing opening has a first inner surface with a first coupling structure, wherein the first coupling structure comprises a plurality of second contacts, and wherein each of the plurality of second contacts corresponds to and aligns with a corresponding one of the plurality of first contacts formed on the outer surface of the support structure.

2. The communication device of claim 1, wherein the first coupling structure comprises a biasing member that physically biases the plurality of second contacts towards the plurality of first contacts formed on the outer surface of the support structure.

3. The communication device of claim 2, wherein the biasing member comprises a spring.

4. The communication device of claim 1, further comprising an antenna, wherein coupling one of the plurality of second contacts with one of the plurality of first contacts enables coupling the first radio components of the first radio device to the antenna.

5. The communication device of claim 1, further comprising an Ethernet switch, wherein coupling one of the plurality of second contacts with one of the plurality of first contacts enables coupling the first radio components of the first radio device to the Ethernet switch.

6. The communication device of claim 1, further comprising a power source, wherein coupling one of the plurality of second contacts with one of the plurality of first contacts enables coupling the first radio components of the first radio device to the power source.

7. The communication device of claim 1, wherein the support structure has a plurality of third contacts formed on the outer surface, wherein each of the plurality of third contacts is an annular contact circumscribing the outer surface, and further comprising:

a second radio device connected with the support structure, wherein the second radio device has a second radio housing with a second housing opening therethrough, wherein the support structure is positioned in and passes through the second housing opening, wherein the second radio device comprises second radio components associated with transmitting second wireless signals, receiving the second wireless signals, or a combination thereof, wherein the first and second radio devices are positioned in a stacked arrangement, wherein the second housing opening has a second inner surface with a second coupling structure, wherein the second coupling structure comprises a plurality of fourth contacts, and wherein each of the plurality of fourth contacts corresponds to and aligns with a corresponding one of the plurality of third contacts formed on the outer surface of the support structure.

The communication device of claim 7, wherein coupling one of the plurality of second contacts with one of the plurality of first contacts and coupling one of the plurality of fourth contacts with one of the plurality of third contacts enables coupling the first radio components of the first radio device to the second radio components of the second radio device.

9. The communication device of claim 8, wherein the first wireless signals and the second wireless signals utilize different communication protocols.

10. The communication device of claim 7, wherein the second radio device comprises a directional antenna, and wherein the second radio housing is rotatable with respect to the support structure to enable adjusting of a direction of the directional antenna.

11. The communication device of claim 7, wherein the second radio housing is rotatable with respect to the support structure to enable adjusting an orientation of the second radio housing independent of another orientation of the first radio housing.

The communication device of claim 1, further comprising an antenna, wherein coupling one of the plurality of second contacts with one of the plurality of first contacts enables coupling the first radio components of the first radio device to the antenna, wherein the antenna is an omni directional antenna, wherein the transmitting of the first wireless signals induces electromagnetic waves at a physical interface of a transmission medium that propagate without requiring an electrical return path, wherein the electromagnetic waves are guided by the transmission medium towards a receiver, wherein the electromagnetic waves are representative of the first wireless signals, and wherein the support structure is physically connected to a strut channel.

13. A communication device comprising:

a support structure having an elongated shape with an outer surface, wherein the support structure has a plurality of first contacts and a plurality of second contacts formed on the outer surface, wherein each of the plurality of first and second contacts is an annular contact circumscribing the outer surface;

a first radio device having a first housing opening, wherein a first inner surface of the first housing opening has a first coupling structure, wherein the first radio device comprises first radio components associated with transmitting first wireless signals, receiving the first wireless signals, or a combination thereof, wherein the first coupling structure comprises a plurality of third contacts, and wherein each of the plurality of third contacts corresponds to and aligns with a corresponding one of the plurality of first contacts formed on the outer surface of the support structure; and

a second radio device having a second housing opening, wherein a second inner surface of the second housing opening has a second coupling structure, wherein the second radio device comprises second radio components associated with transmitting second wireless signals, receiving the second wireless signals, or a combination thereof, wherein the second coupling structure comprises a plurality of fourth contacts, and wherein each of the plurality of fourth contacts corresponds to and aligns with a corresponding one of the plurality of second contacts formed on the outer surface of the support structure, wherein the support structure is positioned in and passes through the first and second housing openings thereby positioning the first and second radio devices in a stacked arrangement.

The communication device of claim 13, wherein the support structure has a cylindrical shape, and wherein the second radio housing is rotatable with respect to the support structure to enable adjusting an orientation of the second radio housing independent of another orientation of the first radio housing.

15. The communication device of claim 13, wherein the first wireless signals and the second wireless signals utilize different communication protocols.

16. The communication device of claim 13, further comprising an antenna, wherein coupling one of the plurality of third contacts with one of the plurality of first contacts enables coupling the first radio components of the first radio device to the antenna.

17. The communication device of claim 13, further comprising an Ethernet switch, wherein coupling one of the plurality of third contacts with one of the plurality of first contacts enables coupling the first radio components of the first radio device to the Ethernet switch.

18. The communication device of claim 13, further comprising a power source, wherein coupling one of the plurality of third contacts with one of the plurality of first contacts enables coupling the first radio components of the first radio device to the power source.

19. A communication device comprising:

a support structure having an elongated shape with an outer surface, wherein the support structure has first and second contacts formed on the outer surface, wherein each of the first and second contacts is an annular contact circumscribing the outer surface;

a first radio device having a first housing opening, wherein a first inner surface of the first housing opening has a first coupling structure with a third contact; and

a second radio device having a second housing opening, wherein a second inner surface of the second housing opening has a second coupling structure with a fourth contact,

wherein the support structure is positioned in and passes through the first and second housing openings thereby positioning the first and second radio devices in a stacked arrangement,

wherein, when in the stacked arrangement, the first and third contacts are aligned and the second and fourth contact are aligned to provide a coupling between the first and second radio devices.

20. The communication device of claim 19, further comprising an antenna, wherein the support structure has a fifth contact formed on the outer surface, wherein the fifth contact is an annular contact circumscribing the outer surface, wherein the first coupling structure of the first radio device has a sixth contact, wherein, when in the stacked arrangement, the fifth and sixth contacts are aligned to provide a coupling between the antenna and radio components of the first radio device.
