Abstract

A low-energy blade system having a quick-change attachment for a lawn maintenance tool. The low-energy blade system requires a reduced amount of energy to rotate the blade system. The blade system includes a shell, a mounting plate attached to the shell, a plurality of quick-attach mechanisms, and a separate cutting blade attachable to each of the quick-attach mechanisms. Each quick-attach mechanism allows a cutting blade to be attached to the mounting plate without the need for external tools, such as screwdriver, wrench, ratchet, or the like.

Claims

1. A low-energy blade system for a lawn maintenance tool, said blade system comprising:

a shell having an upper surface and a lower surface;

a mounting plate attached to said lower surface of said shell;

a plurality of cutting blades releasably attachable to said mounting plate; and

a plurality of quick-attach mechanisms operatively connected to said mounting plate, wherein each of said cutting blades is operatively connectable to one of said quick-attach mechanisms,

wherein each of said quick-attach mechanisms includes a biasing member attached to said mounting plate, and wherein said biasing member includes a tab extending therefrom, said tab prevents attachment of one of said plurality of cutting blades to said mounting plate if said cutting blade is not properly aligned.

2. The blade system of claim 1, said biasing member providing an axial biasing force to one of said plurality of cutting blades when said cutting blade is attached to said mounting plate.

3. The blade system of claim 1, and wherein said biasing member extends from said mounting plate in a cantilevered manner.

4. The blade system of claim 1, wherein each of said quick-attach mechanisms includes a cap integrally connected to said mounting plate, and wherein one of said plurality of cutting blades being removably attachable to said cap.

5. The blade system of claim 4, wherein said cap includes a post connected to said mounting plate and a plate attached to an end of said post, said plate being oriented substantially parallel to said mounting plate.

6. The blade system of claim 1, wherein the biasing member comprises a base, a body extending from the base, a curved portion, and a bearing portion.

7. The blade system of claim 6, wherein the biasing member is an L-shaped spring.

8. The blade system of claim 6, wherein the body of the biasing member extends from the base at an angle.

9. The blade system of claim 8, wherein the angle is formed between the base and the body to provide a spring action when the biasing member is actuated.

10. The blade system of claim 6, wherein the curved portion connects the body and the bearing portion.

11. The blade system of claim 10, wherein the bearing portion extends from the curved portion at an angle relative to the body.

12. The blade system of claim 6, wherein the bearing portion comprises a bearing surface configured to contact the cutting blades and bias the cutting blades either into engagement when properly aligned during attachment or into disengagement when not properly aligned during attachment.

13. The blade system of claim 6, wherein the cutting blades each contact the body and curved portion of the biasing member, and as the cutting blades are moved toward the mounting plate the biasing member is actuated by bending and rotating in a cantilevered manner.
