Abstract

A data recording and playback system and method with a memory device adapted to receive and temporarily store input signal data as data frames with time stamps, the memory device having addresses associated thereto, and a circular storage buffer having a memory mapped file with same address space as the memory device for storing the input signal data. In one embodiment, an event controller provides an event signal associated to time of an event, and an event processor is provided that copies plurality of data frames stored in the circular storage buffer that have time stamps proximate to the time of the event. Another embodiment is adapted to allow playback of stored input signal data from the circular storage buffer without interrupting simultaneous recording of new input signal data into the circular storage buffer.

Claims

1. A data recording and playback system comprising:

a data capture input device that captures digitized streaming data;

a memory device adapted to receive and store the digitized streaming data from the data capture input device as data frames with time stamps, each data frame including one time stamp and the memory device having unique virtual addresses associated thereto,

wherein the memory device is a virtually memory mapped storage buffer allocated from a computer'"'"'s virtual address space,

wherein the virtual address space is mapped to one or more physical memory devices, each with its own unrelated physical memory address spaces or file structures, and

wherein the computer'"'"'s RAM includes a virtual memory caching mechanism which moves data frames from memory mapped storage into RAM-based storage upon access of the virtual addresses of the memory mapped storage buffer enabling simultaneous read or write operations from one or more client programs upon one or more discontiguous segments of the virtual memory mapped storage buffer simultaneously across one or more discontiguous physical memory devices which appear to the client programs as one contiguous memory mapped storage buffer address space.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the digitized streaming data includes a digitized video data stream.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the memory mapped storage buffer is adapted to access and replicate at least one digitized data frame without interrupting simultaneous recording of a subsequent digitized streaming data into the storage buffer.

4. The system of claim 3, further comprising:

a memory mapped storage buffer viewer control configured to scan back in time through the storage buffer to access digitized data frames for viewing.

5. The system of claim 4, wherein the accessed digitized data frames for viewing include at least one of static, slow motion, normal speed, and scanned fast motion video data frames.

6. The system of claim 4, wherein the viewer control is connected to a computer network.

7. The system of claim 3, wherein a viewer control is configured to scan back in time through the storage buffer to access digitized data frames for viewing over one or more unique computer network connections with simultaneous independent memory mapped buffer viewing sessions.

8. The system of claim 7, further comprising:

a networked client device adapted to remotely control the viewer control.

9. The system of claim 8, wherein the networked client device is connected to a networked database storing at least one of event signals, associated digitized video data frames, and event metadata.

10. The system of claim 9, wherein the networked client device includes a display device configured to display digitized data frames stored in the memory mapped storage buffer.

11. The system of claim 7, further comprising:

a plurality of networked client devices adapted to remotely control the viewer control.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein the plurality of networked client devices is connected to a networked database to access at least one of event signals, associated digitized video data frames, and event metadata.

13. The system of claim 1, wherein the system stores recent data frames over aged data frames in the memory mapped storage buffer when a time duration of the digitized streaming data exceeds a capacity of the memory mapped storage buffer.

14. The system of claim 13, wherein the memory device is a randomly accessible memory of a computer.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein the randomly accessible memory is removable and archivable.

16. The system of claim 1 further comprising:

an event controller that captures at least one external event signal that is time-synchronized with the streaming data and associates the external event signal with the data capture input device data frame that includes a proximate time stamp concurrent with the external event signal time stamp.

17. The system of claim 16, wherein the event controller identifies a data frame with the external event signal and associates the external event with the data frame of the input signal data.

18. The system of claim 17, wherein the data frame with the external event signal indicates a time of the external event.

19. The system of claim 16, wherein the event signal includes descriptive metadata.

20. The system of claim 16, further comprising:

a database storing at least one of event signals, associated digitized video data frames, and event metadata.

21. The system of claim 20, wherein the database is a relational database.

22. The system of claim 21, wherein the relational database is a networkable relational database.

23. The system of claim 16, wherein the at least one external event signal is generated by a person through a physical input device in response to a real time external observation.

24. The system of claim 16, wherein the at least one external event signal is generated by a person in response to observations of previously recorded digitized data frames in a memory mapped storage buffer.

25. The system of claim 1, wherein the computer RAM caching is coherent across multiprocessor central processing units (CPUs).

26. The system of claim 1, wherein the computer RAM caching is coherent across multi-threaded multiprocessor central processing units (CPUs).

27. The system of claim 1, wherein the computer RAM caching is coherent across multiple networked multiprocessor multithreaded central processing units (CPUs).
